yeah, the big jump is alot better than it was. alot of people though are finding it hard to get it right:confused: but i just find it great. ive tried the triple, which is okay, but not the best.

is any1 at bury on sunday??

It's ok, but im not the biggest fan. I prefer obstacles that dont cause random behaviour to the car. If you are a club memeber and race there week in week out then you will inevitably master it, for the others then they will just get frustrated.

The first jump isnt as bad as it was, but still a little random every now and then. The tripple is a tricky little bugger. Standing on ground level near the jump you can see the line to take, but even then it gets a little random at times.

Overall its a great track, but i think you might hear a few moans and groans about the new features come the national

I have to aggree Wayne, it does need practice, I suspect there will be some moans.

I went down there a couple of weeks ago on a friday afternoon and just ran over, and over, and over the jumps, for me personally it's now fine.

I'd not have liked to have turned up for the national without being able to practice berfore however, I think I'd have been one of the moaners.

I'll be hovering around the new areas this summer with the camera, should get some good crash pictures. :)

What I find amazing is that some people go to Bury Metro during the week, I know now how my fence is getting damaged. It is really easy if you all ask me or Dad to come down as we live 2 mins away with a key so no body damages my fence.
Regards the jumps, I was told to change due to a certain person went to the BRCA and put a conplaint in regarding that you could jump the fence if you really wanted to. Big question to him, what about the bank at the end of the straight, the big banked corner????
What about other tracks? Kiddy etc.
My club has spent alot of time and effort keeping this track going, where is the respect. Should of come to the club first and made your coments aired there.
Thats it rant over. Please Please when you go down to the track ask first and we can get a key to you.

Stu

I think the jump at the back is really good now Stu, it can be taken fast as a proper double or slower (ie like me), landing on the 'table-top' and hopping down. I'm not saying there are non but I have not spoken to a local driver who does not think it's now sorted.

The safety issue, well, you are right - we've seen cars jump the fence at the end of the straight next to the ex-jym, it's potentially a faster and more dangerous spot than the start of the back straight, allthough it's not a place that people generally stand to spectate.

The fence - point taken on board.
It has to be said though that I can jump (thats me with legs, not car) over it with tranny in hand, I suspect it's the scrotes with BMX's and paint cans that do the damage.

Thanks

Stu

Pictures will not help much Brian, you'll see the differernce when you run a car over it.

The up-slope is more consistant and the second hump is now a broad table top, so it's not do-or-die.

There are also three small jumps just before the astro banking, they are well spaced to make it a single & double, or it can be three singles.

It's ok, but im not the biggest fan. I prefer obstacles that dont cause random behaviour to the car.

Well the only way not to get random behaviour is by racing on a flat track with wooden boards as ramps. Batley has random behaviour, as does Kidderminster and Southport certainly does more than most but this doesn't make them bad tracks, far from it infact.... you are aware this is off-road right? :D

If you are a club memeber and race there week in week out then you will inevitably master it, for the others then they will just get frustrated.

Don't have to be a club member to come regular ;) , but it doesn't take weeks to learn the features - shouldn't take more than a few practice laps really.... If you feel an advantage is to be had by practicing, you are correct, but same goes for any track does it not? Wayne - come and practice! ;)

I have run only about 3 packs of cells around Bury with the new features, and find all the features great fun to get right, do-able with some effort (easy is boring afterall) and do-able accross the broad section where the racing line should be - also off-line too, but if off-line then chances are its for a reason (mistake) and so shouldn't be carrying any speed to launch off a ramp into randomness anyway.

As for safety... well, like Woody said... there are mountains and there are mole hills, lets not confuse them.

Chrislong

I'll be at Bury on Sunday, looking like I'll be racing ..... well, I can't make my mind up, Ive just changed it 3 times while typing this!!!! One thing for sure is that it won't be both cars.

Woody, are you doing 2wd? if so I'll do the same.

The new jumps have added fresh interest to an already excellent track. The club has spent considerable money, time and effort in an attempt to freshen things up, and my advice is come up and try the new features for yourselves.

The double / table top after the block paved horse-shoe is much more driver friendly now, although it can still catch you out. The triple at the end of the back straight is a challenge - the quick line over them will vary depending on which track layout is chosen immediately after them (obviously  ). Danny McGee was making them look very easy at the last meeting.

The new jumps make the track interesting. I Personally like them. Yes im a newbie driver and i get them wrong more than i get them right, but when i get them right it feels good and lap times are good.

The good drivers like Danny McGee, WoOdy and Chris Long are AWESOME over the jumps, and make them look a doddle.

i raced at southport on sunday for the first time and the back straight was very erratic, give me a decent double any day. But the rest of the track was consitant and a very good track for "racing" rather than Krypton factor obstacle course.

