View Full Version : National/Supported Series for trucks??

Hey up,
been giving a bit of thought to a national series for trucks (as I have one and really want to race it!!). It also reminds me of the national series that was very successful around 10 years ago or so, and why they aren't so popular over here as in the US?
Was thinking of possibly a manufacturer/distributor series involving a 5 or 6 meeting series over the winter??
It could include the new SC10 trucks (on kit tyres only) with limited horsepower/motors (eg 13.5 brushless), also a handout motor (which could be purchased if required as part of the meeting entry fee, but at a slightly reduced cost from normal from a distributor)
I was also thinking that the more 'normal' trucks (t4/xxxt-cr/x60) running to limited a motor limit (e.g. 6.5t brushless), but tyres would be controlled (one set per meeting).
I was also thinking about possibly using the PDA (Pro-line Dirt Arena) as the first and last meeting of the series (if they were up for it), and having handout tyres (also included in the entry fee, again at a light discount for this track only). This is to make the racing very close (and driver skill makes up the rest!)
What does everyone think?? These are only ideas in my head at the moment, but would like to gauge some interest or someone who would want to take this idea further??
Your ideas/suggestions please...

We here at X-Factory UK would seriously consider supporting a series of some sort since we are all itching to run our X60 in some competative races as are many of our customers....

I ran my X60 on sunday for the first time and it was ACE, a few minor mods to make as jumping over fair large jumps into a head wind makes it like a parachute but other than that it was great!!!

Thanks for all the responses so far..
Not too sure where I would start with this though? I guess getting some tracks involved who might be interested in supporting the series...then go from there?
What tracks might people want to see on the calendar (winter proposed calendar)...?
Proline Dirt Arena?
Maritime?
Stotfold (outdoor)?
York (indoor)?
York (indoor)?
York have lost there indoor venue at the present moment in time.
But im pretty sure Robin hood raceway would be up for running trucks.

I also believe Ben that the start area at RHR was built so that 10 trucks can sit side by side to start a heat (if it ever gets that popular!) - and that is WIDE

How about keeping the majority in the central area, with one northern one, and one southern one?

Central to the country I was meaning! (obviously, we would try and get one 'ooop North' somewhere (and if one of you more northern lads could ask around at some of your clubs to see if they are interested, I will try and contact some of the other clubs to see if we can get some interest).
If we can get one in the more southern locations, it would benefit those in the south east (e.g. Maritime raceway).
I will contact Lee Martin (pidge) and see if he is interested at both CML Raceway, and the PDA as these would be good tracks for trucks I reckon!
More comments please, lets try and get this thing off the ground!

I don't know about hosting a national series, but I can say at Southport we have seen a healthy intrest in truck racing this year.
So far we have had at least 1 full heat on every club day and interest seems to be growing.
For those who are up for some Truck racing this season, then Southport will be hosting two trophy meetings this summer with Trucks as a supported class.
Sunday 7th June 09 - Southport Summer GP
Sat/Sun 01/02 Aug 09 - Woodvale International Rally (same weekend as Stofold Nat.)

What about including a Corr series class? SC10 and Slash etc.
markwilliamson2001

That was the intention Craig!
I was hoping that we might get some series support from someone like CML for the SC10 class, to try and help promote them a bit more in the UK...!?

Hi guys...
This sounds great, but when do you propose to run them?
CML Raceway and the Pro-Line Dirt arena would both be interested in running an event...its just finding the time for me, considering i dont have a free weekend until september the 13th.....

Hi Lee (and everyone!),
I was proposing very end of september/start October (late autumn) and throughout the winter. I was hoping to have a mix of tracks, (mainly indoor, although some all weather outdoor tracks would be good, but at the beginning and end of the series). This is where PDA came in, since we can have an outdoor surface, inside!
Here would be a rough proposal (which can be changed):
Rd1: PDA (October)
Rd2: TBA ?? (November)
Rd3: Maritime (December)
Rd4: TBA ?? (Jan)
Rd5: PDA (Feb)
Rd6: CML (March)
I was also hoping that with PDA and CML Raceway being supported by CML, we could have some sort of provided tyre (at slightly reduced cost) for those meets (probably Proline Holeshots etc, since they would work well on both PDA AND CML)

Mark,
Could one of those gaps be filled with say Worksop & the other maybe Newbury as both decent size indoor areas with big jumps
Also as previously mentioned in this thread, depending on weather, im sure Ledbury would be keen on either of the tracks..

