What was the value of the original one?
Printed on it, it will have a microfarad rating (uF) and a voltage reading.
As it's only purpose is as a reservoir/decoupling capacitor i'd say any value between 1000uF to 2200uF at 16v would be fine.
It wouldn't do any harm to increase the value, but as they increase they get larger.

The thing is it didn't come with one as I got it second hand.

Thanks, I've found some on Demon Power Products but they come without wires attached. What gauge wire should I use and which leg of the cap is positive.

The negative lead is generally the shorter one, and it's also denoted by an arrow with a negative symbol.
No need to buy one from a rc shop as the type available from an electronics outlet will be of equal or better quality, probably.

The value not printed on the label is the switching speed. Cheap capacitors are slow, and will not give you the same performance as the originals. When you find the same capacitor as the original in the shops, they are not much less than the originals from the speedo manufacturer.

Cheap capacitors will raise the speedo temperatures and be less smooth in throttle response. If you need a replacement, make sure you have one that meets all the specifications of the originals. HTH

There's loads! Would somebody be able to link me to one that will be the most suitable and also what gauge wire should I use to connect it to the esc?

Thanks

n where do you thing the rc manufacturers buy theres from like?they dont make there own they just stick there names on everything its like buying digestive biscuits cheap or mcvities there probably produced on the same production line.

ebay is the cheapest place to get them from its where most people buy them from rather then paying more at maplins they do the same thing

If you want a good quality capacitor search eBay for " Rubycon ".
I have some of these in some of my radio gear dating back to the early 80s and they're still in good form. Like most things Japanese, they're well made and wont dry up like cheapo ones.
Anything from 16v upwards will be fine.