Each tracks has its good and bad points and thats what makes them different and keeps the sport interesting.

i think all english people moan about jumps!!!!

you moan when you dont have them....and wen you do have them you moan also!!!

this annoys me with my track.

people have begged and pleeded over al lthe forums, we want jumps, this that etc!!

finally you get what you ask for and then moan about it....

a flat grass track is about as boring as it gets, one pants wooden jump wont change that!

everyone i kno at racing wants to race in america....why?????

for the JUMPS!

people find my track an obstacle course, or so they say...my track has the most consistent jumps ever, you will struggle to find a more consistent track, and yet people still like to have a moan.

Woody, ignore it...its stupid...build the track how you want...you will never make everyone happy...fact of life.

the rest of you who dont like it...a little advice................

if you cant do it...............dont! until you have time to practice and get it right...when you can do it, u will start to appreciate what has been done..theres nothing better than someone with good car control, whether it be airborn or not....

people seem to be getting angry!! :o

At the end of the day, the new feature is difficult. People are expressing their opinions. Some will like it, some wont. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I hope most people will judge for themselves, and not be influenced by other people.

And what we mustned forget, Bury is a good track, a very good track run by good people.

Just remember Mike,

If you cant do it...............dont!

You'll do better over 5 mins if you don't go-for-gold each time. If you crash on 1 lap you may well loose more time than if you take it steady on all the laps.

i raced at southport on sunday for the first time and the back straight was very erratic ........

The back section at Southport is a good comaprison, if you are too fast for yourself if does get erratic, all you have to do is lay off the spuds a bit and it's fine.

I'm taking Vermin with me i'd guess Tom will give him a lift.

As for the tracks, i've raced at Southport just the once, and i love it, the back section is awesome a real challenge. I really like racing at Bury as well and i'm looking forward to trying the new sections out and making a real hash of them.

We should give our thanks and support to all the people who build and maintain the tracks we race on because without them we'd be screwed.

well we ran on the new OBSTACLES this weekend the double on the fare side of the track is ace now well done guys, love it.
But and its a big but, the triple is a right royal pain, now i love offroad and obstacles. but it so random and hard to get right even at a crawl it beaches the car, it really needs smoothing out so its bigger and has a nice approach ramp, its just to steep and to small and the same goes fore the landing step/ ramp.
sorry if it seems like a bit of a rant but, it really needs working on badly

losichris

have to agree.. the gaps in between the jumps are too big to double because there isnt enough speed for take-off..unless 4wd.

the double/table top on the top left is ACE, i love it. but the tripples a little need work to be 100% spot on, in the wet it was hit or miss if you could clear them or not.. ussually not, but in the dry they were do-able.

They just need smoothing out, and the second one along moving closer, or the first one moving away.

great day today, it was enjoyable non the less.

I think it would be far more constructive IF the views on the new track features came ONLY from racers, and not fathers or mechanics, only then can the club gauge whether or not work needs to be done.
After experiencing this first hand, spending nearly 2 days getting the ground ready, laying a track out for a regional, only for a few fathers/mechanics to do nothing but critasise the hard work, you and the rest of the host club, put towards trying to create a good track and meeting.

true Brian, but that is the view of the driver and the mechanic and about 10 other drivers that were there,
they do need work and could become fantastic, with very little effort and time
they are just a little to short and sharp,

woOdy
06-05-2007, 08:24 PM
See, the thing is we wanted something that would only be done by a selected few. The option is there so if you cant do it then go slower and take them singly. If you beach out then you are going too slow. I have built them to test drivers not to make it easy like the big jump on the left now( TOO EASY ).

woOdy
06-05-2007, 08:26 PM
O and yes, maybe its a nice idea that I may of built them so home drivers have an advantage. In other words practice more. If you go a little wider on the corner before the first bump and hit it striaght you can do it everytime. Ask Chris Long.

RobHatcliffe
06-05-2007, 09:12 PM
The triples are do-able in a number of ways. I wasn't there today to see who struggled or who mastered them, but based on the previous 2 meetings, I've seen a couple of different approaches work:-

1) Roll the first one and then double the second two. Woody, Danny McGee, Stu Mahon, Northy and others seemed to make this work lap after lap.

2) Roll the first one, and slowly up to each the second two, a little blip on the throttle to lift the front wheels and you're laughing. Not as quick as option 1 but still achieves a clean pass.

No-one has commented on the new 'off-set' double on the right hand side. Did you use it today? What do people think?

PaulRotheram
06-05-2007, 09:27 PM
the offset double worked well, they need singleing of course, they are different which is good.

The main problem today, was the complete lack of grip for the triples, along with the shape of each hump being very triangular made it more of an obsticle to get it right. in practise and the first round when it was dry, they were good.. but when the track became wet, they were hit and miss (my bj4 with a 9x2 struggled to get over on some occurences !)

