Like you I have different tastes depending on the time of year etc.

During the summer I'm normally on lager, something like Carling or Fosters.

During the winter I tend to go towards bitter, normally Brains SA as my local does a mean pint of it!

Just for comedy value, I do like the odd Bishops Finger too :woot:

Depends on the time of year for me too. October to Christmas I hardly drink, and New Year til May/June I don't drink - mainly because I hate the cold weather so use the time to save money for the summer.

So when I do drink, Merry Down is my favourite Cider - the strong stuff from the supermarket. If im chillin in the sun topping up my sun-stroke, then Corona without Lime. If im just about bloated then anything Vodka based - WKD, with Redbull, Coke, lemonade.

Or if im sat at home then a Hock, or a descent Brandy (straight), or sometimes a Whiskey (anything but JD) with just ice.

Mampoer

The Americans call it 'moonshine', to the warm-blooded Irish it is 'Poteen' and the Swiss call it 'Kirsch'. In South Africa, it is 'Witblits' in the Cape and to Transvalers it is just 'Mampoer'. Mampoer and the variety of names given to it are the names of strong, homemade distilled brandy made from fruit.

Mampoer is uniquely South African. Its legend is so entangled in the South African folklore legends that it is difficult to distinguish between facts and fables.

What makes Mampoer so unique is the fact that it is distilled on the farm according to handpicked recipes and very special processes. The secrets of distilling this potent ‘brandy’ are carried over from generation to generation and this adds to the mystery that surrounds it.

It is not certain where the name ‘mampoer’ originated. Many stories and anecdotes which are being told and which are still in circulation as well as the closely guarded secret of the refined recipes, contribute to the fascination of the mampoer legend.

It is alleged that mampoer was named after Mampuru, a Pedi Chief who instigated the murder of his half-brother Sekoekoenie. It is alleged that, General Joubert's men probably obtained liquor from Mampuru and Mapog. It is believed that this liquor was distilled from Maroelas, which was plentiful in the area.

The test to determine quality of mampoer is very simple. Pour a small quantity on a flat surface and light it. If it all burns off with a clear blue flame, it is unadulterated and full strength. This is why Mampoer is sometimes also called 'fire water' - it causes the first-time drinker to catch his breath with his first sip.

A simple recipe for making mampoer: Take your drums of ripe yellow peaches (don't worry about any worms), mash them up and leave them for 14 days. The fruit ferments and gives off a lot of gas. When the bubbles subside, the mash is ready to distil. Don't leave the mash too long or it will go sour and you'll end up with peach vinegar.

Heat the mash in the still to just under boiling point. The alcohol boils off before the water and is trapped by a condensation pipe. The condensate is collected in a bucket and, for really top quality mampoer, it may be redistilled. The residue of the distillation process (known to whisky distillers as the feints) makes an excellent liniment and mosquito repellent.

The farmers in the Marico district (North West Province) where mampoer distilling is part of everyday life, have to sell their mampoer discreetly - mampoer distilling for retail sale is still illegal. This goes back to 1924 when the government passed a law giving KWV a monopoly on brandy production.

All stills had to be marked and registered with Customs and Excise, and detailed records kept as to the amount and strength of any liquor produced. Farmers were allowed to produce liquor only from fruit grown on their land. Portable stills were outlawed: they had to have a minimum capacity of 680 litres and had to be built on a cement or brick foundation.

Recently exemption was however given to agricultural museums and colleges to distil brandy, and two institutions have taken up the offer. In the Cape, the Kleinplasie farm museum in Worcester makes Witblits and in the Transvaal, the Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum, near Pretoria, distils mampoer.

A Mampoer tour from the town of Zeerust also takes tourists from farm to farm, where they can sample the home distilled, clear spirit or spend a night to enjoy the Groot Marico hospitality.

Mampoer has long ago become part of South Africa’s cultural heritage. To the people who distil and drink 'mampoer', it has become a way of life.

My local pub has a brewery out the back. Station House Bitter, gorgeous! Green King IPA is nice. Adnams - now there's a quality beer. Murphys is good, and then Guiness of course. Can't beat a good lager, all the German ones particularly Dinkel Acker, and I love those little French bottled beers mmmm... How about the original Budweiser, the Czeck one? I had really nice Polish lager the other day as well. Then the Dutch and the Belgians know a thing or two about beer, I used to love Orangeboom, but don't see it much anymore. The Aussie lagers are cracking on a summers day, and the South Africans do a few nice ones too....Mmmm..

Sod it - I'm off out for last orders.

