The Euro off road series, or eos as its commonly referred, is a series run by Uwe Rheinard and Scotty Ernst - designed as a sister series to their successful ets, euro touring series, meetings.

I decided on the wednesday to attend for a spot of photography and got in touch with Dave church of 'rc domination' fame - whom I knew was attending. Luckily Dave enthusiastically mentioned there was space for me in his car and hotel room (!), bargain!
So it was 'on'.

Dave lives close to the sea! - its just over there....

Things were tight for the oOple team of one

After gathering my camera gear it was a 6 hour drive down to herne bay where the lads (dave poulter was also coming) were assembling.

The lads had booked onto the channel tunnel thing where cars mysteriously board trains and travel under oceans - its like tomorrow's world!

Left: Dave and Dave had to make room for me and monkey in the big bus.

After being blown away by the whole science of the thing and being too lazy to get out of the car during the ride we eventually landed in France just before 8pm - or actually that's 9pm because its all foreign.

Charleroi was approximately 153.2 miles from the French end of the tunnel - which was entirely made up of fast motorway. Unfortunately a bit too fast as we picked up out first speeding camera 'flash' at 9:40pm local time.

DC gets some help to book onto the Chunnel

oOple monkey likes to meet people

WTF - going on a train, but whilst still in a car!??? SCIENCE!!!!!!!!

We stayed in the car - too afraid to let in the air of the underpassage.

Monkey was having a good time

This race is the second in the EOS series and was taking place at the same venue as the EIR race held a month earlier, at Charleroi. The inaugural race was held in the czech repubic, and the turnout wasn't impressive in numbers but the quality of drivers at the sharp end was of course high.

This second round being much closer to the uk meant a few of the uk's best were going to make it over for this one. And two of them were in this very car.

RC Domination and dBoots are sponsoring this report - so thanks to them!

Belgium looked a bit grey

We arrived at the track around 7:30am - only a few hardened racers were already there and practicing. The track was open for a practice free-for-all before heat-order practice started at 8:30am sharp.

When entering the race hall you're immediately struck by the impressive track layout at the Charleroi track - with a barely feasable mountain of a wall ride stretching way up the side of the far corner of the hall being the biggest feature..

The track surface mainly consists of astroturf but brick and wood also play a significant part of the surface - to mix up the traction and make things a little more interesting.

Two wheel drive would be up first - running four rounds of practice in the morning before the four-wheelers did the same in the afternoon.

The guys were all busy gluing up the dBoots control tyres in the morning. The organisers set the new dBoots 'nanobyte' as the control tyre and in 2WD any dBoots tyre on the front.

Qualifying heats would be re-sorted after practice - the 3rd and 4th round of controlled practice would use the 3-fastest consecutive laps to do the seeting. Dustin Evans took the fastest 3-lap time in round three - it doesn't mean much of course and all the drivers are on similar pace in the top 10, but it's an indicator for who's going to be quick.

Thanks to Lee Martin for being the drink sponsor for this race report.

Jorn Neumann was the quickest out when the 4WD buggies kicked off after lunch - throwing his DEX410v3 around the track like a maniac - edging out Lee Martin by 0.7 of a second over their fastest 3 laps.

This track is crazy!

Komet-RC chassis braces for the C4.1

Wouter Wynen is running the CML C4.1 in 2WD. The mid-motor conversion for the Associated B4.1. Wouter's car is running new chassis bracing parts he designed himself and markets under the brand 'Komet'.

One of the braces off the car

The braces on Wouters setup are raised slightly

Wouter says he went to Germany last month for a race - which he won using these new parts on his C4.1 and since that time they've become quite popular. The braces run down the sides of the C4.1 chassis - the initial idea was to provide strength and stop the chassis bending, but the braces are tunable to tune the flex. Depending on how they're mounted. Raising the braces up using spacers, the chassis will be stiffer.

