View Full Version : 1/8 indoors at bury

I don't know about you lot but I think the 1/8 buggys are awesome powerful and great fun. But I don't think they should be used at the indoor venue. The 1/8 cars are going to either rip the floor covering or really hurt someone. Also drivers waiting for the next heat are in danger I must have counted at least 5 buggys come over the table top and jump into the drivers waiting in that area also restricting the view for the racers coming round the bottom carpeted hair pin. I think this area should be no waiting due to the danger. People not racing the current heat should remain in the pit area until the last car has finished

I agree 100%. Also when the race is over all none racers leave that area asap. The number of times I put my car down, got onto the rostrum then couldn't see my car for all the people hanging round that bottom corner, which is pants when you only have like 20 seconds to line up on the grid.

I could not agree more mark. I to had the exact problem at one point someone just stopped himself standing on my car. It just felt like chaos for about 30 secs before each race

I found afew times when i was finishing my race that i was getting hussled on the rostrum from the next heat drivers getting there spot, which was annoying but i do understand that it was quite rushed between heats. Defineatly struggled seeing at times though , i`m not moaning just think Dave has a point

it was bit of a crush round that point and yes could not always see car when racing because of amount of people in one space, also when racing all it needed was the person next to you to lean slightly forward and you could not see the corner either end of track, just need to remember when next planning track leave a couple of meter in front of rostrum not put track right up to it.or taper track away from rostrum at a slight angle either end keeping full depth in the middle.

My personal opinion is the 1/8th should stick to 1/8th tracks. There are 3 top tracks near Bury, NNRC in Preston, PRCC in Blackpool, and Pdmcc in Nelson. If a track is designed for 1/10th which Bury clearly will be the 8th's are just too big/fast.
So if any of the 1/8th contingent want to race on REAL 8th tracks come over to the above tracks and we promise not to beat you by much.

I was the marshal on the scene when one of the 1/8ths smashed apart the jump just before the straight. Considering how heavy those ramps are (I carried them out of storage) there was a lot of force in that impact. Certainly had me thinking our current level of bystander protection wasn't up to dealing with that sort of mass at that speed.
In truth though the 2 we had were well driven and under decent control. The problem is this (http://www.modelzone.co.uk/ep8_highvolt_18th_brushless_super_combo-details.htm) - available from the model shop in the Trafford centre for £300 and even less at Modelsport. Thats true RTR - even with lipos making it an exceptionally cheap car. That means potentially we could have complete novices (or worse still me!) driving cars only a little slower and just as heavy as those on Sunday. That is a very worrying concept.

Sorry - My fault for not fixing it properly!
It needed taping down again but clearly that couldn't be done mid race, and with so little time between heats I did what I could, then had to stop. I should have fixed it between the heats and finals but forgot
Don't worry about it, its my excuse for not winning ;).

I was one of the only two 1/8th racers at bury this weekend and I am struggling to see your issue with safety.
I have raced 1/8th RallyX for over 5 years and have never see any broken legs nor have I seen anyone killed by a 1/8th Buggy, Believe it or not I have seen more broken bones from 1/10th cars in my early years of 1/10 racing, I also see more accidents from safety issues with the track (people tripping whilst marshalling) or falling rostrums.
If the track is set out correctly and drivers are warned at the drivers briefing not to gather around the rostrum then there will be less chance of an accident.
Also with the issue of the 1/8'ths ripping the flooring up off the jumps, add a little more carpet to that landing area to protect.
I think what the Bury club have done to allow 1/8 to race is a very good thing and would hate to see them get banned because of an issue with safety.

I agree. The issue isn't with the 1/8th cars - it's just with keeping people away from the track.
Rather than going to the extremes of netting the whole track, just some safety tape in the busier areas (where drivers are waiting and reading the time sheets) would be sufficient. That would keep the view clear for the corners as well. You could always net just the near corner if any issues were evident.
The last thing I would want to see is any class being excluded unnecessarily. I know that Bury have always been very open to running other classes and I think that this is good for the hobby.

