Does anyone know when the less expensive version will be made available. I have seen the full fat version and can see why it costs what it does. I just have not got the funds:(
The durango is fantastic on every level.

Apologies if this is posted elsewhere.

Any update on this budget version?

I guess it is pretty lame to say this as a reply, and may not be welcome but...

Skip a couple of weekends of going out drinking, or save money elsewhere sell stuff on feebay, then pick up the current kit. It is worth every penny  You wont regret it, why wait

I wasn't asking because of the costs. I'm more interested in a molded chassis rather than the aluminum and ball diffs instead of metal gears. I'm sure a budget version with molded chassis and ball diffs will still be on the high side compared to most.

Also, I think a molded chassis and ball diffs will make the buggy more forgiving and easier to drive because of the added flex. I've read about a lot guys having problems getting the car to settle down and drive smoothly.

I have enough rc gear to start a hobby shop, so yes, I could sell some stuff and get the current version or just buy it. But that wasn't the intent of the query.

in my opinion going to ball diffs is a backward step

in my opinion going to ball diffs is a backward step

In certain applications and on some tracks, it's my opinion that a molded chassis with more flex might make the car better. And, in some circumstances, lighter ball diffs may have a considerable advantage over the heavier metal gears. So, I have to respectfully disagree with your generalization.

Anyway, I'm not trying to argue with anyone on this or take anything away from the current version, I was just wondering if anyone knew about a release date or time frame for the budget version. Tough crowd in this thread

Well you could buy the current kit and then buy the ball diffs and plastic chassis as tuning tools when they come out.

I actually agree with 4times on this one. Geared diffs isn't the b all and end all of the car. In some circumstances they can be a hindrance than a help.

but see below

so you have run the car with gear diffs to come to that conclusion?

mine is more consistant, reguires no maintanence of diffs, and they work as the car is getting good results, of road is not a restricted power class, a soft chassis can also hide a poor set up.......... thats my conclusion and a proven facts!

What chasis (Plastic or ali) ?

well being as there is no plastic chassis for the durango,

08-11-2009, 10:14 PM
Well as you cannot tweak ali:yawn:

I'm pretty sure it can! (At least: Show the effects of a tweaked chassis.)

why what make you say that, you can tweak ali, adam did one at the euros,

Rebelrc
08-11-2009, 10:17 PM
Thats called bending

offroadrc
08-11-2009, 10:17 PM
i don't now why they must bring out a cheaper version if you like this car, buy it, gear diffs with sillicon oil are the best, they last the longest i have a rc8te and this car has this kind of diffs to, it's a great thing that you can change the diffoil, it makes a lot of differents when tuning to different tracks

bigred5765
08-11-2009, 10:18 PM
duh and then what happens to the car its tweeked, any curve bend in a chassis is a tweek,

Rebelrc
08-11-2009, 10:24 PM
my understanding is that a tweaked chassis is a chassis that does not flex evenly or in a linear motion for eg (more bendy on the left cornering) but can still apear straight when unstressed when held against a straight edge
A bend in it is called broken ( polite )

bigred5765
08-11-2009, 10:27 PM
nahh, a tweeked chassis is a chassis that gives uneven shock movements or droop, caused buy a twist or bend, resulting in the car handling like a bag of doo doo,

back on topic
i personally need the balldiffs to be released cause the gear diffs are far too heavy for stock racing I do in a hall just bigger than a badminton court....i need bags of aggressive punch
so instead i might have too fire up my original prototype durango 2005 balldiffed animal:)

tweek is another word for bent when the alui baseplate has moved from the original shape. (mardave term)

Rebelrc
08-11-2009, 10:59 PM
Surely that is bent
Oh well Mardave are right and the aviation industry must be wrong

stox217
08-11-2009, 11:05 PM
tweek = no stressmarks (but the baseplate has been reshaped)
bend = stressmarks (white cracks in the aluminium on the bend)

