darn its hard to see :( Hope it is a new buggy.. it seems to be using the bj4we shell but it doesnt look like a bj4we to me.
that tamiya is mad looking, the shell I mean..
jimmy

The more I look at it the more I think its a modified bj4, different shocks etc, but basically a bj4. probably wrong though ! :)
The tamiya looks cool as well, darn them and their little photos.
The warm up looks fun, I really wish I was going to the worlds :(

found another photo which looks identical to the two hotbodies buggies above

looks like a bj4we shell, but definately something else. what is it ? is it a BX ?

I wonder if that is the hotbodies shell ?? its a bj4we shell but remoulded by the looks of it, since the scoops are angled back and slightly larger maybe. its also setup for mounting on the yokomo BX (or hotbodies car/ same thing)
The HB car looks to have the same configuration as the Yokomo BX and the Tamiys, hinting at equal length belts, mid-motor design, kinda cool to be honest.
And if that Tamiya has done well, might even see it go into production, I best get saving.

I hope it is a new HB buggy and not just a BX with a couple of different bits on to make it look like their sponsors car.
if it is a HB car, then it will be all their parts Jim, just pinched the layout from elsewhere, lol.

lol, I think you jumped in a bit quick there carl. you can see the latest tamiya prototype at the top of this page, and it looks nothing like the "HB" cars at all.
I have to wonder why Hotbodies would be running a prototype tamiya ? lol :p
Thats like Masami helping to develop the BJ4we.
The BJ4we-hybrid shell like the HB guys are running in this thread is setup for running on the BX or pretty much identical car, the tamiya has 2 body posts at the front, the BX has one in the centre.
Reading a crap translation of the text, the white shell (bj4we style) was given out to BX drivers at the pre-worlds race. Goodness knows what that means. reading even more crap translation, it makes reference to the HotBodies car using pro4 gearboxes and bj4 parts.

I can remember in a thread a while ago Jason @ Jconcepts confirmed that he had supplied Tamiya with a load of BJ4WE parts :)
Would be nice to see the HB car up close, i hope they try something a little different to the standard layouts.
jimmy

Hope so.. I certainly do hope both these buggys make it to production.
Here is a link to a couple of threads with photos from the pre-worlds in japan http://www.rcmx.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=1866 - you have to dig a little to get anywhere.
There is a photo of a 2wd kyosho on there, but its hard to tell wether its a home-brew update for the Kyosho Ultima TypeR, or an official Kyosho development car.

good find on the new BX shell kentech, I dont understand why its a modified BJ4we though ? !? ! did they think we would not notice ? :p
I see they have some mr4-bx stickers now too!! does that mean no one will want jimmy ones any longer ? haha

at least it looks better than the old one, i hated it
wonder if it will the bj4
jimmy
12-09-2006, 04:38 PM
I'd have thought so, though the hump on the left is a bit misplaced for the bj4.
I guess this is the same shell seen on the HB buggys, so I hope that doesn't mean the HB's are BX's, everywhere Ive seen results etc its described the cars as HB's, have to wait and see some photies leak out I guess.
I should start a "send jimmy to the worlds" fund, I'll get the photies!:jimmeh

if u look real close it does look like they might be bx's as u cant see a diff casing just a plastic flat cover, but they seem to have bj4 front shockmounts

The photo I put in with the yellow bj4style body IS a BX, but now I look again at the first photo in this thread, things become a bit clearer. The HB buggys dont have a clear cover like you mention, they have a curved black gearbox.
Could be a crappy disguise! blue peter style.. or could actually be their own car, possibly cobbled together from their own and others bits.

Maybe Jconcepts are doing the Shells ?
jimmy
12-09-2006, 05:49 PM
Could be.. I'd imagined they had just nicked it for a quick prototype shell, nothing wrong with that. But it seems to be a new Bx shell. I dont know if they changed the roof line at all, or maybe its those big scoops, but I think it looks nicer than the bj4 shell.

