Cougar gear wear?

Hi guys,

I run a first batch cougar on the local outdoor dirt track and have noticed that the gears seem to wear quite a bit - certainly far more than the typical 3-gear transmission on other 2WD buggies. I'm wondering if the multi-gear design is causing this or perhaps the alloy used wears too fast?

I'm running the V2 plastic gearboxes and edges are sealed both with grease and a layer of tape to keep the dirt out.

If in fact it's normal for the gears to wear quickly, are there options to build a more bullet-proof gearbox? I was looking at the RW gear set or perhaps the Schumacher optional steel gear combo?

the cougar that my son ran wore gears quite quickly - after speaking to an engineering minded chap at our track, who's son's cougar was also going through gears quite quickly, we invested in some proper abec rated bearings. Problem solved.

The standard cougar bearings do not have an abec rating, and in my experience, they wear out quickly but it is not always possible to notice the wear until the gears are done.

What grease are you using on them?

I've found that's very important to prevent wear. I use Tamiya Ceramic Grease on mine (we have it in stock).

Would this wear be a problem on the 2011 spec SV?

My car has the latest spec gears (ALL METAL) and is 3 meetings old indoors.

The 2011 kit will be fine with the new steel ones, but to be honest, I'm only on my second set of original ones in a year.

And don't forget folks, RC cars wear!

Thanks for the input guys - I've a new bearing set on the way together with a new set of gears.

Have the intention to race this car more but the gears haven't been confidence inspiring - hope the bearings are the solution.

BTW, do the RW gears last longer?

just get the new speed secret ones from schuy
