Default Micro Nationals Round 2 - Stafford - Race Report

Following on from first Micro National at Bury St. Edmonds in September, Round 2 of the Micro Nationals took place at Stafford last weekend.

John Robson and his band of merry men laid out a superb track. A mixture of fast but technically challenging infield sections saw the drivers struggling for tyre choices throughout the day, however by the finals it was clear that 1/10th foams were the way forwards.

Pro-Stock

Qualifying
Qualifying was dominated by Chris “The Hereford Hot-Rod” Bottle with an amazing time of 18/305.94 making him the only person to qualify on 18 laps all day! Dan “Ozzy” Osborne shot up from 11th to 2nd in Round 3 with 17/301.70, nearly an entire lap behind FTQ with Steve “Tank” Davis just over a second behind Dan with 17/302.80
Pro-Stock would seem to be a battle of tyre choices. Steve tried rubbers and foams throughout qualifying but, as with Dan and Chris, decided to stick with trued down 1/10th TC foams for the final.

Qualifying results:
1st Chris Bottle – 18/305.94
2nd Dan Osborne – 17/301.70
3rd Steve Davis – 17/302.80

B-Final
Chris Hudson led the B-final off from Wes “Man flu?” Myles in 2nd and UK-MicroRC regular Lee Carr in 3rd.
A scrappy final saw Lee Carr take charge of race from the start until half way though when he came together with back markers which gave the lead to Wes Myles, sporting CML’s new pivot ball suspension assembly on his FTX Blaze, with Lee holding off the charge of Rych Brind by 2 seconds. John “Mini-JT” Timberlake took an impressive 4th place with possibly the only 2WD car on the day! John has been pioneering his Losi Mini-T Pro in a 4WD dominated class and reaped the rewards with an impressive drive. There were a lot of people complimenting him on his Mini-T during the day but will we see a 2WD revival in the 1/18th class?
Mark Dicks piloted his FTX Blaze home in 5th place in front of Chris Hudson, Rob Chalmers, Rob Hillman, Ben Clifton and Steve Hill.

B-Final results:
1st Wes Myles – 16/308.57 – FTX Blaze – CML Distribution
2nd Lee Carr – 15/307.86 – FTX Blaze ST
3rd Rych Brind – 15/309.25 – FTX Blaze

A-Final
The Pro-Stock finals have always been a close affair with 5 minutes of ‘seat of your pants’ racing and the A-final would be no exception. Chris and Dan shot off from the line and battled for 1st place for the first few minutes with an awesome display of tight driving before a small mistake by Dan pushed him down to 3rd behind Steve. With Steve stalking Chris for the win, the two club mates battled hard till the 4 minute mark when a tumble by Chris saw Steve drive off into the distance and take his 2nd National win in a row with Dan finishing 2nd in front of Chris in 3rd. Even with the battles and tumbles all 3 drivers crossed the line with 18 laps, a testament to the super fast yet consistent driving shown in Pro-Stock.
Stu Harlow finished in 4th place followed by Jamie Curtis, Simon Osborne, Jonathan Kedge, Andrew Vincent, Sam Clifton and Chris Green.

A-Final results:
1st Steve Davis – 18/311.75 – FTX Blaze - CML Distribution, Team Scream.
2nd Dan Osborne – 18/313.26 – FTX Blaze - UKMRC, Tekin, rcmodelimports, Gecko Foams.
3rd Chris Bottle – 18/314.58 – FTX Blaze - Team Scream.

Modified

Qualifying
Jamie Curtis set the bar after Round 1; an impressive 13 seconds clear of Cris Oxley in 2nd and Bill Pier close by in 3rd with his Blaze ST.
Cris and Stu Harlow both pulled a lap clear in the following rounds with Cris taking Modified FTD as he did at Bury with Stu only 3 seconds behind him for 2nd place with Jamie a respectable 3rd.

Qualifying results:
1st Cris Oxley – 17/309.52
2nd Stu Harlow – 17/312.01
3rd Jamie Curtis – 16/305.81

A-Final
Cris took a comfortable win in Modified, a clear lap over the rest of the field whilst all eyes were fixed on the battle for 2nd place between Stu and Jamie. Afew early mistakes by Jamie would see him drop down to 5th after lap 1 only to climb his way back up the field and onto the rear bumper of a struggling Stu. Both drivers battled hard to the very end with Stu taking 2nd place by only 0.1secs!
A run of bad luck mid race for Bill scuppered his chances of a podium this time but he found himself comfortably in 4th place in front of Bede Constantinides, Tom Hudson, Carl Venter, Rob Chalmers and Duncan Greer.

A-Final results:
1st Cris Oxley 17/312.25 – FTX Blaze – UKMRC, Tekin, Gecko Foams
2nd Stu Harlow 16/308.30 – FTX Blaze - CML Distribution, Team Scream
3rd Jamie Curtis 16/308.46 - FTX Blaze

The BRCA Micro Committee would like to thanks John Robson and his team from the Stafford Club for an excellent track layout, brilliant trophies and a well run meeting.
The Micro Committee would also like to thank Wim from AMC for his continued support with the Action Model Centre shop that attends each round.

The BRCA Micro Nationals travel to Hereford for Round 4 on November 4th, a meeting that promises to be one of the best micro events to date!