HPI actualy made a prototype 4wd off rd car a good few years back. 5-6 years ago at a guess. Jamie Booth did a lot of work on it i think when he worked at Mirage.
If they are going the shaft route they onviously already have the Pro 4 stuff to base it around. If they go belts, they have the cyclone diffs and parts if tey so wish.
They would likely pick the transmission and build it themselves then take suspension from other cars. This was how they did the Pro 4 ages back. Initially it just looked like a carbon twin deck TC£ - cos that's what it was!!!!
Jimbo
12-09-2006, 10:27 PM
It doesn't need that scoop in the roof though, the motor is in front of the top of the roof and the batteries are way down low...
Cosmetics..pft..
Loving all the new cars though..
Looks like the HB could be shaft drive with the two piece front gearbox, or it could be a shield, the front tower looks way flimsy and not like anything else, I reckon it's a new car altogether..
jimmy
12-09-2006, 10:52 PM
I think this will make it much clearer:
While arranging the gear box of PRO4 constitute on front and back, from before with battery constitution, holding down trend from in the motor and rear, it was impressive to become the secure making. Presently it seemed that uses those of BJ4 provisionally concerning the underside. Because both gap running the whole distance characteristic and cornering efficiency it seems that is high level, selling this way, it is appealing rank, but concerning sale concerning details still it was undecided thing.
hahaha :p

what is it with these guys and small pics, its not like they're using crappy cameras :-(
wonder if that tamiya shell will fit the BJ looks quite interesting..
jimmy
13-09-2006, 09:58 AM
from the looks of it, this is more like the Associated B3X than the B4, it definately looks like just an update to the TypeR Ultima. Should be a decent car though.
I'm with you craig, I can't understand what is with all these tiny images!!!! we want detail!
that kyosho 2wd looks like a more simple b4:confused: maybe they copied!!!!!

I've just put a news article on the HB Europe site about the upcoming 4WD buggy: http://www.hbeurope.com/news/en/2006100301.html
It's due in the spring of 2007 :)
jimmy
03-10-2006, 02:08 PM
Thanks for the news Frank
Is there anything else you can tell us about he buggy ? I realise its a prototype still, but are the any firm choices such as drivetrain type, cell layout etc ? ?
Will there be a UK team ? (skelding ??) :)
Frank McKinney
03-10-2006, 02:20 PM
All we've seen so far are the body-on shots, so no word on the layout, etc. I think it could go either way, between shaft (Pro 4) and mimicing the current belt layouts. Not sure about a UK team but it is something we'll have to consider :)

Well I can't wait to see some more, its great that some of the bigger names are getting involved in 10th off road, with HB/HPi and Tamiya both now due to release buggys before the worlds next year.
Heres hoping a 2wd is on the drawing board also! :)
If you have any more info to share, feel free anytime ;)

Heres hoping a 2wd is on the drawing board also! :)
Same here :D The RC world needs more than 3.5 2WD kits (AE, Losi, Schu, X6 counts as a half ;))
If you have any more info to share, feel free anytime ;)
Definitely!
2.5 kits, can't realy count the Schumacher in on this anymore, lol.
Definately would be fun, another big name in the 2wd market.

Reading another forum, Adam will have this car before Hotbodies have said. Nice for us that will be racing at Batley indoors.
Well, there first sort of win was wuth Masami Hirosaka in 1987, he was using their UNO mtotors, and that was his first world championship.
Their first chassis win was with the hot bodies cyclone a few weeks ago :-D

Hehe, that picture made me remember preparing all the cars for the Nurnberg show... Can't believe it's been 5 years already!
You going to Nurnberg Adam? I'll stop by and check out the buggy. Any other interesting news in the HPI/HB booth? ;)
Hi Kenny,
Yup almost 5 years since you left HPI.... I still have your 'prototype' GTi....
I will be at Nuremburg this year as always.. some cool stuff on the HPI/HB stand this year and a new stand to boot. Looks very swish...
Has the fuel proofing smell gone yet

Adam.
Can't wait to see the new HPI buggy. I always felt that HPI stuff was sort of in the 'toy' domain, not really for racing ! Not any more though, I recently bought a brand new Moore Speed Cyclone, and the build quality is fantastic, I hope the new buggy is as good.
My sole gripe with the cyclone is the complete lack of setup advice offered with the kit, bizzare for such a top quality item. I'd at least supply some kind of info with the buggy. I've being racing on and off for ages and setup still baffles me, the stuff Xray supply with their Tourers is superb.
Anyhow, if this isn't plastic fantastic, then i'll be seriously considering one simply on my experience of my first HPI kit !