The 1/8th looked good going round. They were loads faster than the trucks though. Its a shame there arnt enough to make their own heat. The younger driver did seem to be struggling with his car. Thats not his fault as we all need to start somewhere. It was a little hard work trying to get round and keep out of the way too. Those 1/8th cars can really push the trucks around. But I believe that 1/8th electric will catch on and I hope will see more of them:thumbsup:

I wasn't suggesting 1/8th are in any way unsafe, just that I felt the safety measures we had put in place were inadequate to cope with them. I've been to nitro races before and agree that on a correctly set out track they are effectively safer than 1/10th (because we often skip safety issues) but that is at a proper 1/8th track.
Essentially we are left with a choice - build the track with the 1/8ths in mind, or not allow them. Its possible to increase spectator safety fairly easily (there were more benches to make barriers) but marshal safety is a lot harder. Several marshals got hit by 1/10ths especially marshalling the jump. A hit from an 1/8th in full flight would have you in hospital.

04-11-2009, 10:33 AM
The only things I can think of to increase marshal safety are...
1/ Give advice in the drivers briefing, especially for new drivers, as to what to be aware of when marshalling. Also advise drivers regarding slowing down when a marshal is in certain areas of the track.
2/ High visibility vests for marshals.
3/ Moving the marshalling points to make some areas easier to marshal. I think that having the larger gap suggested by someone earlier between the rostrum and track would make the tabletop easier to marshall.
Maybe these would help. These are just things I've thought of quickly, so criticism is welcome.

These things, and im sure Birdy will correct me if im wrong, have been in place at NNRC since its inception and surely they are just common sense??
Si Coe
04-11-2009, 04:27 PM
Yes - for a nitro track! But they are much less common in electric 10th as at times they are arguably not needed.
This is what I mean - its not that the 1/8th themselves are the problem, they just need more care to be taken.
steelie600
04-11-2009, 04:29 PM
But surely Si, nitro leccy 10th 8th or largescale its just common sense. end of the day no matter what the size of the cars, the inertia is what does the damage, so with the 10ths being just as fast if not faster than the 8ths its more reason to implement above ideas??

It's something they use at some outdoor venues (for 1/5th scale IIRC). It is sometimes to do with marshalls not being seen - lots of drivers don't look ahead and a flash of bright colour makes you aware there's something there.
You could run no safety if you want - I'm just coming up with suggestions to resolve the issue mentioned so that the 1/8th guys can keep running with us. As I said before, I wouldn't want to see any class excluded for any reason. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned.

I dont think jackets would be the answer i mean wat next next will we have to fill in a health and safety log books just in case were hit by a 1/8th the worlds going mad:o..... maybe we should cover all are cars in bubble wrap and then there wouldn't be a issue here, me personally loved seeing the trucks,1/8 on track it has actually made me seriously think about buying one for future races.

To be fair to the young lad it was his first race meeting & the first time he had used the car so probably shouldn't of been in your heat there alot harder to slow down than a 10th car!
When he put some non kit tyres on he did ok infact looking at the results he beat people who have raced much longer than him finishing 4th!
I do agree we should keep people waiting away from the big jump though some people seamed to just launch it and crash there lap after lap!

There has been some good ideas and a lot of input from drivers of all skill levels(me being the worst apart from shanks)
so the upshoot is when building the track I think we will be aware of the danger points and also the 1/8 buggys . No waiting in the area where the heat sheets and transponders are and maybe leave a space of about a metre in front of the rostrum to aid visability of all the track. I will be there helping rog, woody and the lads the Saturday before the race so hopefully we should be able to accomadate some of the ideas. Not sure of the hi vis though
we've all got to remember we won't get a second chance if we damage the floor covering we are out no second chances. Then what do we do for rest of winter??????

