my first ever 'proper' rc buggy was a tamiya madcap, followed by the super astute. I'd have to say that the super astute will always be my favorite. I still have it, in bits.

I dread to think how long that gearbox would last with even a mild brushless motor, mind you.

The diff is the weak spot even a double 14 brushed is too much, and i have two Astute's still. I have fond memories of racing them at WLRC when we did rallycross there. Lost intrest when they went to tarmac racing with buggies.

Tamiya Hotshot was my first sucessful car. Phil Booth made me a one way centre drive shaft and at the midlands championships round at Dudley it got FTD and won the A final (1984??)

PB mini mustang was also a good car at the time

Slightly off topic, but do you remember the PB Sizzler 1/10th circuit car? It had de-dion 5 linked rear suspension. I had one in the very early days of 1/10th circuit a few years before touring cars became popular. Of course the early touring cars were just lowered and foam-tyred 1/10th off roads cars. We even did a race at Brands Hatch on the real BTCC weekend. This was in the days of the Listerine BMWs of Will Hoy and Tim Harvey. Happy memories.
i still have a pb sizzler, not an original chassis or front beam though, managed to break them by hitting the metal post in the middle of the ashby track after going airborne once again. i always seemed to end up airborne in pro 10, they did fly well though.......
my modified cougar 1 touring car with mip chain drive and pb two speed would blow the sizzler away any day of the week, just handled so much better and actually stayed on the ground too!

The Phil Booth Tamiya Hotshot was a brilliant car back in the day, wish I still had mine!
So my top 3,

Schumacher CAT XLS
Schumacher Cougar SV
Tamiya Hotshot (with PB mods).

Other great cars I've owed include,
2wd CAT XLS
Tamiya Fox
Yokomo Dogfighter
RC10 B4

Brings back some great memories.

James.

I snapped my PB Sizzler chassis too. Took it down the local B&Q car park one evening and hit a slightly raised grid flat out; carnage!

Got some old photos somewhere, but best of all I have about 5 days of the 1993 Basildon 1/10th Off Road Worlds on VHS. The tapes are buried at my parents house, but I really must get it digitised one day. Some great footage of Masami (Yoko 4wd) and Kinwald (Associated 2wd) cleaning up (if I remember correctly).

he also made some UJ drive shafts instead of the STUPID ally kit ones which bent and fell out literally every other race and roll bars front and rear.

It was an awesome car at the time. I remember him telling me to keep the one way drive shaft secret but the car was so good compared to everything else that all the drivers came and fiddled with it and noticed the mod after about 30 seconds!

I remember my Hotshot. I started with a subaru Brat, upgraded it to a frog lol.... started racing with the legendary Andy Shaw many years ago, (next door neighbor) and got the hotshot after a few months with the frog.
Loved the hotshot and had all the mods, fibreglass chassis, shock upgrades, ally shock mounts, oh the momories!!!! Loved the hotshot and will prob always have a soft spot for it............

Just uploaded some OLD pics. memories of a LONG time ago., around 22 to 25 years ago.......................

wow, the old motor dresser....I always wanted one of them lol.

And the original cat with elastic band holding the front wishbones together......for those of you too young to remember that was a damn good idea, if you hit owt the wishbone just sprung back and very often punted you back onto the track to carry on!!

Good memories

I used to spend hours on my motor dresser, normally tinkering to the point where the motor was worse than when I started and unable to get it back to the starting point!

I've still got my motor dresser in the loft. Might even still have the magnetic pinion for it. Not sure if it works, and doubt it would be much use in the modern brushless world....
