Motors
Hi all, just after a bit of advice about motors!
i am making a move to off road for next year, and need to buy a 5.5t, is there a BRCA homolgation list which i need to choose of or is it free range? And what would you reccomend! Paul |

there is a BRCA list on the BRCA 'electric board' section of the BRCA website.
but the LRP Vector X11 is a pretty ace motor, add a 12.5mm sintered rotor to it and it would be perfect for 4WD off-road, if you are running 2WD, the 6.5 with the 12.5mm sintered rotor would be your best option. |

Cheers Chris, i will be running 4WD so would be 5.5t, i was looking at the orion race 2008 motor, your thoughts if you have tried it? would you reccomend a 12.5mm rotor for any 5.5t or just the LRP!!

I've had a Speed Passion 5.5 with 12.5mm rotor fixed into my Cat SX all season. Haven't taken it out all year!

Thanks Matt, so what ever motor i do go for a 12.5mm rotor is a must have?
What does a smaller rotor give? im assumning more torques? schumacher dont have 5.5t 12.5mm rotor listed on website!! |

Well i can only talk Speed Passion, and Chris can only talk LRP - and we've both said 12.5mm rotor! However, i think i'm right in saying that 12.5 is smallest LRP rotor, where as Speed passion do also have a 12mm.
You're right on the rotor listed on site. I'm not sure why Speed passion list them for specific motor winds, as it's pointless. I use the 3.5 12.5mm rotor, and this has even been supplied in some 5.5 motors!!

Thanks Matt, thought it was a bit strange putting winds with them!!
So assuming i went for the speed passion, better of buying it and checking the rotor as it may have the 12.5mm one in already? Paul |

I would not get a 5.5 but get a 6.5 as cells are geting more and more powerfull and if we go lipo next year a 5.5 will be to much a 6.5 is all you need in a 4wd.
As for brands Nosram/LRP Dont really like water. Novak good smooth motors they are more water tight than most but still advisable to put soem blue tack around parts But built in sensor cable so if it goes wrong its major work. Losi good all round motors good if your on a budget Orion/Peak/Speed Passion Ok with water but very strong magnets so very torque not all ways desired in off road. Just my opinion. A

They aren't motors for people on a buget, they are just competitivly priced, and as good as any other brand. I don't think the 5.5 motors will be unused next year, if lipo's are made legal, as I used a Losi 4.5 quite a bit this year, as it has a very smooth power delivery.

Yeah. The last one i took apart had a 12mm rotor in it, and that was bought fairly recently. 12mm will make it actually smoother on power delivery. Personally i run 12.5 though as i sat. I know some that were shipped early this season were 12.5 - so it could be pot luck!

for a Brushless 6.5, you have a few choices really if you want a quick motor...
1) Speed Passion 2) Hacker/Losi 3) Others The reason I list them like that is because I've been running them with Lipo in the touring car class all year long and time after time they've been the quickest motors out there (that have not blown up) I've seen a number of Novak/LRP/Orion motors blow, but not one Hacker/Speed Passion yet. If you are going to change the rotors, get yourself a few shims. I've found that changing between 12/12.5 and 13mm rotors the play in the motor was slightly different, so you need to add or take out shims |

Our entire brushless section all run Novak. Thats not to say that the others arent any good, its just that none of us have ever had anything but good performance from the Novak sintered series. No failures either.