Rebelrc
08-11-2009, 11:13 PM
Get a life stox
you can bend ali with out (white stress marks ) cracks
so the new durango must have the front and rear kick up tweaked into it ...lol...&....lol
we are speaking on two very different levels
but anyway you can win this argument because i cant be bothered to type any more
LOL:)

bigred5765
08-11-2009, 11:19 PM
sorry about the spelling mistake,
tweak, tweek.bend, stress marks, what ever, does it really matter what term is used, only matters in 2d racing, were talking 3d, lol

mark christopher

an alloy chassis can cause tweek, by taking an impact the chassis bends/flexes/etc and often by releasing points mounted to it it will spring back flat, this is common in ic on road ( which i do) indeed you can slack a top deck, twist the chassis, retighten and have a tweeked car.
when alloy flex's its not bent where it is throw away, infact on sever occasions a big hammer can be used.

by the same token a plastic or carbon chassis can tweek weather flexi or stiff.

so you think they should produce a ball diff for you as you race a limited motor class?
why not change your class to run mens motors?:p

the hall is very small but the racing is extremely competative, it often has 50 drivers attend weekly.......

Mark, mark, mark, the world does not revolve around large tracks, there are lots of places that need to run a milder motor, for instance. And as much as it is a 'radical departure' from the norm, the selling point of the Durango, is the 'no compromise' layout, finishing touches like the CVD boots etc. Diffs are just a tuning aide, some people will like the edgy feel of a geared diff, some will prefer the feel a ball diff will give.

Some.... might just think that the price is too much, no matter how much they like the kit. Just got to accept, because you run that car, it may not appeal to everyone, or, dare I say.... agree with you.

i know what your saying but if you used a faster motor and throttle control......

yup its dear but you pay what you get in this world look at the madrat...........
there is such a thing as throttle control!

Marvin
09-11-2009, 02:59 PM
At Faversham there is a 13.5T motor limit. No amount of throttle control will allow anything faster!

It is a polished wood floor too, even a 10.5T would be too much for almost any driver!

I do think Durango would sell loads of the DEX410R kits, if priced around the CAT Sx S1 edition's price. I don't see anyone complaining about the S1 edition CAT saying that 'if you want a CAT you must cough up full price for the carbon spec'. Particularly when you consider that, as DCM says, different materials/ways of doing things are for different track conditions/driving styles. The S1 CAT actually is preferred by many due to the extra flex it provides, meaning that it has more natural grip and is more forgiving.

mark christopher
09-11-2009, 04:05 PM
but is a ball diff (with good quality balls) cheaper to produce than a gear diff? the gear difs have a steel crown wheel, would a plastic or steel be better on a ball diff, would a plastic crown gear lighten the diff to ball diff weight? which is better in a budget car? a gear diff or an adjustable ball diff?

DCM
09-11-2009, 04:10 PM
throttle control is one thing, but if the car feels nervous and edgy, it will feel that, careless of the 'throttle control', you been in the racing scene for long enough, to know that what suits one, doesn't suit another, and not everyone races mod either.

Ball diff save weight? Save money? Maybe, maybe not. We'll see, when it's released.
I see ball diffs (for the DEX410) as a tuning tool, mostly. Seems it would be right at home on a slippy dirt surface that rapidly changes during the course of an event. Quick and easy adjustments, made in seconds. Maybe higher maintenance?
High traction turf surfaces usually don't change much, and that's where gear diffs would shine. Higher traction means higher stress on the diff. Metal gear diffs don't have a problem there. (Ball diffs? Maybe) Set and forget, when you find the right oils. IMO.
Just seems to be another great addition to the already superior Durango arsenal!

(and, I still want to know about the release date!)

bigred5765

no idea why Andy they just do,may be its the fact they are free'er (not a really word?)or the fact that they let the car turn tighter on a loose surface, not sure on the technical bits but in practice thats what they do,

I still don't get it, there's lots of talk about the geared diffs but no real reason to have them (apart form the simple fact they should handle big brushless power). Personally, I like ball diffs, they replaced geared diffs back in the day and I see no reason to change. The geared diffs are the main reason I haven't bought a Durango, i'll keep waiting for the 'cheaper' version that's 'got-balls'.