Ignore him Adam, I love plastic! apparently HPI is now the more 'toy' brand, and HB the racing brand.
I have to confess, outside the hobby if you mention "hot bodies" you're gonna get some funny looks. :eh?:
I tried searching it on Google once too.
Oh boy, it didn't bring up the HB website :D:D

I would guess anodised black but thats just a guess. The car doesn't appear to have a name yet - or at least its not been revealed. Neither has the shell (and I'm pretty sure there is one). Perhaps the design / materials might still change yet..
Or indeed they might release a 'S' version, with more plastic parts - that would be great to have two versions.

shame on HB...
Get a car with at least SOME originality... its just a rebadged BJ4WE...
This is me shaking my head in embarrassment for HB
If its a BJ4WE you want, buy one.. They look better, they are original and the guys who make them are awesome and the after sales support AND tech support is the best..
myk505
09-02-2007, 06:36 AM
do you camplain about many of the touring cars that are made? the xray looks similar to a HB cyclone which also looks similar to a 415MSX which looks similar to the new associated to come out which looks similar to the yokomo BD which happens to look similar to the Mi2 which looks similar to a corrally. what about the kyosho belt drive which is similar to the TA05???
is it bad that the BJ4 is a good car and that layout is good? just like there are minor differences with all those touring cars, there a minor differences with the D4, whether it be the colours, topdeck shape, diffs etc. it also looks as if the motor is placed a little further back.
i dont really know why all these people are complaining about it looking similar to the BJ4, whats so bad about it?
FifteenthNeo
09-02-2007, 08:23 AM

With all due respect to JConcepts who indeed make a great buggy and yourself (im not flaming, just airing an opinion ;)), where in your statement do you mention how well the BJ4WE drives. Look at the real world where we have the Jaguar X type. This apitamy of british engineering is using a Ford Mondeo chassis (not that there's anything wrong with the Mondeo)
And look at the B4 and XXX CR both 2WD buggies that, although not identical, have very similar layouts.
If its a good design, why not make a variation of it. Afterall, when a D4 crosses the finish line infront of a BJ4WE, which it obviously will at some point given the law of averages, are you gonna say the BJ4WE has had its day.
Just my 10 penneth's worth. :p
Nick Goodall
09-02-2007, 10:47 AM
It's the same with F1 - To the untrained average person the entire grid of F1 cars probably looks identical but with different colours, yet one will be 3-5 seconds a lap faster then another, so tiny differences = big differences on track.
You could also argue that the Cat 3000 was the first with this layout, and actually the Losi XX4 was the first 4wd competitive car to have a motor anywhere near the front of the car, this was a massive difference to previous 4wd off road cars but is almost the norm now!
Things change and improve all the time as the years go by, it's called Evolution ;)
We're at the stage where these cars are all so good now, it's only small changes that are being made to gain every last 1/10th of a second. If you look at for instance the first Losi JRX, then the XX, XXCR, then the XXX, BK2, CR - They're fundamentally the same "design / layout" but with Geometry and slight weight distribution changes over the years hence Evolving into the current XXXCR that people are running today.

nicks spot on....
even moving the cells mm's in different places will massively alter the cars handle. i feel. so theres no end to the amount of stuff they can do. but it will also 'look' like a BJ4 with that layout, but may not go like one....i.e, Academy??

I constantly see the argument that this layout requires the buggy to look similar....but why do the parts appear almost identical. The front arms, caster blocks, c-hubs, center slipper assembly, etc all seem to be blatant copies, not Hot Bodies spin on this particular layout.
Ron Burgundy
12-02-2007, 03:54 AM
What Andy has said above is my exact point.....
It is a blatant rip off of the BJ4WE...
Evolution YES, copying the best car on the track at the moment and calling it an "EXCLUSIVE" I say NO!!!!!!
Its a shame and to be honest, is just a little bit wrong...
JConcepts have done the right thing and will continue to do so, so in a way Jason and Brad should be flattered that a company with the resources of HotBodies should basically take the blue prints and put their name on it...
Thats looking at it in a "glass half full" kinda way!
I dont think in a million years could HB back up there product the way JC do...:)
Andy Moore
12-02-2007, 06:41 AM
Hot Bodies, Tamiya, and Yokomo all used BJ parts in their prototypes and use very similar looking production parts. Its true that some use them to a higher extent than others though. Two companies actually ordered parts through us.....

