Default 180,000 mile golf, should I?

I'm in the market for a cheap to run car for the computes.

I've been offered a 2005 MkV Golf TDi with 180,000 miles on it for £1500.

Now normally I wouldn't even cosider it, but, I've known the car and its 1 owner from new and I know it has been religously dealer serviced all it's life and, as you'd expect, nearly all the miles are motorway miles.

Add to that the trip I just made to Swansea in a mates old Passat with 237,000 miles on the original engine, turbo and gearbox which still drives really well.

What to do... what to do???

Sounds like you know the history quite well, I'd say go for it.
The last VAG I had I'd 100k in less than 2 years gave it death every where and it still felt like new (drive my real cars like my RC cars so you know it had a hard life ), the only thing that let it down was the local dealer who were just plain incompetent.

If you know it, its a no brainer really. Make sure its had all its bits sorted in the service, such as any timing belts etc, as they are £££ should be good for another 100k!

I'd go for it Craig @ that price; I bought a 125k mile A4 TDI the other day and it goes like a train. Feels as if it's only done 50k miles.

I have a Mk4 golf TDI on the original engine and it's done 1/4 mil and counting

I'd snap his hand off for that price

Buy it, clock it, get a fresh MOT and dodgy service history off ebay and sell it for £4500. You would be suprised of the number of people who wont check the history.

By the way this is a joke.....

my mate has the 1.8t with 210bhp chip on 179k, runs perfect as its had the correct oil at every service.
i run a 1.8t passat with 150k on it, again dealer serviced before i got it

being a dealer seviced car it should be good for a long time to come as long as you keep up with the servicing.

I would Craig...
Just make sure you make the trip to South Hereford for servicing if you want stealer servicing.... They are cheaper than any other stealers I have been to, and never ever quibbled any small warranty issues I have had (only one problem on my current golf where the nearside rear door wouldnt open, which was fixed in less than one hour!).

Cheers
Mark

I did buy it. It was on a private plate so turned out to be a 2004 (one of the first Mk5's) so it doesn't have a trip computer. But also turns out to be an SE model which I didn't realise so has A/C and cruise control

She's a little bit tatty in places and doesn't exactly purr when you first start it but runs ok.

Needed tax, one tyre, a new radiator, service due and ARB drop links are rattling but that seems all so far

Tax £60, Tyre £35, Service £85 incl PD oil, rad £72 and a favour from the old man to fit it will do ARB links when they start to annoy me LOL

I also overestimated my negotiating skills and ended up paying £1700 so total cost was still under £2000 but I'm happy so far
