Default Bury Metro Indoor round 4 Winter series Race Report.

Bury Metro Indoor round 4 Winter series Race Report.

Last Sunday (21st Jan) saw BMRCC return once more to the fantastic Chadderton Raceway venue, only this time the club brought the much talked about EOS carpet to racer in the NW.

The venue kindly allow track build on the preceding Saturday afternoon, which of course maximises race time on the Sunday. The committee along with a handful of members were able to build the track in a couple of hours, which left a good amount of time to test the track, marshal points etc. For those that don’t know Chadderton Raceway is a cork floor gymnastic hall, which incorporates a 100m running track, indoor pole vaulting mats and equipment, so put simply – its vast and allows for plenty of pitting space as well as a large track. What was clear was despite a large track over 500m2 in size, the fantastic grip resulted in really quick lap times, something which we perhaps didn’t fully appreciate before set up.

Anyway, with 126 cars booked in for the Sunday, drivers arrived early in there droves to get in some practice laps. Although we didn’t insist on control tyre for this first meeting, it was clear that Schumacher’s newest Cactus Yellow compound was the most suitable tyre for seriously high traction and low lap times. Shock protectors were mandatory for all racers, with the object being to protect the carpet as much as possible from rips and tears.

With practice and a quick drivers briefing out of the way, we got on our way with qualifying heat 1 of 11 just before 09:30am. As the heats progressed, it was clear that the gap between cars starting needed to be reduced to avoid first car off the grid lapping the last. Quick adjustment from the ever reliable and capable race controller Neil Burdess was all it needed to fix that issue. Heavy breaking into some corners, mostly from the 4wd cars was causing some minor issues with carpet damage, which again is something we can look to address for the next track design. Taking into account the large numbers of drivers, the meeting was ran on auto with only 2 min intervals between heats. This meant that a quick turnaround for racers and marshals was essential throughout the day.
Round 1 of qualifying saw the young Holdsworth brothers take 1st Luke and 2nd Josh in 2wd, Paul Crompton leading the way in 4wd, with Kev Lee hot on his tails.
Luke Holdsworth continued to eat up the track in round 2, with Kev Lee now getting to grips with his 2wd to move into 2nd spot. Despite Luke dropping down the order over rounds 3 and 4, he secured pole in the 2wd A final, with Kev Lee pipping Paul Crompton to 2nd place on the grid. Paul Crompton was proving too hard to catch in the 4wd class as he also took both rounds 2 and 3, securing pole in the 4wd A final, with Kev Lee once again 2nd and Mark Smith taking 3rd on the final grid.

Some seriously close driving through the day, saw many very good drivers miss out on the A final, which provided for some great finals all the way down the list. Most noticeably, the 2wd D final which saw another young Bury driver Tommy Hodgkinson driving his Team C car from 10th on the grid through the pack to fight out the lead with the experienced Paul Calf and Colin Brennan. The three swapped and changed positions on the track several times, but it was an audacious last lap undertaking manoeuver from Tommy, which took Colin by surprise right in front of the rostrum to take the lead and cross the line to cheers from around the hall for a worthy winner. Just 2 seconds separating 1st and Paul Calf in 3rd place.
Overall the day was a huge success with many smiles to be seen and close competitive racing to be had.
Race controllers Neil Burdess / Stu Wood and other committee members throughout the day kept to the schedule and ensured the last final finished around 16:30pm.
The track was put away in a respectable 30 mins by the Bury committee and a good number of racers who kindly stayed behind to make light work. The lure of a few raffle prizes also helped with Tyres and a new Lipo offered out.

Many thanks to all that made the day successful and we hope to see you once again on 11th February 18 for Round 5.

Privileged booking in for for Bury members will open tomorrow and Saturday for everyone else.

Darren

Fantastic meeting, well done to all of the Bury boys for your hard work. Some really fast lads in attendance showing us how it is meant to be done, watching both A finals was awesome.

Just need to put another quid in the heating box next meeting