Check them out at www.rc-offroad.be/komet-rc.htm

The penultimate round of 4WD practice was the first officially timed round. After Jorn had taken the previous two rounds with the fastest 3 consecutive laps - this time it was Lee Martin upping the pace slightly, almost a full second in front of Jorn who was less than half a second in front of Tom Cockerill. Mike Truhe was the best of the American guys in 5th but things were very very close.

Lee Martin pushed hard on his way to fastest 3-lapper

4WD timed practice finished at around 4:30pm and there were just 4WD Short Course left to run. The Team Durango 4WD truck seems to be the dominant force again.

Lee Martin - TRF502X

Lee's car is the Tamiya TRF502X - the same as he's been using for quite a while. Lee was running a new version of the Rudebits camber link parts which now bolt onto the upper decks front and rear to give more longditudional stiffness but still allowing the chassis some flex.

The new camber link plate bolts to the top deck also

The inner camber links are lowered lots

Lee tried some modifications to the steering knuckles to get more physical lock, but quickly removed it as he felt it didn't work too well.

After the last round of 4WD buggy and 4WD SC practice had finished everyone went home, the end. Just kidding - actually nothing much changed except now there was every type of buggy and truck on the track at once as the proceedings reverted to 'open practice', or as I prefer to call it 'free for all'.

Apparently the track wasn't going to close - at least that's what Nathan Ralls said, who himself was sleeping right next to the venue in his campervan.

Saturday 10th March 2012
Practice got underway early - officially kicking off at 7am, before qualifying would start. Much like practice day, the qualifying would take part in two blocks - with 2WD buggy and SC in the morning, before 4WD buggy and SC in the afternoon.

Scotty Ernst marks up some boots of the 'd' sort.

dBoots are the tyre for all the EOS races

The drivers had to get their tyres marked up by race control before using them. Drivers were allowed 3 sets per car maximum, and 2 for the 2WD fronts.

You don't want to marshall this lads car slowly.

Lots of trannies

Qualifying kicked off just after 9am with the first heat of 2WD buggy. Qualifying would be round-by-round, with the best two from five to count. There would be 4 qualifiers today and the final qualifier just prior to finals on the Sunday.

Above: Lee Martin's Tamiya/VEGA

Lee Martin took his Tamiya/VEGA buggy to the TQ in round one - and was the only driver to make it through for 15 laps. Dustin Evans was second best but a whole 5 seconds off the 15 lap pace.

Jorn Neumann was a second further back in 3rd. Lee says the secret to his early success is cough medicine. Lee acquired a cold on Wednesday just before coming to the EOS race but is battling through it with the aid of some nightnurse.

Jorn Neumann in third was running the standard DEX210 - where Hupo, 6th in round 1, was running a longer chassis prototype which he prefers.

Round two saw Lee Martin again on top - just missing out on 15 laps this time, and things were much closer at the sharp end with Jorn now 1 second behind and having a 2 second tie-up with Dustin Evans during the run. Dustin came in third.

Hupo went 6 seconds quicker, which he put down to just driving harder - since he had no mistakes in either run.

EEEEEOG from Rouge-RC

Lee Martin solidified the overall TQ by taking the third round of qualifying with a new fast time. Someone could still go equal on points and then it'd be down to who had the fastest winning time - but Lee wasn't going to make it easy.

Jorn Neumann had a bad run, making several mistakes and eventually pulling his car off. Dustin Evans was again on a mission and took third in round with his fastest time of the day so far. Darren Bloomfield went a solid 7 seconds quicker than previously to take second overall.

Oskar Levin

Oskar Levin has only been racing since 2005 but is already kicking some ass. Oskar won the 2011 Swedish National in 2WD and is running the TLR 22 here at the EOS.

Oskar's 22 is quite standard - without all the fancy bling parts of a lot of the 22 drivers.

Right:Oskar is a legend among warriors.

LRP 7.5 motor provides the power for the 22.

In 4WD - Oskar's chosen weapon is the vintage XX4, just like his Swedish team-mate, Otto. Oskar is running the oneway clicker quite loose as thats the way he rolls.