Chris Doughty
10-11-2009, 03:16 PM
everything gets re-incarnated. everything goes in circles

we thought we had got rid of stick packs sideways across the chassis like the old CAT XLS used to be, but the X6 has come back with it, why? because LIPO is a bit lighter and it makes is possible to do it again.

why are geared diffs back? I assume its because we can use oil in them without them leaking, you can get the same tune as the other guy on the interweb by using the same oil instead of reding his setup sheet and it being 'tight' or 'loose' or something as vague as that.
also you can run the diff very free without it slipping, or very 'tight' without if going notchy.

running rallycross for a year and I really like geared diff's with oil, going back to 10th scale diff's the adjustment is always a bit voodoo, is that tight enough? does it slip? are my balls or plates worn?

at the end of the day, people will run whatever makes THEM fast.

when is the geared diff with one-way rolling outdrives comming? :woot:

bigred5765
10-11-2009, 03:46 PM
its not just the geared diff though is it, thats the whole point as Chris as already said its the fact that they are infinitely more tuned able than any ball diff, its all about the oil and how it works on the gears in the diff, you can run them 100% free-er than a ball diff, without the loss of drive, buy the way Matty doesn't have a durango and i doubt we will be getting one, ball diff or geared diff, but after racing a rally cross for a while i can see the advantages on the track and see how they work, not just the theory behind them,i can see they are like garlic bread,

Sorry too have started this debate dont get me wrong i am sure that if i was using the car as it was designed to be used the ball diffs would be great but its just the weight in a very stop starty stop starty environment ( no such thing as smooth ) is a little too much ! and it will get slayed at faversham........but i will run it never the less:D
looking forward to running them outside soon though.

bigred5765
10-11-2009, 09:31 PM
that would be interesting to see the visible differences between the same car, with ball diff and gear diff at that track,i just cant get my head round the fact that a ball diff would be better because its lighter?i can see how you are thinking, but would like to see it in action.

MRD
10-11-2009, 10:34 PM
I'm all for geared diffs. I need to run a loose rear diff to keep the corner traction with a 6.5 to keep the pace up. This results in either a cooked slipper or a cooked diff, so the diff has to be compromised. The extra rotating mass has a negligble effect when taking into consideration the size and weight of the wheels and tyres so I wouldn't class it as a dissadvantage. 1/8th and 1/10 nitro on road have been using geared diffs for years and rotating mass is as critical, if not more so for these.

i held and photgraphed one yesterday (sorry the pics are for a magazine so i wont release them till there in the mag as requested by TD) but i think i can say keep an eye on the durango site soon and the price will be pleasing!

it looked excellent and id not consider it a budget racer, this will be popular and what is included will suprize many who thought Durango would make it "cheap" as in whats fitted!

I wonder how many parts from the R maybe used on the non-R as tuning options. I like my non-R exactly the way it is but an area I am thinking of is to replace the aluminium side plates with plastic equivalents so as to introduce a little more chassis flex.

is the only way to reduce the price.

BagofSkill

Carbon would actually be more expensive I think, because they'd either have to lay it up in a mould with the front and rear kick ups or make separate front and rear plastic kick ups.

I'd bet on plastic, maybe a moulded plastic tub like most other buggies but we'll find out next week- Unless one of the schnorbits that keeps bragging they know share it first...

I hope not, remember the Aero A-one? at first it was a rip off of an earlier Durango, but it worked, Lee Martin won the National title with it, then they made a plastic tub chassis for it, and it stopped working after that.

I'm thinking metal chassis, plastic side pods.

Plus if you don't get extra anti-squat brackets, roll bars etc in the kit, plus swap a few metal parts like the servo mount for plastic, that would all help keep costs down.

I'm looking forward to seeing it, been thinking of getting a second DEX as a spare car as it is, a cheaper one might fit the bill perfectly:thumbsup:

And now seen pictures of the prototype showing a milled aluminium chassis with plastic sidepods, platic front uprights and steering servo mount. All CVD's changed to 2.0mm pins, so I guess the only question left it ball diff or gear.

I wonder how many parts from the R maybe used on the non-R as tuning options. I like my non-R exactly the way it is but an area I am thinking of is to replace the aluminium side plates with plastic equivalents so as to introduce a little more chassis flex.

All the parts should be interchangable between the two cars. Its only the materials used that is the difference. ;)

....although I could be wrong.:eh?:

Thats Awesome! it has upgrades on it that haven't been released yet, and it is completely comparable with the normal version, from what i see (prob. more than meets the eye) - - - if they can release that at the price they listed, it will kill everything!

when are they releasing the 2.0mm drive shafts? really looking forward to those:thumbsup:

I can't believe thats going to be the 410R - more like testing parts that will be used on the 410R...

