Default Rallycross

After seeing the Audi Quattro that Huw won at the UKMicroX raffle and following nagging/harassment from Si, I thought I would ask everyone what they thought about some rallycross racing at Caldicot.

The idea would be that you could take either a rally car from Carisma/Tamiya/etc OR a cheapo touring car and fit it with suitable tyres and a Quattro/6R4/RS200/Escort/Sierra bodyshell and jack up the suspension so that it could cope with the majority of the features we have on our tracks (ok maybe not big jumps!) and have a rallycross series.

The tracks shouldn't have to be toned down much/if at all so buggy drivers would still have the same fun as normal.

What interest would there be?

Tricky one this. I like the idea, but how long would it last ?

I remember back when i started almost 30 years ago, a couple of guys had Audi Quattro bodyshells on their Kyosho Scorpions that raced with the rest of the buggies. Looked great. But the phase didnt last long.

Then their was the Rallycross period in the 90's, which lasted all of about a year or two

I think you'd have to convert buggies though, rather than tourers... ?

I do have a brand new Parma Porsche 911 Carrera body shell, with full interior & spoiler that would good on a buggy though, subtly cut-down....

If it in anyway tones down the tracks then im against it.

Im all for new classes and all that, but a lot of people come to Caldicot for the kind of tracks that are built each week.

Just my 2p worth

I think Pete has cunningly made rallycross sound a bit crap !! sorry Pete ..

Bit I think it could be a good laugh and a fun alternative to SC10 racing and no need to tone down the tracks either ...

We've raced a similar championship at WORM with mini shells on the micro's and its been a run away success so no real reason it wouldn't work on a slightly bigger scale at Caldicot IMHO ....

have a look at my amateur vid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEGJQIgY6lg

All it would need is a cheap TC, and a rally style shell, and there's absolutely loads on ebay and they looks ace ...

So, these go on a 190mm touring car, raise the suspension and put rally tyres on?

Sorry Si, I didn't mean to make it sound crap, honest!
i dearly want a computervision 6r4!

my reference to toning the track down did not mean having a touring car track, more that I meant not having a huge jump, but wall rides, table tops and smaller jumps would still be all possible and i'd just like to add that we don't tone the tracks down for vintage.

Our tracks have not been about big jumps or craziness for quite some time.

Sorry Huw, I've had to vote no, as cool as your car looks

Club night can get a little tight as it is now with micro, vintage, short course, 2WD and 4WD. Another class would squeeze things still further.

Maybe if the club dropped a class (micro, vintage or short course), and replaced it with the rally cars, that would be cool . Or start racing at 7pm, but that may be hard for some ?

Rob.

(However, if somebody made a GOOD rally Sunbeam Lotus, I'd HAVE to join in and vote yes !!! )

Rob, we're thinking maybe trying it as a short term series like vintage so it wouldnt be too bad. Only 6 nights a year after all!
In the meantime lets get onto kamtec to do a shell for you. A full heat of these for you?

That's what I'm talking about !!

I make master moulds of vintage cars and vans for Oxford diecast all day long as a day job, so making an acurate master is no problem for me. But I really can't be bothered to turn my spare time into more of what I do as a day job.

But,

I have the car, if somebody wants to measure it up and produce a mould, game on.