Lee Martin finally confirmed TQ - 4 for 4, there's no mistaking that Lee's on top. Round four of qualifying saw a battle between Jorn and Lee - Jorn took the lead on time but couldn't pass Lee on the track and eventually Lee pulled a 1 second gap which he held to the line to set a new fastest - just a second ahead of Jorn who was through for his first 15 lap run.

2WD qualifying finished at 12:45am-ish with the final round left to run in the morning. The 4WD class it was announced would run all 5 qualifiers today instead of leaving one until the morning.

So the 4WD qualifying kicked off at 13:25 and Jorn Neumann was straight on the pace with his brand new V3 car. No one could match Jorn and he took the round by 9 seconds from Mike Truhe - both on 15 laps, with Dustin Evans third just missing out on the extra lap.

4WD specialist and 2WD TQ man, Lee Martin, pulled off after 4 minutes with a glitchy ESC - and was to install a new one before round two.

4WD Short Course truck was a battle between Hupo Honigl and Jorn Neumann - their trucks were the class of the field out front and they swapped places on time, and on the track, several times. Jorn was pushing hard to take the win but Hupo kept it steady - and eventually a mistake from Jorn allowed Hupo to stretch it out and take the round. Mike Truhe came in third with the first of the TLR trucks.

TLR's Big Mother Truckers

The TLR lads from the US of A are racing 2WD and 4WD buggy, but also 4WD SC with the Losi Ten SCTE. The trucks are a little heavier (by a factor of X3) than some but they're built like tanks. The guys were running very heavy oils and Losi 8ight springs to calm the trucks down.

Special spring collard to use 8ight springs

Truhe proves it's pretty light

OOOF - that's a big toy.

Oh man this was getting boring - Lee had dominated 2WD and Jorn was looking to do the same, taking as many rounds as Lee had in the 2WD by taking his 4th round of 4WD qualifying in a row. MADNESS.

Lee Martin put in his quickest time but became the meat in a Durango sandwich as Hupo backed his team mate Jorn up, taking third overall. Darren Bloomfield lead a charge of drivers who missed out on the 15 lapper by fractions - and tore his vintage XXX4 belt to shreds in a process - some time with the legendary Spashett would help him get the car rebuilt in time and slipper set up so it, erm, slips. Or at least sometimes.

One way!

The Swedish TLR guys are much like many TLR guys - they rock nice paint schemes on their 2WD buggies but for some reason have plain white shells on their 4WD's?!?!!

Most TLR guys are running the XXX4 touring car buggy but the Swedes love the older but far more respected XX4 off road buggy. Both guys are running the lightweight composite front differentials with the oneway centre clickers set to 'loose' - the swedish guys have it right we think.

TLR Sweden love the one-way clickers

This car is fast because it has a one way, FACT

Look at those front wheels spin - this is nice

The final round of qualifying ended at around 6:30pm - the extra round of 4WD qualifying from the published schedule finished with a new winner - Jorn's tyres were pretty shot having done all practice and qualifying and a few small mistakes were enough for Hupo to take it up.

Jorn finished second just barely ahead of Tom Cockerill and Dustin Evans - all three on 15 laps 5:15 times.

Team Durango Lads

The Team Durango pair of Hupo and Jorn dominated 4WD qualifying between them - both driving the DEX410 of course. Hupo's round-5 winning car is an all-alloy beast of a thing, with the every option possible thrown at it, whilst Jorn's overall TQ car is closer to a standard car, just with the addition of a few choice upgrades for strength.

Hupo Honigl and Jorn Neumann

Lots of metal

Alloy turnbuckles from the DESC410R roll bar kit

Alloy side pods for much stiffness

OCTA WARRIOR

Extra 2 degree hub carriers

New alloy steering horn

Hupo uses the rear flex brace CLAMPED - for stiffness

Jorn's car is more standard than Hupo's and he's not using all the same option parts - sticking with the moulded side pods rather than the stiffer alloy that Hupo's car is running.

Jorn's ride - a familiar car given his recent form.

Jorn's car is a V3 - with some parts off his older car. Jorn is used to the smaller shocks and fears change.

Jorn's tyres were shot but still gripping well!

