Default Race Results R7 Winter Series 5th May 2013

What can you say about the bank holiday weekend? After months of cold, grey dreariness we had a day of clear skies, sunshine and perfect temperatures, better even than the last round on April 21st. Unfortunately a few of our regulars were absent with Dean and Nick S both caravanning (perhaps they're doing some vital R+D for the upcoming caravan race) and Stumpy away also, but it was still a good turnout with both classes full.

As usual 1/10th seemed to be a war of attrition with the exception of the seemingly indestructible Short Course Losis driven by Adrian and Mark R who had a great battle in heat 2 with Adrian finally winning by less than 5/100 of a second after heat 1 saw Mark D (Losi Ten Te) cross the line more than 20 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. Heat 3 saw a return to form by Dave "Block" R (Schumacher Cat SX3), setting 1/10th FTD of 36.701, chased all the way to the finish line by Adrian. 1/10th newcomer Purcy P (FTX Vantage buggy) also did well with two fourth places and a fifth but more importantly being consistent and keeping it shiny side up, quite an achievement in the 1/10th class.

Group 1 of the 1/8th class was a bit different from previous rounds, as although Alex (HPI Vorza) and Ian R (Losi 8Te 2.0) dominated qualifying they didn't have it all their own way. Heat 1 saw Dave R (Losi 8B 2.0 EU) make a real challenge in the early stages whilst Mark D (Losi 8Te 2.0) showed them the taillights for most of the race in heat 2. In heat 3 it was again Dave R who showed them that a nitro buggy has what it takes to beat the brushless opposition, leading and pulling away from second place man Alex for several laps before a cruel griproll crash allowed Ian to take the win. Adrian (Losi 8B 2.0) also did well after being moved from group 2 to post two consistent 8 lappers (to add to another one in group 2 heat 1) giving him his second A Final placing in as many race meetings, nice going!

Group 2 was an absolute riot, in heat 1 Simon F (Team Nick S HotBodies D8) looked on course to win until his front centre driveshaft expired, relegating him to third place whilst Nick C (Losi 8Be 2.0) took the win followed by Adrian. In the (ahem) absence of the Team Nick S technical staff, a rival team stepped in to supply the parts required allowing Simon to take the win in heat 2 after a race-long 3-way battle with Nick C second and club chairman Matt "Captain Carnage" R (Losi 8B 2.0 EU) third. Levon "Red Baron" Traut (Associated RC8Be) also showed the leading trio the front wheels a few times to take fourth. Heat 3 saw Simon win convincingly by over 18 seconds with Matt second, Nick C third and race controller and all-round good egg Stu not far behind in fourth (in fact two fourth places in qualifying is an outstanding result considering he also found time to run the entire meeting and supply parts to fix Levon "Red Baron" Traut's Associated RC8Be after a heat 1 crash).

The 1/10th final was extremely close, Dave R eventually won by less than a second from Mark D, who in turn was just over a second ahead of third place man Adrian. Mark R was next across the line to take a well-earned fourth, closely followed by Dave G (Kyosho DBX Ve 2.0) whose repaired front shock from a heat 1 crash lasted all day and allowed him to get some 1/10th series points.

In the 1/8th B Final Mark D dominated pretty much from the outset, missing a 9 lapper by just over half a second and putting himself on the grid for the A. Simon came home second with a consistent 8 lapper, followed by Matt in third, again posting 8 laps. Stu crossed the line fourth, 3 seconds outside posting another 8 laps and Levon fought back against his heat 1 incident to take fifth and net another 91 points in the title chase.

The A final was by all accounts the best for some time, another 3-way battle between winner Alex, second place man Ian R and Dave R also finishing the day with a podium placing, taking a convincing third. All three drivers were either in the lead or on their roof at some point or other (including a 3-car pile-up on the double), top entertainment for competitors and spectators alike and showing that an e-buggy, truggy and nitro buggy are all capable of winning on the new-for-2012/2013 track layout. Nick C came home fourth with Adrian sixth, meaning for both of these up-and-coming drivers this is their best result yet and proving they're both worth keeping a close eye on. Bump up winner Mark D finished the day in fifth place to earn another 96 points.

As always thanks to all competitors and organisers alike for a great day's racing. Special thanks to Hayley for enabling Stu to race by handling race control duties in 1/8th group 2 and during the finals, including counting down the final 5 seconds to help the nitro driver's pitcrews.

A rather unusual choice for Man Of The Meeting this time in the form of Ringwood Cheetahs Banger Race controller Dave who, after words were exchanged following a few unruly child problems at last Sunday's play day appeared to have managed to keep control of everyone attending their meeting thereby allowing us to run ours. Thanks Dave!

Levon, Dave G and Stu also took lots of photos during the day:

Final Winter Series round is on Sunday May 19th, as always the track is open on Sundays and Wednesday evenings in between times. Let's hope the current exceptional weather holds out until then!
