TM-2 Spur gear

Its been widely reported on the various RC forums regarding the trouble some people are having with the TM-2 spurs. I have seen a few of the off-white kevlar spurs and after doing some checks there are three actual problems.

For a 48dp 85T spur the diameter is incorrect, this is the reason why the teeth are miss shaped and the spur is noisy and wearing so badly.

The hole in the centre of the spur should be 5mm to centre correctly on the shaft rather than 8mm and why some people are resorting to having to fit bearings and shims to get it to run correctly.

The slot is not required for the TM-2 and can be a problem locking up the spur on the slipper plate pin and stripping teeth if assembled incorrectly.

I am currently having some spurs made which will be the correct diameter for a 48dp 85T spur and that will have the correct size centre 5mm hole with a recess on each side for the slipper plate shoulders to sit into and without the slot. I should have samples by the weekend so I will give you an update on how they run and their availability once they have been tested.

Interesting, I've been having spur issues with my T4, if I brake hard on a high grip surface I kill the spur gear. I'm on spur gear number 4 at the moment, I thought it was just down to the way I'm building it, may be not.

Saying that, I’m still running the kit spur on my TM2 and have had no issues. It runs and sounds smooth with no signs of real wear, may be I’m lucky.

I bet it strips now I’ve said that..

My spur gear stripped straight away,the solution was to use an RW duango 210 spur and durango slipper pads and i got a mate with a lathe to turn the slipper hubs down to 30mm diameter to fit.Reassemble as instructions job done,and it is very quiet.

I know a bunch of people did that whole mod as done by Tom (T-Bone) but getting somone to turn down the diameter of the slipper plates isn't so easy so I was trying to come up with a fool proof solution thats a direct replacement without having to change this or by that, just a new spur gear.

Sounds good to me, I want to try and keep the car as standard as posible so this may be a good solution.

thought I read somewhere that associated spurs and pads fit. Not sure if it's a direct fit or if any modification is needed.

Associated spurs need the centre hole drilling out to 8mm

They do fit I have one on my tm2 but you have to drill the centre hole out which is a little risky if you haven't got a lathe but mine worked out ok and has been fine

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with the standard one apart from the kit supplied gear being to soft.. I upgraded mine to the Black one and its been fine.
The car as a whole seems excellent

There has been a mixed fortunes with the kit spur gear and I considering the TM-2 sold so many so quickly and with such a small amount of development time there was bound to be some teething problems highlighted. From everyone I've spoken to and read about the TM-2 is an excellent car and people are already getting great results, mine is awesome, just a shame about the spur issues.

I have been in touch with some of the Absima Team drivers who have been running the prototype cars for some time and they have had to find an alternative to the kit spur which has meant some modifications for what is currently available. Some owners of the TM-2 have had NO problems at all, some have had nothing but problems and some just haven't been able to even get a hold of the black plastic spur gears.

I hope this new spur will solve the problems and then the thread can close. If you've had a problem and dont want to have to modify the slipper assembly or buy another manufactures spurs and pads this will solve the problem for you.

Hi-I've just done Tom's mod to the spur gear but decided to just throw away the pin altogether...Assembles fine & feels ok, Am I being stupid or will it work!!!!?-, Cheers, Gord...

Er.........I hope you can find it again after chucking it because as far as I can work out you'll only have drive on one of the slipper plates
