Default Gear diff in ZX-5?

Hi.
New to this forum as you can se on my post count

My question is if it's possible to put a gear diff in a ZX-5? Building a SCT from an old ZX-5 SP and I don't think the ball diff will be able to handle the abuse and power of a 550 motor.

I have been looking at DEX410 differentials and they look bombproof. Any other ideas?

Thanks!

funny you started this thread as I was just going to start one when I heard someone with a zx5 had put a durango diff in.

I was wondering if whoever knows the guy who did it, could supply with some more information regarding the conversion.

Yes, it's possible, but only on a FS, I'm afraid. I didn't tried the mod as I find the stock diffs really good with quality balls.

A Norwegian chap made this mod. so thanks to our friend SHY, I asked him how to do it. That's what he wrote :
Quote:
I have mounted DEX410 difs in Lazer FS and a Lazer KMC-2WD.
I have only used original parts. DEX410 dif-bag and bevel gear 17T, and Kyosho part OT-5 dif-joint.
OT-5 is an old optima part, but its not that hard to get.
This is not possible to mount in the first ZX5 and the SP, only the FS model.

Best regards
Helge Løland

Probably something to do with mating the pinion to the rear shaft on the older cars where the shaft also supported the slipper.

TBH I can see no point in this at all. As has already been said when you have quality balls in the Kyosho diffs there is nothing to beat them anyway (Kyosho ceramic in my cars now ... how nice are they!!). Before people jump on the maintenance bandwagon I re do my Kyosho diffs maybe twice a season and often find I can reuse all but the thrust washers!!!

The stock ZX-5 differentials are nice ones, I agree. But I wanted something that could handle the abuse of SCT racing. I think that gear diffs are far better for this.
Bought 2 DEX410 differentials for my project and they fit nicely.

Maybe it's something to do with the diff casings/housing, aren't they different on the fs?

Ive run Durango diffs in my FS the last 3 meets ive done... the car is good, alot more drive etc and i would say alot easier to push hard.

Im running 10k Front and 5k rear... but at somepoint will be trying 12k front 7k rear.

Im putting ball diffs back in again for this weekends stotfold national i think.. then i will decide which way to run...

If anything with these geared diffs, it seems it puts more stress and strain on the car... and even though ive got all the gearbox shimmed and meshed so its nice and quiet... i just still cant get my head round the noise..

To fit them into the car is very easy... diffs drop straight in, you have to use quite a few shims though.. the gear which runs tho the outdrive etc this is the crucial one for meshing correctly and to make sure its not dbinding on its housing. I had to make up new center shafts out of 2 SP center shafts as they need to be slightly longer... You also need to use the 2.5mm pins from the durango drive shafts.. Just tap out the kyosho ones, re-drill then tap in and glue.

Any more info required, just give me a shout

Nick

Hi Nick,

Did you use the OT-5 outdrive mated to the idler gear output?

Yep, and then meshed...

After you have run it for the first time, make sure you strip it down and check it all... ive done this and made it much better/quieter..

i am loving the geared diffs thing . for buggys. seems like a great idea

just a thought on the sc side of things how about the hyper 10sc diffs casings and drive gears. they really are bombproof
reckon the scrt10 ones would work to.

Nothing to do with ZX-5, but speaking of SCRT10 diffs, there is a CRT5e/SCRT10 to 1:10th buggy conversion currently leading the Finnish championship The first races were held on what are originally 1:8th tracks, so it remains to be seen how the conversion works when they arrive on 1:10th tracks.

A pic of an early prototype.

The one leading the championship has, as far as I know, Tamiya suspension arms and Yokomo big bore shocks instead of the ones in the pic.

Oh well, we've seen that contraption been raced two weeks ago at the last race in Hyvinkaa. Didn't make it to the A-final... in a field of only 21 drivers. Not too impressed by it in a 1/10th track.

Anyway, enough OT, been thinking about getting a pair of those DEX410-diffs for a test.. we'll see how it goes on indoor astro.

I'm thinking about doing the gear-diff mod on my FS2... Nick, do you still run with them?

Thanks

Sure Nick will be along in a bit to explain fully but no, he fairly quickly went back to ball diffs as the gear diffs made the car super agressive on throttle .. net result slower around a lap.