Surely Hereford (leominster) would put on an event indoors. There tracks are ace and some of there jumps are awesome. SC10's Allready seems very popular there.

I would have thought you'd need a few classes really..... Mainly (in a sort of selfish way) that the SC10's handle so well out of the box on standard tyres i think they should all be run the same as they come with kit shock settings and everything. As soon as the become modified we may as well just be all racing T4's / Buggys as the realism and part of the fun goes out the window as it all comes down to setups, tyres and other mods which i think would be a shame really.
I think the T4's, X60's, XXXT's etc should be an open class - maybe even split the Slashs / SC10's as i gather they're pretty different..... although far more similar compared to running alongside T4's etc.
Just an idea but i would absolutely love a series where all SC10's had to be completely standard as the racing would be superb

Rather than have lots of classes you could just have a CORR class and an ST class, that'd keep it simple!:)

I'm in for a SC10 class for sure. Completely agree it needs to be kept box standard with a 10.5 or 13.5 otherwise get a T4......
Modified mine for a while and it has massive advantages so lets stay away from best set-ups and stick with fun best bumping out of the way, sorry I mean best driving hehe :D

My thoughts exactly ;-)
Only issue i can see is that the Traxxas Slash can't really then run in the same class which is a shame - maybe there's a way around it though but at least people are getting interested. It's been a long time since any sort of Scale off-road racing has been popular

Wez, i thought about this too - To be honest you could have a quick Tech check for Tyres, Motors and if they know what they're looking for the Shocks should at least have the same springs and spacers in the top - If people decide they want to start changing the oil / pistons then that's just a shame but up to them at the end of the day.
I'm sure it would become apparent if one truck was handling far better then any others - i guess it'd be one of those things we'd just have to hope people can be trusted with :)

As long as people just run the standard Tyres with the inserts they come with everything should be fine no??
I can't see why people would want to cheat as the whole point of a series like this would be the Fun element, not out and out competition - keep that for the buggy racing :)
I'm sure in a tech check they'd be able to tell if anyone's used non standard inserts (if they're different enough to make a difference anyway)

i think the tech could check all, ride hieght, droop, springs, tyres, motors, bats camber links etc reasonably quickly, as for damping, i suppose it could be done but a little more difficult.
maybe have 2 classes , box stock (boxer) and unlimited ???? just a suggestion though

Yeah i think with a series like this, people have to be trusted to a certain extent - we just have to hope that people aren't desperate enough to win that they'll do stuff like this as the whole point would be to make it Fun and even - If people cheat and win then i can only hope they wouldn't feel that great about winning and we'd all know if they had cheated ;-)
Easy way would be to swap cars for the finals haha

Yeah i see your point, but to me if people just run them as they come with standard pistons and 30wt oil it REALLY keeps it simple and cost effective.........
Changing oils, pistons, springs, shock positions, camber etc just encourages testing, practising and playing around which i just think is something that could be avoided in the SC10 class if everyone agrees to it - How much fun just chucking the thing on the track and having to drive it without thinking do i need more rear pack, does the front end need softening up etc etc...
Remember also that this could be a really good way for people to start 1/10th racing as it already seems to appeal more due to the "realism" so these Newbies won't have a clue about changing Oils, pistons and again could be put off if they feel they can't compete due to set-ups (Something that happens too often in 1/10th buggy's)...
I say keep them stock as they came :D

Not wishing to butt in (I dont own an SC10, you see), but really? Keeping camber and preload spacers as they are out the kit??
Totally agree with kit wheels, tyres, shock bodys, shells etc etc but you'll make alot more hard work for yourself by trying to limit every single thing....
That said, ive always been a fan of watching the SC10's and hope that someone organises a big event soon :) (It aint hard to organise em, I know :) )

It wouldn't really be hard to check - if you just at least request that everyone runs them as they came i think it would be something most people would be happy to do....
The cars are setup as standard to handle a certain way by Associated - Yeah i'm sure we could all make them handle like a T4 with loads of rear end - simply move Cells back, soften up the rear and it's probably done but i don't personally see the point, i think if everyone just agrees to run them as they come it makes the racing soooo much more enjoyable and even.

but thats making more work for people running it, how do you check for oil weight at track side, and doesn't matter if that was enforced, do you really believe that people wouldn't run them every chance they get to practice, remember KISS (keep It Simple Stupid) keep the things that matter to a limit. motor, battery c rating, tyres,i personally wouldn't want to race if i couldn't get the car working for ma boy, that std box setting might work for some drivers and not others, that in its self is unfair advantage.

If it's the same for everyone i don't see how anything is an unfair advantage at all - If someone's driving better then that's all there is to it??
I'm not saying you could exactly check every detail as there would have to be a large element of trust....
I just don't think the whole SC10 class would be anywhere near as good if you had people popping wheelies, leaving others chasing their tales all day for a set-up when there's a really easy way for all to just run the cars as they came and were designed to handle making it simple and fair for all - Racing is fantastic but it becomes a lot more serious and much more like normal buggy racing if everyone starts chasing set-ups etc.
That's all i'm thinking anyway :D

I think we need to tech:
Motor Limit
Weight
Body
Tires/Wheels
Ride Height (minimum limit set).
Thats it.
Tuning the car's setup should be promoted surely, but hop-ups limited to strength/reliability issues (in the case of the SC10, the diff shims would need to be allowed, as well as wheel modifications, as they can easily strip).
It should come down to driver talent, and tuning/setup. I really think that the speed of these things are limited by the low grip they have, and the power you can put down?
Chrislong
14-07-2009, 08:52 PM
Im up for some of this, but I reckon keep a CORR class and a Stadium Truck class. One day events only.
Corr racing should be stock racing, 10.5 motor limit/19t brushed stock, no changes, full contact, and be a class accessible for low budgets & big fun.
Stadium truck will become a modified class in comparison, usual rules etc.
Anyone taking it too seriously gets a random forfeit...
Seeing as the race calender is chocka-block its important the dates are spread so they clash with as little as possible - so perhaps spread them over a longer period, so some are outdoors through the winter, and some are indoors during the winter. Then 1 month off through December (chance for a big event between Xmas/New year?

Im tempted to put two packs of Lipo in, in series, not for more power but for more duration.
How about, if less than 7 heats then the racing structure is 4 rounds of qualifying (no breaks) and 3 legs for each final.
If 8 heats or more, time will be tight, 3 leg A final only.
Whats the chances of this becoming a BRCA class, or do we need it to be an existing class to start with before the BRCA will recognise it?

I think the only thing to remember is the placement of Cells in the SC10 - That is a massive factor in what makes them handle as they were supposed to (and not just like a T4) - This is probably the only other crucual element so there should be something about that included? My main reservation about the whole Set-up change thing is that we would be in danger of making it more like racing normal T4 style trucks but with SC10 body's which would be a real shame as these things should be going sideways and a real handful to drive

These trucks really rock,i bought a fairly new Slash, fitted a 10.5 brushless system and then raced it at The Nook against the 1/8 nitro guys. What a hoot,OK the very best drivers were elsewhere last weekend but there was stiil a a field of about 15 eighth drivers,i qualified 7th over all, they were so upset they demanded a 30 minute final,i hadn`t actually intended racing,so had no tools,no charger and after doing 2 heats on 1x4800 lipo had only 1 charged battery left. One of the largescale lads put my flat lipo on charge for me :D [Thanks Mr Haywood].I pitted at about 18 minutes for a fresh lipo and managed to fight my way upto 5th at the end
Best days racing in a long while :woot:
With Losi on the edge of releasing one,Kyosho could do one fairly easy from thier nitro version and HPi[HB] must[Should] be looking to produce one also?
It looks to be a fast growing fun class for both newbies and seasoned racers.
I hope it takes off big time and complements 1/10 buggys :) some proper, friendly organised racing would be superb;)

Just scanning through this thread as I have a Traxxas Slash, Someone mentioned the Slash probably wont run with SC10s, because they're different, er....they're both corr trucks, what's the issue?:eh?:
I know you hardcore boys will always go for the "race bred" trucks, hence the SC10, but what's wrong with the Slash? Especially since you all harp on about corr racing being "good fun" and "putting a smile on your face", I shouldn't have to spend £170 on a kit to get that same feeling should I, or anyone else for that matter.
Everyone likes a quality kit, but surely there's room for two.
Imagine, plum in mouth: "A traxxas? oh, we only run sc10s":p