Lately it has been Amberbock for me. I did try this Southern Pecan Ale made by a micro brewery somewhere in Mississippi and it was mouthwatering. I will have to research it some. Also, the Irish Red I get when I go to the local Maguire's Pub is very good also.

Dont really drink beer but partial to Asahi or Asahi Black.

Prefer Cider, good bit of Henneys Frome Valley is my fav at the mo, used to really like that Red K one in bottles but they ruined it putting it in cans, tastes totally different. Gone off Bulmers/magners. Tescos vintage oak one is a nice new discovery. Aspinall Dry for when i want something stronger.

Spirits - Smirnoff Black/Blue (maybe with a little lime and soda), Sake.

Banned From - Rum - evil things happen when on rum...

I've just remembered - I have 1/4 of a bottle of your sloe-gin still left - I'm gonna drink it NOW.

Worlds worst beer must be John Smiths Extra Smooth. That crap is just made in a big factory then flavoured to taste vagely like beer should.

For me the best is anything made in a brewery, not a factory.

I liked...

In the USA, I liked Leinenkugel but only found 2 cases of it.

Kronen...somethingsomething in Khon Kaen (had it at the Sofitel), Thailand is very good.

In Australia, mostly Victoria Bitter.

In NZ, Rheineck, Speights Old Dark 5 malt ale, Monteith's Celtic Red all get my approval.

In Malaysia, I avoid all the big local breweries but did have one imported German beer called Weihenstepen that was great.

there is some great beer in Sweden - i enjoyed the carlsberg sort guld ('black gold') but it only seems to be available in the nordic coutries - that said there are also lots of local ales, though i found quite a few of them to be a bit crap, but you can't beat dear old blighty for sheer variety. most from Skinners or St austell brewery is great (cornwall) like tribute or heligan honey.

Cobra's are good, especially draught. Even better with a ring sting enducing curry.

But for drinking with a DVD a bottle of wine is nice, red or white, fizzy or flat. mmmmmmmh. refreshing.

There isn't quite the choice in beers in Northern Ireland you'd get elsewhere in the UK - Guiness is (rightly) all-conquering in this land.

All time favourite: Warsteiner (first discovered in Argentina), can be found in places in the UK.
New Zealand: Monteith's Black
Ethiopia: Dashen or Harer (it amuses me that one of the finest breweries in East Africa is situated in the 4th holiest Muslim city)
Ireland: Hard to beat a Guiness, preferably Extra Cold.

Samuel Smiths Imperial stout is one of my all time favourites:thumbsup:, I do like a good dark but slightly sweet stout;)
If anyone likes that sort of thing, I can highly reccommend Zywiec Porter, However its only made once or twice yearly and I have never seen it outside of Poland:(

Drinking a Guinness while posting this.

The majority of Bitters I tried while in the UK were great. Tetley's seemed to be in most pubs and I enjoyed it every chance I got. Ever heard a yank ask the barmaid for a bitter? You probably got a laugh=)

Cider, the good stuff is hard to get over here, I have 2 cans of Strongbow in my fridge. I love the stuff!

Has to be a nice cold pint of cider, something like magners or bulmers, nicest ever was strongbow smooth but they stopped doing it. had some scrumpy once called henry's rocket fuel, that was good stuff, and before anyone who knows me says anything...yes i used to love diamond white and K cider and drink way too much of it. second to cider has to be some of my home made wine, on amount of sugar used in fermentation, last years blackberry should be around 17% and its ready to drink......

Cant be..al UKs sober or :D...How eva, for a few weeks i had the chance to test Swedens Strongest and most expensive (to buy in store) Sigtuna Ace of spades

Took this text form the www.beersweden.se (http://www.beersweden.se)

Word just in is that Sweden’s strongest ever beer, Ace of Spades (http://www.beersweden.se/archives/4955)from Sigtuna Brygghus, will go on sale at the Swedish monopoly on November 15th.
At 18.5% ABV this imperial stout is not only the strongest ever beer brewed in Sweden, it will also be the most expensive too, with just 500 bottles hitting the shelves of the three vinkällarbutiker (http://www.systembolaget.se/Applikationer/Knappar/OmSystembolaget/VaraButiker/sbmedvinkallare.htm) in Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenburg for the asking price of 179 SEK for each 330ml bottle.
So if you want to experience Ace of Spades you’ll have to play your cards right (Ed: sorry!) and make sure you place your order at the stroke of 10am on the 15th. Good luck!

Most of the regular "drinker" think this one only test Boooz..but nope, not at all...just kaziljons of taste!!
