motor/esc choices
Hello all - I am just starting up racing, and looking for a new motor/esc for my Dex210. I'll be racing outdoor astro, and as I am just starting out would ideally prefer one motor for the moment.
Can anyone recommend a decent all rounder? Really confused as to what I should be looking at now! |

In the same boat.
I am in the same position nick with the same problems. Did you manage to get any recommendations from anyone?
I am tempted to just try the SkyRc leopard 60a 10.5t off eBay as looks cracking value but unsure if I would be making a mistake. Last edited by RoyG; 22-12-2015 at 08:22 PM. |

Hi,
Depends on a number of things. Mostly budget! Everybody will suggest different things as usual with these threads, but I can help with some general info. For 2WD it is normally motors in the 7.5t to 10.5t range. An 8.5t would be a good place to start. Good, usable power, but reasonably easy to drive. Then you need a speedo to handle it. Plenty around. You can quite often get 'combo' deals with motor/esc packages. This kind of thing: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SKYRC-Brus...Fmb8DoadSssuSw Not top notch kit, but decent. If you're needing to stick to BRCA rules you may need to buy an ESC (No BRCA rules governing ESC's), but with a BRCA legal motor. Plenty around at reasonable prices... Like this:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skyrc-Ares...IAAOxywFhTcyoj I could go on and on. There are secondhand options too which can be a good way of getting good kit at lower prices. Ask away lads! Jimmy

👍That's good advice, motor wise there's the speed passion v3 motors, they're light weight and don't get too hot, speedo wise the hobbywing v2.1 (same as the speedpassion gran tourismo) is still a good speedo, also cheap

Thanks
That's great thanks. I was looking at the cheetah series also.
Think i might keep my eye out on the second hand market after Xmas for a speed passion v3 and a 120A ESC but if nothing turns up I may go for that cheetah and upgrade if needed at a later date. Thanks guys. |

Just a note of caution, I bought 2 skyrc leopard combos (one with ribbed motor case) for in my children's cars. Both were un-sensored and both suffered with awful cogging, to the point where cars wouldn't pull away without a push.
Ended up putting motors and escs in bin. I have since used speed passion or the hobbyking track star range and both ok, but obviously there are higher priced bits out there which I'm sure would be even better. My speed passion reventon pro (2nd hand) has plenty of programme options and I use a 13.5t in my 2wd, with some boost for on straights and it is lovely to drive

Sky rc Toro 120 is a very good esc, I just ordered the hobbyking version which should be the same.

The SKYRC Toro TS120 is a top notch piece of kit. I have three and they have all been fantastic.
The Trackstar GenII is, in theory, exactly the same, but I had one of them and it failed during calibration. Credit to HobbyKing, they refunded me for it OK. Paired with the SkyRC Ares motors listed above gives you top quality, BRCA legal kit at reasonable prices. The cheaper Sky stuff listed above IS sensored, so shouldn't suffer from the problems you described. Jimmy

There's quite a few guys at my local club who've had those toro's fail. They seem to be either good ones are they pack up pretty quickly. The last one I saw let go caused a fire.

I thought there were some cheap imitation Sky RC speedos around? I'm also pretty sure that the Hobbyking Turnigy speedos are not Sky RC ones, they may look the same but insides are different. From what I've seen (not used them myself yet) the Sky RC speedos are good, when my Vipers pack up I suspect that this will be the way I will go.
For motors I use Thunder Power, cheaper than the big brands and plenty quick enough and seem to stay cool. |

I used to use the same programming module for all my 1/8 and 1/10 sky rc and hobbyking esc.
Never had a problem myself apart from getting water in one and the cases on the 1/8 escs breaking. |

ESC wise Hobbywing Xerun v2.1 120a. From a well known UK shop, just under £60 and still a great speedo. UK distributor backup too.
Motor nVision, currently at just under £45, excellent motors for the money. |