Jorn uses the rear skid weight always

Sunday 11th March 2012
The final day of the Charleroi round of the EOS kicked off with a bit of controversy when the Norway guys got 'done over' by a pikey taxi driver who took them on the grand tour of the area instead of the direct 3km route. The guys refused to pay and the po-po turned up to sort it all out.

Taxi scumbag man puts his story forward

The police didn't want to be photographed

Magne Kobbevik is the Norwegian team coach - and also happens to be an Olympic beach volley ball player, currently injured but hoping to make it to the London 2012 event to compete for GOLD. Magne refused to pay the taxi driver and after accompanying the po' outside, got his own way and defeated the evil taxi man.

That Norge guy could have taken them all on - punt them over the fence like a volley ball.

After the excitement of a real-life COPS episode - the final round of 2WD Buggy & SC qualifying kicked off at 8:30am. 2WD finals would follow before the 4WD event concluded later in the day.

Tom Cockerill took the final round of 2WD buggy with his Schumacher Cougar SV2, and was the only driver to make it through for the extra lap. Lee Martin had already sewn up the TQ and settled for 2nd in round this time.

2WD A Final Leg One
Lee Martin lead them away as the cars came round the sweeper. There was a lot of bumping and grinding behind but the front 3 or 4 cars made it through the first corner nicely.

Jorn over-jumps and loses it - Tom has nowhere to go and Bloomfield has the same feeling

Jorn managed to get away

Jorn chases Lee

Lee was hotly pursued by Jorn but Lee was too fast and pulled away slowly each lap - now Dustin Evans was on Jorns tail and closed in. Dustin chased Jorn closely for a few laps before making his move on the inside around the sweeper - taking a few inches lead. Jorn tried to close the door and the pair came together. Jorn was the biggest loser and Tom Cockerill was through for 3rd and sniffing Dustin's rear end.

Dustin caught Jorn and started to look for a way past

Jorn flips but Dustin stays in control

Tom put some pressure on but a bobble cost him a few car lengths and as the time expired the order up front didn't change. Lee Martin won by miles and wasn't ever really pressured.

Tom Cock chases Dustin but there's no time left.

oOple - or oople - is a made up word that describes a number. Double, triple, quadruple and then since we didn't know what came after quadruple we decided it must be fiveoople, and that no bigger number could be conceived. The word oople was born.

2WD A Final Leg Two
Lee made a rare mistake half way into the first lap when he went too tight on a corner right in front of the drivers stand - getting the car up and over onto its roof. The marshall wasn't able to get to it until pretty much every car had passed by - dropping Lee down to 9th and only a miracle would save him.

Jorn was out front, chased by Tom Cockerill, Dustin and Darren. Tom made an error going up the wall of death which allowed Dustin through for second - and another error saw Bloomfield past.

Jorn looked to have a decent lead but now Dustin had clear track in front of him, he pursued Jorn and reeled him in. Jorn was pushing hard but couldn't shake him as Dustin got close.

Dustin looked for the inside coming over the tabletop and up the wall of death but couldn't do it and fell back slightly before attacking again and looking for any way past. The time was ticking away and it was now or never as Scotty Ernst on the microphone went off his nubs describing the intense battle between the current Reedy champion Neumann and last years champ Dustin.

Again - Dustin came through for the last lap and took the inside line over the tabletop before thundering up the wall of death and straight past Neumann as the extra length of the TLR 22 nosed ahead. Neumann had a different line and shunted Evans from behind but Evans kept his composure - and the lead. Jorn gave it everything over the centre section of the track - attempting to clear the whole section in one he caught the fencing and crashed out to confirm second place as Dustin crossed the line for the win.

2WD A Final Leg Three
The third and final leg was going to be down to Lee Martin, Dustin Evans and Jorn Neumann for the overall win. Lee Martin didn't make a mistake this time and kept his cool. For the first few laps it was start order, Lee, Jorn and Tom Cockerill out front with a small gap back to the chasing pack.

