Default Stupid Spool Question?

is it just me or can you create a spool by really tightening up your front diff?

also, this is associated part AS1703

is it made of metal or plastic?

The spool part is Metal.

The gears are the same material as a normal AE diff.

If you tighten it up, I think it would work as a spool, but then why would they make a spool aswell?

It would probably cause excessive wear e.t.c on the diff

Hi Brett,

Yes effectively you can create a spool by really tightening the diff. Although whilst tightening the diff you can ruin the diff balls and ring, it may still slip slightly and loosen over time.

A spool will be lighter and there is no chance of slipping as it is often a solid piece.

You can take out the diff balls in your diff, glue a bit of card (like you get on header cards) onto one side of each diff ring, assemble your diff back up with the card side of the rings facing the pulley. Tighten it up as usual and you will then have a spool.

1 piece solid spools can cause stress on your drivetrain when you crash, this way (with the card) won't because it will slip slightly in a crash, but behave like a 1 piece spool whilst racing

Hope this helps, bit long winded but it was the only way I could explain it.
Jonny

I think I can answer for Jonny.

Street Cred. You dont have any if you have to cut up your protoform shell's header to supplement diff balls.

"I still have to keep buying you".

I can't believe this. Schumacher can remember my credit card details off by heart, yours has cobwebs on it. I'm still waiting for an Xmas present

Ben, your right
