21st Annual Cactus Classic 2007

The 'Cactus Classic' is an annual event for Electric Off-Road classes - held at the fantastic Scottsdale R/C Speedway, or 'SRS' for short. Comprising three main classes, 2WD & 4WD buggy and 10th electic truck.

This years event is the 21st running of the Cactus and had 370 entries in total for the various classes - of course with so many heats there was huge gaps between runs so a lot of people choose to do more than one class to get more racing and less sitting around, in all there were 210 drivers in attendance. Neil Cragg and Paul Bradby both ran all three main classes, where the other UK guys only ran their usual 2&4wd buggies.

The 'Cactus' is one of the biggest Electric Off Road events of the year and regularly attracts plenty of top names - this year even more so, with many drivers from around the world wanting to get some practice before the world championships later this year in Japan. Hot Bodies, Yokomo, Tamiya - all sent their best overseas drivers to compete.

Liverc.com was covering the event with live video and audio feeds via their website, along with a real-time chat system for interested parties to come and interact with the commentator - passing on encouragement and comedy abuse in equal measure. This was a brilliant system which was the next best thing to actually being there.

One thing was clear from the outset - that to go fast you had to quad the huge section in front of the rostrum - this really was huge and lead to many retirements when things went wrong.

Since I couldn't attend the Cactus, I met up with Lee Martin before he left for the USA and handed him one of my Nikons to snap a few shots. In the end the responsibility fell to Lee, Neil Cragg, Neil Round, Paul Bradby - maybe some other randomers in there. So, enjoy their photos - and since the guys also went to the Silver State 8th nitro race the next week there will be photos from that event SOON.