Both ways you suggested were tried, in fact with the amount of track time everyone had today they should of been done perfectly, but basically everyone struggled with them. a nice handful of f1 and f2 drivers were in attendance, if these people struggle with it, then the rest surely would id imagine.

a more rounded profile would work well I think, as then the cars will have more momentum for the next jump. or even if the first hump was made bigger and rounder, so the second two can be jumped.

Its all good having home advantage, I know of this being a southport regular, but if it is causing problems for the majority of racers, then surely itd be better to please more people who will then praise the track, rarther than have a few people happy, and more complaints.

I'm only thinking/commenting.. please dont take this as me slagging the section off. it worked well, but it could be improoved if wanted to.

If they are kept, then fair doos as most people will be in the same boat besides a few home f1 drivers.

WHITTLER555
06-05-2007, 10:27 PM
Paul, your explanation of what happened today is spot on.

The grip certainly disappeared as soon as it rained, which made judging the jumps a lot more difficult.

Roger actually commented to me on the lack of grip and we put it down to the levels of sand and new astro on the track.

I could only get one type of rear tyre to grip and unfortunately it won't be allowed at the National.:(

I am sure it will be sunny in June!

no one is trying to upset anyone, just saying that the way they have been constructed will lead to more damage being done to cars, they are just a little to steep and harsh, were trying to put in some input to help further the club and the track.last thing needed is people not turning up for fear of damaging the car, even if you just slightly get it wrong as is it bites the car and spits it out, in bits.
we love bury, and are regulars so understand your position, and appreciate the time and effort, you guys put in,and in all fairness it isn't that for of being perfect, its only the triples causing problems, love the rest

Stu
07-05-2007, 08:48 AM
I had no problem with them, but it was dry all the time I was there. I did try doing them as singles and found that when I did that I could take the first of the three faster as I was not trying to get a perfect run to the second. The car also exited the section perfectly under control, meaning a good line through the next section every time.

It's obviously not gonna get you in the 'A' an the national, but if you go for gold each time when you can't do it it you are going to be in the 'Z' anyway.

A feature that is too dificult is only one with no 'get-out' option (for this reason the toning down of the double at the back of the track was a good thing), this is different.

The tabletop at the far left near the banked bricks is now ace, plenty of airtime and a nice proper downramp to land on. The right hand side is still a bit iffy as it's not quite level and can throw you sideways in the air, but the landing seems really forgiving of that and you can get away with it most of the time.

The triples on the other hand...
See, the thing is we wanted something that would only be done by a selected few. The option is there so if you cant do it then go slower and take them singly. If you beach out then you are going too slow. I have built them to test drivers not to make it easy like the big jump on the left now( TOO EASY ).

Thats all well and good but the thing is they can't be taken slowly, you just fall over forward onto your roof. My BJ4 had no trouble getting over them as it easily had enough drive to clear the second jump and being 4wd hit them straight every time. 2wd though in the damp conditions was a complete joke for everyone, there isnt enough run up to clear them in lower grip conditions and if you are a bit enthusiastic with the throttle and hit them even slightly sideways all sorts of random things happen. For anyone that hasnt been the second and third bump on the triple are much steeper and more aggressive than the tabletop at Batley, with what feels like 5 feet run up from the first bump.
I think all that needs doing it to smooth them out a bit and make the second jump slightly bigger and more like a jump, and less like a slightly angled wall :D

Also the hump that has been added going onto the banking needs looking at/removing too, it doesnt really add anything to the track and seems to kick the back end up quite badly on 2wd's. Again my BJ4 went over it no problem but only because I was able to pull the nose up better in the air with 4wd.

As Paul said the angled jumps in the middle are very different, they are as aggressive as the triples but if we take the same route through them as we did yesterday they will be fine. Finding a quick line through them will be a challenge :)

Please don't think I'm having a moan Woody, just trying to help ;)

Me and Dad have been down and tried to do to the jumps what you all asked. We have smoothed them off but they still cant be done in the wet(even me). They are not ment to be done in the wet. Regards nose diving, this is because you still need to blip the throttle to pick the nose up.

If it was only a select few, then it could be left.. but near everyone at the meeting yesterday struggled lap by lap.

I've kept out of this and still will, but what I always like to see is a nice consistant "raceable" feature, because, thats what we are doing after all.

The thing is Stu, if people don't like it, they will still turn up to the regionals and nationals because they have to, but unfortunatly it will be the club meetings that will suffer. :( :( :(

At the end of the day, we're all entitled to our own opinion and we all need to acknowledge that we can't all be satisfied at once.