Looking at that, with the pro shocks & upgraded transmission - it would cost less than £200 to upgrade to full 410 spec meaning that we'd all buy the R & the alloy bits & have a load of spares/parts left over:eh?:

Hoping I'm wrong, but it looks too good to be true.

quoted from DURANGO "other companies design, sell, see what breaks, sell options; then sell a ‘team spec’ car – Team Durango won’t take this approach".

Has someone actually confirmed at Durango that it is the actual 410R in the pictures??? Perhaps Hupo only are testing some ot the 410R features on his 410.

raymondkerr
07-03-2010, 09:13 PM
I have a feeling, that what we see in the pics, are just parts that Hupo is testing on a regular DEX410. I think that the shocks on the R won't be the same as the full version, although I must say, at £250 it will be the best 4WD in that price range, and will be very interesting to see the pics when they are released, soon I hope.

Along with the 2mm driveshafts!

Fair play to durango they are producing a very good car for the money. The carbon bits and titanium turnbuckles are the only bits I would get if I was looking at getting one, the alloy bits are very nice to have but they aren't really essential.

If I was one of the other manufacturers I'd be worried about my sales forecast.

Just one thing though...these upgrades, like 2mm cvd's/drivetrain etc, cvd collar, lipo brace, transponder mount.. Will these become part of the DEX410 kit now? and for those who already own the DEX410 when will they be all available to buy?? and what about a cost?

the decent thing to do would be to offer the upgrade kit for CVD's to those that can supply a DEX-410 serial number as suggested.

the transponder mount is part of the plastic side pod!

raymondkerr
10-03-2010, 11:28 PM
I like the idea of the transponder mount, mines keeps coming loose in that vertical position. Would like to try the plastic side pods thought, wonder if it will give more flex. The 2mm pins is a good idea also, but i might try a drill the ones i have out, as I'm not needing new centre shafts yet.

All in all I think durango have a definate winner here, At £250 it will by far be the best 4WD in that price catergory.

any other company would ?

Just because they improve things (as ALL comanpies hopefully do) doesn't mean they should send out those parts for free? Crazy suggestion that they should or that other companies do.

I could fill the screen with weak points on various cars that were addressed / revised later - and I don't recall anyone getting free stuff.

The only thing that possibly comes to mind is the Tamiya Jugg - it was apparently horrificly weak and was quickly replaced by the Jugg2, and all Jugg owners got a free upgrade kit afaik.
I don't remember Tamiya giving me a revised camber mount for my 501X when they revised it because it was weak though? Or giving out the grey ball cups because the kit ones are crap - or giving TRF511 owners replacement ball studs because they were crap, or giving 501X owners new wheels because the front ones were crap. Etc etc, so maybe the Jugg was a one off?

Totally agree with Jimmy! I've been a Durango prototype fan for a long time, so I find it fantastic that Strenge & Co managed to start a company and actually produce and sell it!

Aero as we all know was a failure, and Serpent never got it together at all.

BUT - all new cars have "child deceases"... so personally I want to wait until "MKII"/"SP1" is out

Will the R version be updated as to the now known issues?

That car will also be much lighter right? (how much?) (without brass weights)

I can't confirm I have one fully assembled DEX410 Pro Spec, and one unassembled DEX410 Pro Spec (minus main chassis/side braces),and all the option parts, and 95% of the spares needed for repairs/rebuilds. Oh, and a very cool TD t-shirt! So, it might be unfair to some, if TD sent current owners free upgrades. I don't expect TD to do that. I would, however, be amazed, and extremely public about the fantastic TD Support, should they actually supply myself, and all current owners, with the upgrade free of charge! I'd be a TD owner for life! (Already there!)

Although the original pins are smaller and seem more easily broken/worn, I have had no problems since using two set screws on each drive pin. Not one issue! I've even used a softer metal pin (so I'm told) than the TD part, and still have had no issues. I don't believe the issue is with the part or design, as much as the lack of the second set screw in the kit. Anyway, I'll be upgrading to 2mm as soon as I can afford it, just for durability sake. 'Til then, it's two screws for me! :) Yep, that's what I said. Ha!

Btw, Jarred, thanks for the setup info. Very helpful! http://www.oople.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif
