I've ran a losi for 10 years and fancied a change of car. i left my cr for a factory x-6 but did'nt think a lot of it.
so here we go, my losi cr with a little mod i alway wanted to do. pics to follow later..

Are you going to use brushed motor in it?

i hope so or he will be going everywhere in reverse

brushed? not at all, brushless, mambamax 7700kv

but because you have turned the gearbox round when the motor moves the wheels will rotate backwards. can you reverse the directon your motor rotates?

Southwell

Then the gearbox is the wrong way around.

i was jus thinking this. i have seen them modified to have the layshaft coming out of the opposite side

hi mate. it's easy, i just slap my mamba cables the other way..black with red and red with black.

lochness42

It's sensorless, right?

i converted my cr 3 weeks ago  runs like a dream, it was just as quick as the x6's at my local club:) i run a x12 7.5 brushless with
3300 cell ,no problems as yet:Dfinger crossed ,touch wood

If you want to reverse a 3 phase motor you just revers 2 of the phases, i don't know how this will work on a sensored motor but i would expect it to be fine

ashleyb4

Wont work on sensored motors. Only on sensorless.

ashleyb4

done it on sensorless. Have seen someone solder a brushless motor up incorrectly and it just made a funny noise.

i just put a xceloron in my losi and reversed the rotation with the software on my laptop. it works just fine.

lochness42

Sensored motor won't work because - internal timing of motor is +30 degrees by default (that's marked as 0 timing on motors), if you change polarity you'll get -30degrees and that's too much.

was this easy to do?? is it as simple as turning round the gearbox and swapping round the layshaft??

Great conversion and the motors running the correct way.

How have you attached the motor mount back on to the other side of the gearbox ?

mount the rear shock mount to the gearbox using the long bolt then bolt the motorplate to the box and mount and then space the other gearbox bolts making sure you keep the motorplate square.
works a treat:thumbsup: the hardest part was turning the layshaft round,i had to machine the layshaft down to make it fit in the gearbox. i will take the gearbox apart nextweek and post the pic as i rebuild ,then you can see what i did to the layshaft and step by step spacing the motorplate

i run 6 cells 5 at the bottom 1 on top, so i can move the weight forward and backwards by turning the cell around as u can see in the pictures:D the wiring is messy due to work in progress as u can see by my battery strap CABLE TIE thats my next job.

Be good to see the pics when you get chance. Could make a cost effective solution to mid motor cars.

this is great to do with your losi and it's not that hard either. the only thing i have found is that the losi chassis does flex alot more then the x-6.

i'm now in the process of making a modification to make my losi cr more rigid so the chasis plate does not split under stress of my 7700kv.

mods done, its not to bad considering i had not alot of aliminium to play with. hardest part was tapping the bottom so it would thread on to the screw in the chassis.

after fitting it, i had to trim the gear case so it could clear it. i now have the cover held by 1 screw and a bit of battery tape..it does the job. another thing i will say is once you do this, if running the 88spur you will be limited to a 22/23 pinon. to cure this you could use the 78 spur.

hi guys. just a small write-up on my losi mid-motor. I ran it at the cobra event in cardiff yesterday and it went really well. its not the case of slowing down, flicking the back end around then shoot off. this car is now more the case of head down the staight ease off going in then keep the power on the best to your skills and let the momentum take you through. it's shocking how battery placement affects a car that much.
another issue i did have to deal with and did really piss me off, was the fact that a certain driver, i wont name names but the lancky twat knows who i'm talking about thought if i cant beat him, just take him out. so after making a pass down the straight and closing off the inside line, i had a full shunt in the rear cauing my shock tower to let go. how he got off with it so easy i dont know? the only answer i can think of is that there's a brown-nose in the club!
any way i got in to the b final taking 2nd place, not bad considering it's a car that needs tweakin again.

any-1 with mid-motor out there, what setups you got? cheers

DCM

Speaking for the club, we don't run referee's, so people aren't watching the driving standards. So I don't think it is any form of brown nosing. If you had brought it up, I am sure someone would of just watched him a little dude, nobody likes rough driving.

As for the car, it was nice over the bumbs, although it did look a little random on the steering, maybe you need to move some weight forward, especially as your running LiPo?

migsy
25-05-2009, 08:12 AM
I will admit i did struggle with the steering at first, i did find that the front end was light and i did alter a few things to try and get it to grip. i was advised by craig harris to go a little stiffer in the front but by the time i got back into it, i just stuck it out. i have added 20grams to the front but i feel it may require another 15gs to get a little more steering.. better liuck next time.

my setup is NOT the way forward, i use blue spring front and red springs rear because the colours match my body shell:thumbsup:
i have done the project for fun :) winning is a bonus

thats a new one for me. lol. i will be trying some diffrent springs along with pistons and oil. my next change before the next meeting will be to change my rear pivot block to a 2dge to loosen up the rear.

Im sure it was just a racing tap lol

cobra isnt the biggest track ever is it so you allways going to get bashed around a little from an over eager throttle driver- i wouldnt let it spoil your hard work

we have all been there down at the health lol- just take it on the chin

keep up the good work

Ive put about 70-90g in the front of mine, probably more. Helped on steering massively.

Ibe got 110 overall in the b4

how have you got 90 up front? is it a flat plate under the servo?

Morning lads.

are any of you inserting weights up inside the slots of the bulkhead. i was told by a very pleasant chap that doing this will increase over-all steering. i think you can get 3-4 5gram weights up in there.

you can get a brass bulkhead from trishbits or rymart team drivers are runnig these on there cr's

Southwell
27-05-2009, 10:01 AM
No, but i could get it adjusted to allow it. It's miles over weight and the weight is exactly where i want it. I also put a bit of flashing behind the cells instead of the foam.

run it under the cells- ive made two custom battery bars to hold the lipo down

lead flashing would be better as it wouldnt raise the cells up as much
X factory drivers are runnig it under the servo as well

Hi ben.

I found it to be nothing like a car with the motor at the back. because i went across the the chassis with the lipo, i found it to under and was like a new learning point for me.
i'm trying to get it to come out of corners quicker at the moment so i've fitted longer shock rods to the rear in the hope that it will let the car lean into a corner and then square up with-out the breaking away. i'll keep you posted if you like.

cheers. :D

going from standard spring's, i have now changed to using flu yellows at the rear with a 35w oil. i have removed the limiters from inside the shocks to aid more shock travel into corners, i've moved the shock right out on the tower. i am using the mid hole on the wish bone, i find this helps keeping it planted!!!!

at the front, i've fitted blue's with a 40w oil and have moved the shock right in on the tower still using middle hole on wish-bone. there are no limiters fitted.

camber is 2deg at the front and 1 at the rear. 1 deg toe-in at front.
i've got a 3deg pivot block at the rear, still using standard at the front.
ride height: Wishbones are set paraell. i've got 85grams of weight. my gearing with a 7700kv is 21/78.

hope this helps..

just a quicky to fill you in on the mods.

due to the chassis still flexing a fair bit, i have made a modification using 2.5mm fibreglass. i have cut a piece of fibre glass using a lipo as a out-line marker, this was made to be used as a chassis spine.

i fitted it by drilling a hole at the rear so the support brace holds it in place, before i placed it into position, i used industrial fibre-glass glue on the chassis. (spreading it well for a good bond)

i placed the chassis spine piece on to the fibre-glue then bolted it all back into place. i am amazed by how much more rigid the chassis now feels.
you will never totally stop flex, you can only minimize it!!!

Hi Migsy, I'm the 'very pleasant chap' that told you about the lead weights in the bulkhead!
After seeing your car at Cobra and seeing Atomic Carbon's new car, I was inspired to take the dremel to my CR.
Armed with only a small sheet of alloy and a sheet of nylon style plastic I created this:
http://www.oople.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=218&pictureid=2129
http://www.oople.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=218&pictureid=2131
http://www.oople.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=218&pictureid=2130

It's still a work in progress and I haven't run it yet, but I put the alloy plate from the two gearbox screws all the way to the front of the battery slot. It was left wide so that the 4 battery posts would screw through it and the chassis holdong them together. Another alloy plate forms the battery retainer and I've used some brass tube to form a brace between the top of the gearbox and the battery. It seems pretty rigid, but once I'm happy I may bond the alloy to the chassis.

I also managed to reverse the motor plate, took a few goes but I've managed to do it without modifying the gearbox (other than two holes) or the layshaft. When I next strip it down I'll post some pictures on how I did it.
Hopefully see you at Cobra soon.
Pete

Are you modding the gearbox? it will go in reverse other wise, i say that because your using a sensored motor and speedo which cant be wired out of phase to reverse it .

Isnt the layshaft coming out of the opposite side jono to reverse it :eh?:

I have reversed it which is why I said "I also managed to reverse the motor plate, took a few goes but I've managed to do it without modifying the gearbox (other than two holes) or the layshaft":p

Just need to tidy up the plates and brace a bit, possibly get them redone in carbon, but am wary of spending too much as I may as well buy a CR2 when it's released.