At Bury, the new features seemed to be disliked by the majority, but if we make features liked by the majority then those features would just be carbon copies of what has already beed done and thats boring. What we have now is something that is different, and so takes some learning to do it.

In the wet we all seemed to struggle with 2wd to clear the double, but we were all using Yellow Minispikes which were completely mullered. Even in the wet I was managing to do it with the X-6 (maximum effort and 80% success) but when the 'big' day comes I'll have the right tires and new ones at that - so will probably be a lot easier..... and if it isn't easier, then we'll all just have to ride it - we'll all do whichever way is fastest over 5 minutes.

The reason why the jumps are a little triangular, is because triangular makes the jump consistent accross the width. Sculpting a rounded jump is a lot more difficult to make consistent accross the width.

Personally, before the new feature I found Bury quite easy to drive fast, but the new features changes that and previously when Sunday comes and I am pondering over which club meeting to attend, I would have previously gone to Southport since I feel I struggle there but now I think "Need to go to Bury" and so it keeps me regular.

I do off road now because its 'off road', no matter what jump type is in front of me. I thought the Idea was that you have to adjust your driving for each different track.
I can't comment on the track as I didn't race there so I'm not putting my oppinions on that across.

But I want to do away with the flat stuff, so the flatter grass tracks with the small jumps are less apealing that the multi surface ones with undulations and nice jumps.

I can't wait to get to these kind of tracks no matter what jumps are there.....I'll probably be rrrrrrrubish on them but at least its not flat tarmac.;)

I've not been to Bury this year and am missing the regional as well as I'm on holiday, but it seems to me that no-one has any right to moan at WoOdy here. There were posts advertising for a work party (by Stu) and on this forum at least the club seems to be kept in the limelight (by Stu). If people are not happy with the features, then they should have gone and done the work to get input into it!
Top marks to WoOdy for all the hard work - that's my view.

I'll look forward to the new chalenge when I race there next

shouldn't these comments be taken constructively, rather than than the insult it seems to be being taken?

everyone here wants to race on the best tracks around the country. changes to existing tracks will be made to improve them. I've never known a change to a track provoke so many comments.

the concern I have is, is it the majority that are concerned about the change, or the minority. if its the first then to what extent does it bother them? enough to put them off going to club meetings, and only go cos they have to when a regional/national is on, or you'd prefer it different but will still go to club meetings anyway.

surely its a goid idea to see how much its bothering everyone.

The National at Bury Metro is five weeks away and from reading this it seems that the triple jump being talked about is ok in the dry but tricky to conquer in the wet.
Hopefully it will be a scoorching HOT weekend with plenty of grip and we won't be talking about the jumps after the event.
I've always been tought that if you don't first succeed TRY,TRY & TRY Again until you get it right.
I have never been to Bury Metro but i am looking forward to racing there and try to get these jumps mastered.

i think all these people have put their points across only because of the wet? as all the people that have raced in the dry have said that there is nothing wrong with it.

You've completely and utterly read the comments on this thread in the wrong light. They are comments to try to give direction of what people would prefer, wether or not it is taken on board is up to the club.

I've gave my view on it, and shall not comment further, as it seems there will be always people who take it the wrong way, thanfully stu has taken everyones comments and has tried to improove the criticisms.

I look forward to coming back to the track soon.

But unfortuately we live in England, so rain and wet conditions are pretty common. :(

I can see both sides of the arguement regarding the triple. Granted earlier on in the day yesterday I was cursing the triple with many other people but as Woody etc keeps saying with practice it will become comfortable. You just have to be confident and keep the power on backing off will lead to broken shock towers ( ask Gav!) Ive just returned to off road after 5 seasons of TC so this is a whole new thing to me but you just get on with it. Do you think they change the track to suit all at a big race like the cactus classic-No! you just get on with it. At the end of the day everybody is in the same boat so no advantage is to be gained by anyone and becides whats wrong with a bit of home advantage for the national?

The way I see it:
If I vote at election time, I have a right to moan when Labour get in again. if I don't vote when I had the chance, then sobeit.

If majority think changes need to be made, lets get a work party going.

Looks like I've trod on a few toes...
Maybe I spoke out of turn (fair points Paul and Chris) but I believe the general "jist" of the post is accurate.
Anyway, appologies to all

I must add to this when this section was buit Stu didnt want it to be like it is I think he wanted a table top but he was overruled by me and the others that where there doing the work. I helped build this section and I dont like it, but as Stu has already said it has been changed so it should be OK now.:)

The reports I have heard about the jumps are give room for concern. But all tracks should be built for the off road cars that we all enjoy seeing raced, they should not be built as a obstacle course for the cars. Do not forget that at a National the Race referres can have the course altered if they deem the Track to be Non Raceable.;) ;)