Hpi are a big company and can certainly get more drivers into 4WD and off road electric in general with this car. There is talk of the 'other' andy moore giving this car a race this year, which might turn some other touring car drivers onto this class of racing - good for everyone!:)

Please remind me where all this lot came from on the Original BJ4:
Castor Blocks & Knuckles (Losi).
Sipper: B4.
Front and Rear Wishbones: B4.
Drivetrain: TC3.
Hairs could be split all day on which came first, the chicken or the egg.

Like you said, hairs could be split all day. I'm not going to dwell on the subject, but I want to point out the inaccuracies contained in your post:
Caster Blocks - JConcepts (they're not just Losi pieces made from aluminum, the dimensions are different)
Knuckles - Losi (correct)
Slipper - JConcepts (the design was similar to the B3 slipper, but the only common part was the center bushing)
Wishbones - B4 (correct)
Drivetrain - Modified TC3 (slipper input shaft, one-way drive cup, NTC3 outdrives, and machined housings)
With that said, it's not most important point. The original BJ4 was designed to use as many Associated parts as possible. The whole idea was to make an Associated based 4WD off-road car, because they don't make one themselves. We also buy those parts from Associated to package in our kits, so Associated gets recognition and profits from us using their parts. We didn't just copy and existing car, add some subtle differences, and put our name on it.

Nice car, although the cheap looking plastic battery retainers ruin the CF look. Shame. Would it be that expensive to use CF for these parts like on the BJ4, TRF501, ...
Another thing : given my recent experiences with HPI cars, I would choose the BJ4 over this anytime if I wanted a shaft driven 4wd. It's branded Hotbodies, but they are essentially the same company as HPI and the drivetrain is taken from the HPI Pro4. I've seen some serious quality, design and reliability issues with recent HPI cars (the HPI Baja and MT2 come to mind).

The gearboxes have been re-designed specifically for the Off-Road car.
Battery Retainers: Cheap looking, but ultimately stong.. C/F... Yes... possible.
price increase to the end user.....definate......performance advantage... negligable.

Correct. They have moulded retainers holding the cells firmly in place, whether you have the cells in the forward or back position.

I love the fact that nobody's really seen one in the flesh, let alone going round a track yet seem to pick holes in the weirdest / smallest things they can think of?? Is there some sort of conspiracy or something :D

:D Really? Yes i know that, it's not Adam i'm talking about - it's the people that seem set on slagging the car before even seeing one in the flesh let alone out on track.

I know. Fun ain't it, how people can judge a book by it's cover..?:D
Well. If anyone is interested. My shell has been finished by the wonderful Telsshells. Highly Recommened... Photos tomorrow....
This weekend I'll be going to Coventry to run it (weather permitting), then Batley / Tiverton on the 4th.
Worksop on the 18th.
and plenty of test days in between.

Hey, I'm not trying to slash the new car and I'm sure the plastic battery straps work fine. I'm just pointing out that it looks out of place on an completely CF car. It's more of a BLING thing ;)
About design flaws and poor part quality of HPI : I'm still getting over my MT2 experience (a complete disaster in terms of track reliability, I'm very happy it's sold). I also have a Baja 5b and my opinion remains that it shows some serious design flaws like unacceptable wheel rub, easely torn tyres, desintegrating tyre inserts, bending shock shafts, ... but I'm happy to see that HPI is slowly addressing those issues.

Adam let me have a sneaky preview of one last night.
It looks a ver imperssive car indeed and doesn't look that 'cheap' in the flesh. I painted a shell for it but it wasn't the finished design so I aint sayin nowt!;) But the Proto look swish! some very nice ideas on the shell and the car too.
I'm not saying too much cos I don't want to let owt out but there are still other things being looked at for the productions version, I think.

Love the shark/Ferrari style Gills at the back - very nice!
looks nice, my only concern is the roof line looks BJ4WE(ish) and people will be more convinced it is a clone, otherwise, nice shell.

Hi
Is there a good amount of space under that body for Brushless and Lipos?
What size servo LxBXH?
Does the Rx need to be a Mini size?
Thanks Jeff

Plenty of room for Brushless and Lipo (Split Pack).
I have the Nosram ISTC which is about as bis as you'll get..
Standard size radio gear all fits.... Just my radio has the micro rec and halfheight servo.

As for the electrics.
There's plenty of room on the motor side for the Rec... I was thinking about mounting mine there.....
Believe me there's plenty of room...
I had a touring car moment and tried to make it all fit on one side....
