As Karting above has said .. WORM run a indoor WRC championship every summer for Mini bodied micro's ... we use mixed surface with either foam tyres for tarmac style rallies or stretch inner tubes over the foams for more drift style loose surface rallies ..

The loose style rallies are amazing fun, particularly when holding a good sideways drfit

drift style - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlrxOU6_IMI

foam style - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEGJQIgY6lg

Mini's like this -

and coming soon Mk2 Escort

I reckon Minicross would be awesome. Not out an out power but closely matched just like the real thing.

Just to revive this, and as I'm in the process of building a Group B replica, does anyone know where I can get some suitable scale decals from the era?

Doesn't have to be entirely accurate - I'm just trying to create that Group B feel.

Looked on ebay but wasn't a huge choice - and what there was seemed pretty expensive.

Well here we go - finally finished the Group B Audi S1 beasty!

Firstly - massive thanks to Andy Johnson for the awesome paint job and Craig Whitehead (Jackeltrader / PACE Design) for the spectacular repro graphics.

Shell is from the USA - Team Blue Groove item. Great quality even if not the strongest of shells. Mounted up on a TC4 chassis with a few mods to give some extra droop and clearance. Tyres are Schuey SST rally blocks in white compound. Motive power is Nosram Matrix Evo with a Losi 6.5 but this is making way for a boosted HW 60A ESC and a 13.5 as the 6.5 was rather brutal (even for a Group B replica).

Has generated a bit of interest at FORCC with a few TC's being removed from lofts - who knows we might have stumbled upon something here?

Me - I just think it looks the tits - but then I've always been a Group B nut!!

Do these need to be run from flat pan touring cars or buggies?

A bunch of us rallied around Kidderminster track a few years ago. Doesn't take much to convert a tourer to rallying.

Seriously want to get this up and running as a class!

What's under the body?
Where do you buy the body from?
Etc etc

Over the last few weeks I've been getting my old TA01 ready for a run round at FORCC, the only thing i'm not sure on is gearing? will it put up with a 13.5? and what gearing options are available on a chassis like that.....anyone have any ideas?

I love rallycross and would love to run this class but don’t have a touring car at the moment. Surly all it needs is for the touring car boys to get outside and play in the dirt. Most bashers have a touring car or did have a touring car with a rally shell anyway I know I used to have a toy rc rally car back in the day. It’s weird that there isn’t a rally or rallycross class seeing as there is nothing new needed in the concept, dirt tyres, body shells and chassis of the right scale are all present.

Hardest part would be convincing touring car drivers to get there beloved car dirty.

If this does start to kick off then a rally cross my next car for sure.

There has been several classes over the years for rally cars, both buggies with rally shells and raised touring cars. All of them have died due to lack of drivers taking part. The HPI Rally Challenge was the most successful, it lasted 3 years before disappearing in 2003.

I've run them in both the converted buggy and jacked up tourer styles and its easy to see why they don't exist as a class for long.
The problem is that either way they are like the real thing, neither a true on road car nor a true off roader. That means that whilst you can run them on a 1/10th off road track, they aren't as good as a buggy, and whilst you can use a touring car track with a few jumps on it, well thats just touring cars that don't handle as well.
The best place I ever raced them was the buggy based widebodies (mine was a LWB Optima Mid under an RS500 shell) at the old Southend track. That was a true multisurface course but with few jumps, so the cars went well there and looked awesome.
Rallying needs suitable tracks - flatter than a 1/10th buggy track and multisurface in order to separate itself.

Rallycross Si - not Rallying - subtle difference there.

I guess that's why the surface at FORCC is more suitable than most then. Polished wood floor without an excess of jumps and obstacles lends itself to being able to modified TC chassis as well as the buggies.

I'm not saying the class is going to take off - I just built the car for fun as I'm a Group B nut - but it certainly went well and generated some interest last week. Who knows - if enough get built we may be allowed to run a heat for a few weeks at FORCC to see how the class goes?

I agree with you on Southend though - 1990 British Rallycross GP I finished 3rd in the D final with a CAT XLS running a John Welch Opel Xtrac replica shell - good days!!

I'm so glad i found this thread, we we're talking about rally x a few months ago thinking it would be a good option. Our idea was to build a figure of 8 track (bridge jump) comprising of dirt, gravel tarmac.

Finding a cheap maybe old style car maybe tt01 and converting them to suit the track, maybe different rally groups i.e motor spec. I personally think this would be a great class to run and fun to watch.

I'm sure body shells could be done to suit a particular chassis