Hey Crazy L, I agree completely - lets run them together, its CORR racing and lets not close the doors on any brands... well said.
We are trying to sort the dates out for the winter series at Proline Dirt Arena
As this is on line just waiting for 2 clubs to come back to us with there dates,
There will be a 2 day meeting, King of Dirt I beleave it will be called possibly trucks could be included in this. Or a one off meeting for trucks say winter Nats, with 2wd to back it up. Just some more thoughts in the pot will have a word with Tony, Lee, Marion (food Lady, Nice chips) see what we can come up with.
Proline tyres and I am sure we can sort the std corr type truck std type motor,
with fun as maen piont.
open truck for all other types.

Less rules the better for the CORR class please gets my vote, people tend to exclude themselves if they can`t conform with what they already have.Does it matter in a fun class? If folks want rules they should surely be racing buggys or something else.So what if a top racer turns up with a fully modded car and blitzes the field,it is no fun if you have a massive advantage so i doubt that will happen and extra kudos for those who play fair even if they don`t win.
It`s about fun.
Just my thoughts ;)

Yeh agree'd, loosely.
Tires and motor rule/recommendation but id say a "loose" rule. As say *Joe Newby* turns up, he'll have no advantage in having a 7.5 over a 10.5, but for someone who can drive a little, should be encouraged to keep it fair. But don't turn people away for it, just encourage/recommend people who can to reduce throttle end point on tranny..... after all, its just fun, id rather race people on a level playing field (not literally) but I wouldn't want anybody to get turned away (as the more racers the better) or be forced to spend on a motor if they already have just 1 to use (it is a cheap class afterall)...

Why don't we have 2 classes?
CORR for stock trucks that have an 8.5 limit and have to use kit tyres, springs, shocks etc.
and-
WSORR which is basically an outlaw class where anything goes.
There will always be those that want to come along with all their top gear and just see how fast they can go.
Whereas, the majority of us will be there for the racing and fun, and so will run CORR.
:)
Maybe instead of doing a National series, how about just having 2/3 GP events per year? A bit like the Micro GP's that are organised. Things like Raffles and prizes for many, from the GP sponsors etc. That way it will be more possible to run 2 classes.
I think that way, it will mean more to people to do well in a GP event than to actually have the pressure of doing a full calendar of Nats?

Sounds like a good plan Tel...
I just want to race mine, against anyone/anything, it just needs an ESC...

Yeah, I think that the GP events might attract more entries too, rather than national series would as (like I said) there's not the pressure to do well at all the rounds, like you would have to with a series.:D
The main emphasis would be fun.

I completely agree, don't think it should be a National Series but a "CML Short Coarse Championships" has a ring to it :D
The CSCC could be fit in between regionals and nationals etc and means you only have to take the truck. Not a buggy in sight?? Could be done as individual GP's as already mentioned. Therefore doesn't matter if you can only get to 3 of the 6 for example.
Could even be the CML Raceway if pidge wants to lets us play in his back garden haha

HRCC are going to hold an open (gp) event on the 18th Oct in Leominster (indoors) supported by cml if anyone is up for that:D.
Early days yet but the date is set.
Planned for SC trucks only (hopefully)
I like the idea of a stock or mod class I will discuss it with the others and see.
I will keep you informed when I hear anything else:)

Im loving the idea of a Stock/modified class. Box stock with something like a 13.5 would provide awesome racing! Yes i guess they would a fair bit slower then the 'Open' class but i don't think there would be enough difference to warrant running the 2 classes if the 'Stock' class ran something like a 10.5. I think RRCi ran 27t offroad years ago and it was brilliant racing.

Ran my SC10 last night, most fun I have had in a long while. Was bloomin ace tbh!
Can't wait for the next time out.
Thanks to the person who lent me a T4 wishbone to keep me going last night (don't know who it was). Will bring a replacement and straight pin to keep your truck going!

Sorry to bring this back from the dead!
I'm just wondering what happened? Did people loose interest in the trucks and go back buggies?
Is it a case of enough interest, but the organisation and planning didn't occur?