Oskar Levin from Sweden

Dustin broke away and joined the front runners and started to work his way up to Tom. Tom felt the pressure and went tight over the double after the sweeper - getting a little out of shape as Dustin took advantage and drew alongside on the outside. As Tom got going again the pair collided and Dustin was over onto his roof.

Tom goes inside - too inside. Dustin goes wide.

Tom and Dustin collide - Dustin suffers

Neumann

Lee was extending his lead and Jorn didn't have an answer for it, and the pair started to drift apart out front. The battle for third was the only thing worth watching now as Dustin was on a mission and putting in the fastest laps of the race on his way back to the rear of Tom's Schumacher.

Tom was holding 3rd and jumping well.....

Tom fans everywhere were very pleased

Over the last lap - again, with the help of Scotty on the mic - the battle intensified and Dustin rapidly closed the remaining gap. The final corner and Dustin pushed his 22 inside and it was like a replay of the earlier incident - this time Tom was on his roof as Dustin came to a stop inches from the finish line to allow tom the 3rd place finish.

2WD = DONE!

After the third leg of the 2WD mains had completed, the trophy ceremony took place on the track. All the winners of the finals win trophies and Thaisa Van den Bossche kindly donated her fine form to the duties of impromtu trophy girl.

Before 4WD finals there was 45 minutes of open practice.

I sometimes disturb myself

Truhe does some online chatting

4WD A Final Leg One
Jorn lead away with Hupo tucked in behind - the Durango duo stormed off with Lee Martin just behind. Lee made an error early and dropped back - allowing Tom Cockerill through for third. The leading pair pulled away and Tom was left to deal with an increasingly close Mike Truhe.

Tom clipped a pipe and Truhe was through. Tom was now in a TLR sandwich with the Losi XXX4's of Truhe in front and Miguel Matias right behind. Truhe got up on two wheels in the centre of the track and couldn't rescue it - Tom was back through along with Miguel behind.

Out front there was nothing to report - Jorn and Hupo had a huge lead out front. Hupo made an error and dropped back a little but was in no danger of losing his position. Miguel and Tom meanwhile were making an interesting race for third and Miguel was pressing hard - it showed and Tom went a little wide just before the timing loop. Miguel took advantage and made the pass but Tom came back and the pair clashed wheels which saw Tom go over.

It finished in that order - with Jorn way out front, Hupo second and Miguel Matias third.

4WD A Final Leg Two
Jorn, Hupo and Lee Martin broke away quickly from the rest. Lee had changed the setup and it was obviously working out for him, he was suffering from a lack off steering but a swift ackermann and rear suspension alteration was working well. Lee was pushing Hupo hard for second whilst Jorn was able to pull a small lead out.

4WD A Final Leg Three
Jorn sat out the final leg - he'd already won and it would now see Hupo on the top spot of the grid. I was busy getting my camera ready and missed the move - but Lee got past pretty quickly and pushing hard to make the place back Hupo made a mistake on the small double after the sweeper which saw Tom Cockerill also sail through for second as Hupo now dropped to third.

By now I was scrabbling round like an unprofessional idiot with my video camera - trying to get last minute video as well as photos, and not really getting much of either.

Hupo chased Tom Cockerill and closed in - Hupo somehow got past as I fiddled with cameras - and was back to second. That's the way it ended with Lee Martin, Hupo and Tom out front.

The 4wd short course trucks were the last races and the A final saw some great battles - though the class of the field was definitely the Team Durango pair of Hupo and Jorn, who raced close in all three mains. Definitely a fun class to race and I'm sorry I couldn't cover more of the racing as the schedule was too intense.

Hupo and Jorn battled like warriors

Hupo won - he loved it!

The Short Course classes brought the biggest laughs from the drivers

Hupo won the opening leg, Jorn came back in the second and then Hupo took the third for the overall win with Jorn ending second and Truhe third.

Thanks to the EOS organisers, redrc for helping me get some stuff uploaded, chap on race control, Uwe and Scotty for being very welcoming, all the belgian warriors and swedes. Thanks also to rcdomination.com and dboots.com for really making it possible to attend the race.

Photo gallery coming soon.