A good idea, we have some down at the track.
A quick look around the track and I'll see straight away who is marshalling and who should be penalised for not doing so.
To make it even more strict we could have you stay at your marshalling point until you're relieved. It's bad enough when you wander off before the race has finished. (I blame the PA for that. It not being clear due to the echo of the room)

This sounds like a plan... Hi Viz Vests then we know who the marshalls are.. :) Name and Shame and penalise lol!! I suggest also marshalls should stay at points until relieved..
As for heat sheets and and race print outs move them well away from the rostrum.. maybe even to near the doors into the hall..??
Then have transponders near to the rostrum at the side of the track next to the wall with say a couple of tables or even use the big trolley we use for carting the rostrum away etc that way this can also double up for somewhere for people who have just raced to put there car and transmitter on...
Then the barriers we use around the sand pit, use some of these to create a barrier set back from the track so the track doesnt get obscured at any time from the rostrum. So it creates a walkway between pits and rostrum and race control.
Cheers

Its only for fun, no need to marshall at point until relieved. What about the number 10's that may not have a 10 in the following heat? I say some people need to open their eyes, as long as cars are circulating from the heat - then they stay at the point, if they can't do it, tell them, but don't penalise the majority by making them wait to be relieved.

The biggest problem I saw was that the 2 mins turn around was not really enough to collect your car, return transponder, put car somewhere safe and reach your marshal point. I was noticably later reaching my point after running truck (no pt and marshal point at far end of track) than after 4wd (pt and marshalling next to my pit table!)
It would make the most sense if there was a table for drivers finishing their heats to leave their car on, next to the transponder rack for returning that, and right by the rostrum. That way all that is needed is switch off, transponder out and off to marshal.
The fact is even when slow I was normally one of the quickest out to marshal. Many races started without marshals, not because they weren't coming, they just hadn't arrived yet. But if its wait till relieved we'd be swapping marshals mid-race which is just as bad.
Basically we need to slicken up the marshal changeover - most of that has obviously to come from the racers, but Bury as a club can help by adjusting the layout to make this easier.

Alot of interesting talk, my views are
1: High vis vest is a good idea , as Roger said (keep track of who`s marshalling and where they are).
2: Track has a metre gap from rostrum to track
3: More time from finishing a race to getting out to marshal the next race.
4: The following heat and spectators are kept away from the track to stop blind spots and for safety reasons.

I had considered the marshal the heat after the heat after yours option myself, but figured it might lead to people failing to marshal. Not on purpose, they just settle down to start doing something and forget! The tannoy isn't always that easy to here whilst racing is going on.
I was racing in heat 7 and heat 9, so I had to race 4wd, dump the car, grab my truck and take it to marshall with me, then straight up onto the rostrum to race and then dump it and marshall again. One I got organised it was easy and I wasn't late for mashalling. It just takes organisation :D.

theres enough time between you finishing racing and getting back out to marshal if you don't do a next 3 laps :) may be have a returns table plonk your car on there and have marshal 10 take bugs out and put them back on the table, pick them up after your race.

Actually half the problem was that I'd park my car after the jump on the lap I finished, but it took a while to get off the rostrum with the next heat coming on, then work my way through the crowd to retrieve my car, remove the bug, wander through the crowd to put the bug in the rack, wander through the crowd to stash my truck under the rostrum (only place I could find) and then get out to marshal.
If we eliminate the crowd at that bottom corner, that would really speed things up!

Some fair points there, the small gap between heats works fine if everyone has a pt, but maybe an extra 30 seconds between heats would give that little bit of time to return if you are on a hand out. I only managed it cause Mike Bradbury kindly took my car away after the race and sorted that out for me.
It'd be useful to have a table with space for all the cars transmitters so you could just pick your car up, switch off and go straight to marshall. I think the idea of skipping a heat is good in principle but it's simpler to just go straight out then there's no forgetting, or temptation to go and mess with your car.
The idea to start a little earlier is a good one and from reading other threads this will happen next time.
The other comment I would make would be with regard to marshalling, and I've seen this at other clubs, if you have a seat at the marshall position this serves 2 purposes; 1, it stops marshalls standing up and blocking the view of the drivers, and secondly points them to which bit of track they should be marshalling if it isn't obvious. I rarely complain about marshalls cause on the whole people do their best, but the problem is if you happen to make a mistake in the wrong part of the track and the mashall isn't looking where he should be you can lose maybe 10 seconds on one lap, enough to put you down the pecking order a good few places.
One other thing is with driving discipline, it'd be useful in a full heat that people know who are the faster cars, and in that situation a bit of commentary may be useful to stop the driivers who are being lapped 'racing' the faster cars.
Having said all that, these are minor comments and on the whole the club is run excellently by the team.

Agreed these will all get sorted on the next Saturday track setup i`m sure.
