My own road, pavement AND path, tis quite amazing. But when you're going one way, and an angry van driver is coming the other it isnt a good situation to be in!

19-01-2007, 06:14 PM
you run a one way in it ?
diff or layshaft ?
PaulRotheram
19-01-2007, 06:23 PM
currently a one way, however this is causing abit of a problem as it is Fwd, breaking is abit contraversial as to wether i stop or not.
I'm thinking of getting some Ti screws though, to loose abit of weight, and then might need to upgrade to MIP driveshafts to take the power of the mighty 1.2 beast.
What tyres are best, any information on inserts also? Do i need a big spoiler to give my self abit more rear end grip through the corner, or is the standard opened boot enough?
any help would be much appreciated!

Ok, I'd highly recommend you replace the exhaust with a baked bean can (catering pack size), cut 4 coils off each spring, replace the std wheels with those off an arctic lorry (complete with spinning trims), remove the rear seats to allow exta room for the obligatory 28 speakers, fit ultra high intensity blue LEDs to the washer jets, prepare all glass with blackboard paint (unless you can find something darker), and finally lavishly coat in tango orange paint.
It wont technically make you go any faster, but it will give us all something to uncontrollably giggle at :D

Silly me , I forgot to say you must also add this. (I suspect attempting mini roundabouts in Liverpool town centre, at any thing over 9 mph without it would most likely result in a guaranteed near fatal accident, Richard Hammond style)

20-01-2007, 05:18 PM
Its your car? Why did you buy a four door punto (Thats front wheel drive, wings are there to push the drive wheels down, not try to lift them.) that had a daft wing on it? Surely your not tasteless enough to have fitted it?:D
(As I don't know you I should point out the above's a tongue in cheek joke and not intented as an insult to you or anybody else sad enough to do that to a car - damn, I did it again:D .)

Thanks for the tips on set up, but the car got valeted today, and it's buggered :( im seriously 110% gutted. Apparently the cylinder head has gone, he gave me a quote on the job to do it but reccomended against it as further problems will occur.
not got much else to say, not in the best of ways!

you just cant buy class...
paul, dont know how much you been quoted but if it is loads try a few breakers to see if they have any puntos in that have had a rear end shunt...if engine is ok just swap the engines over. just as a guide there is a punto on autotrader this week with low miles engine and recent cambelt change for £475 so one that is in the breakers should be loads cheaper.
PaulRotheram
20-01-2007, 07:32 PM
£150 for the job, but told that itl fix the problem for a short while, but problems will definatly reoccur.
looks like i might not be racing for a while either now, i'm out of pocket and having troubles sourcing funds for components i need.

20-01-2007, 08:10 PM
Paul whats the symptoms?
if your at York find me , im 24+ years in motor trade, if its yellow sludge in the oil filler cap/breathers its no necessary the head, does it loose water, pressure the cooling system or over heat?
he could be after a quick buck!
Oscar
20-01-2007, 08:25 PM
Yep, Mark could be correct. £150 sounds a little cheap for a head job, Even if it was only the gasket, theres a few hours labour plus the parts and to be 100% a skim is often required. Even with "student discount";) I would have expected a higher price.
PaulRotheram
20-01-2007, 08:34 PM
unfortuantly not mark, im reet over here in scouse land. The oil cap had some sludge in it when we first bought it, i wiped it off and only had a lil come back since, but been told on a fiat forum its normal when doing low mileage journeys.
I got stuck in traffic yesterday and the temp guage nearly red lined, i pulled over and the water was literally boiling.
I think i want a second opinion, i just need abit of time to think it over, it all came as a rush today, both me and me dad are gutted.
a few guys on the fiat forum said to get it skimmed, new bolts etc and it should be fine.
you on msn or sumet mark?
PaulRotheram
20-01-2007, 09:39 PM
spoke to a neighbour, he works in an auto car shop and has said he will price up the parts required, and will check for people who can skim the head.
Just hoping somthing can be done tbh!

make sure fan is working. is it ok if your moving and not stood?
PaulRotheram
21-01-2007, 05:30 PM
only overheats in traffic yes, when moving the temp comes down to about half way.
Fan wasnt working when i pulled over, but the valeter got it going yesterday after fiddling with some wiring.. not sure if it is working now as ive not turned the car over!
still has the sludge under oil cap, and white smoke out the rear.
mark christopher
21-01-2007, 09:29 PM
when does it white smoke?
does the heater go cold at all?
take water header cap off from cols and start engine, does it bubble out?
msn is my name seperated by k_C 19 on the end then hotmail.com
Could be a lot of things, water pump, fan switch on the cooling system, head gasket, loads. If you know someone in the trade, there is a test they can do on the coolant that will tell you if the head gasket is gone.

Dude you say this guy is a valeter (sp)!!!!
Get someone who know's what they are doing to look at it.:eh?:

the joys of motoring I guess.
The only way to find out, find a freind who is a decent mechanic and does work on the side, or find a good mechanic, or LEARN.

Hey Paul, real sorry to hear about your new car trouble, it does sound a lot like what I've just been through with my golf. Carry plenty of water in the car if you go anywhere and stop if it gets silly hot. Then wait for it to cool before adding more water... hope you get it sorted without too much wallet pain.
mark christopher

doubt water pump as its ok when moving
two symptoms for a head gasket, pressure in water header tank, cylinder to water gasket blown. this will pressure system instant or blow water out of header tank wen engine cold with cap off. over heat any time not just stood still and poss lose heater as the air is system will stop water circulating.
cylinder to oil way, water in oil emusilified oil ( custard looks) though this can be found in many normal breather systems from condensation and some is aceptable
fan not working will cause over heat in slow/stationary traffic, no air flow over the rad, it you drive and get air flow and all drops to norm head gasket should be ok.
cooling system works under aprox 15 psi this stops it boiling at 100 deg c (like a pressure cooker) to take the top off header when hot is dangerous as it will allow the tank to vent to atmospher and the water to boil and exit like a gueezer (sp)
find a decent garage or is any of your familly in the rac (caqll em out) etc you need a non bias inspection
it could just be a simple fact the fan has not come in and the engine has got hot, this does not nesaseraly mean the head gasket has gone, but please also be aware it its a posisbility
re: fan, just start her up, let the engine warm up, when the temp starts going up, if the fan never kicks in, then you need to check that, see whether the fan switch (is it in the rad on the Punto?) will be trying to put 12V out to the fan, if it isn't, then it is the switch, if it is, you need to check that the fan works. You can do that at home.
Otherwise, Marks suggestion, grab someone with a decent RAC/AA breakdown membership out for a drive, then pull over, phone them and tell them you have over-heated.

Car is fixededed, New gasket kit put on, and the old one has a nice crack allowing water in to the piston. Fitted a new cambelt, and also changed the oil, water and fitted a new oil filter.
Fan also works. Apparently the water wasnt getting up the right level due to the gasket; so the fan sensor wasnt indicating it was required. Car runs nicely under half way temperate which is the 'normal' Car is ace!!
Job done in under 2 hours, just gotta keep it topped up and all should be well.
mark christopher
04-02-2007, 06:54 PM
when you say keep it topped up is it actually loosing any water?
PaulRotheram
04-02-2007, 06:59 PM
not loosing any water no, but have been told it'l go around the system and water will decrease abit over the next day or two. Then check it once a week like every car owner should..
That will be the air bleeding out.
What the bet, thats why you got the car cheap then Paul, cause it had 'issues' but at least it is fixed now.
mark christopher
04-02-2007, 07:15 PM
yup but make sure u check it each time cold, and when hot it will be diff level.
pleased you got it sorted
PaulRotheram
04-02-2007, 07:24 PM
yep, when we opened it up there was a sealent on the gasket where they had tried to cover the fact it had blown!
Cleaned all that crap off, and put it back together with new parts.. Lovin the car now.

Ahh now this one is easy, I know when my water needs topping up as the windscreen goes all streaky.
Took bloOple to the breakers yard today and some nice man checked his oil level for me, it's 1/5th of what it should be.
