Evening all,
As some of you guys may (or may not) know I run 1/10th Off Road and have done for many years but thanks to the generousity of my wife about 3 years ago she bought be a RTR FTX Blaze that has never seen the light of day!!
Tony Bishop has been 'coaxing' me to turn up to one of the Nationals and as it stands I am looking to take him up on the offer using my RTR Blaze, potentially at Tamworth (although very doubtfu) but defo at Leominster
The Million Dollar Question is.... Is there a way for me to be competitive without spending silly monies for possible use at 1 maybe 2 meetings max!?!?

Well being a standard Blaze 'buggy' model, and not the ST 'truck' model, it will lack a bit of stabilitly compared to the St that 99% of people run, the only difference being it is slightly wider. My recommendation (as you are only thinking of a few rounds to start with) would be to stick with brushed, dig out an old 10th scale brushed speedo for it, and then maybe get some lipos for it. The Overlander batterys from EMS racing are highly rated, and are very cheap. As for tyres, set of Gecko foams, and a set of Schumacher rally blocks will cover you for whatever the track will throw up :D Think that just about covers it!
Get yourself along though, youll love it

Yes, there was a young man at Leighton Buzzard middle of the A final with a Blaze. Assuming you have it setup right, at your experience level and with Bish guiding you along the micro route you're most of the way there. Tamworth always put's on a good show so is definitely worth attending! Best of all, no freezing outside in the winter rain :D

But outdoor racing (even in the winter) is so much fun!! :wub
Gecko Foams is on the list - 32 Shore I've been advised, they'll be on order soon. I'll hopefully have the car running (at a very basic level) at Oswestry Club Meeting on 17th and then I can throw it at Bish and tell him what is he trying to convert me too :p

dig out an old 10th scale brushed motor with it,
A 1/10 scale motor won't fit. The stock brushed motors are quite good. If you really want some speed and don't want to spend tons then get the Pro motor. It's about £12 and is as quick as anything out there in the right hands.

Having seen you racing the cat sx at oswestry indoor mr Jones I know you will love the micro scene. If you can get booked in for tamworth, you would kick butt with a standard blaze with or without wheels. lol.
Get booked in Jonesy.:D

You can pretty much run it out the box and be competitive, depending on how you drive pretty much. I'd have a bit play with it first, and consider changing the steering arms to alloy versions before doing a national. My blaze lasted 2 minutes in the hands of a friend when she crashed it into something, and then I had to wait for spares to arrive before I could try it again.

Aah yes, that makes more sense :D Yes, Ben is correct, a lot of us use 1/10th ESC's in our micro's. Then again, seeing as it Christmas and all you could treat yourself to a nice sensored brushless Novak Mongoose motor and use your favourite 1/10th brushless sensored ESC.

It's funny you should say that as that is the motor that should hopefully be with me shortly and it so happens I have a spare 1/10th ESC!
Thanks for the advice so far, I have got the Alloy Steering Arms but that is about the only hop up so far, plus a Jonesy Orange bodyshell!
I just need to know are the best LiPo / Cells to use know. I have been reading the proposed rule changes on another thread but would like to know what you guys are using?

Any LiPo's will see you good Jonesy, especially if you are only looking at doing afew Nats. Have a look on the Microtech website for some of the TrakPower packs :)
If you are running a RTR Blaze does that mean you have plastic driveshafts and geared diffs?
If so, you will probably need to atleast replace the driveshafts, and maybe look to buy some spare geared diff internal gears for the day.
Any pics? Post them up and ill advise somemore :)

There are quite a few options on LiPos but if you want some cheap ones, try Hobbyking. They do some 1750 2 cells which only cost about £8 delivered.
I'm surprised nobody has suggested any upgrades on the car. The standard plastic driveshafts won't last long and neither will the standard geared diffs. Atomic ball diffs are the cheaper option in this country at about £15 each. Be careful how much you end up spending on it though as you'll soon be up to the price of a used Shark!
Good luck

I only never suggested any major upgrades cos he said he wanted to do 1 or 2 races without spending silly money :)

OK, so I got a little bit excited and splashed out on a Novak Mongoose, got a lovely 12 turn pinion and the car is so quick it is untrue!! Wish I could attend the National tomorrow but not to worry!
In relation to spares I will be picking up in the next month or so:
Internal Gears for the Geared Diffs
Non-plastic Draveshafts (not looking forward to running this car with the plastic ones )
What about wishbones, do they break easily?
Finally, will the shop at the Nationals supply bits that I may need from the 'old' RTR Blaze on the day?
Thanks guys for your help so far and have fun tomorrow at Tamworth

Don't waste money on geared diffs, they don't last 2 mins with a Mongoose. Get the steel ball diffs and steel drive shafts from FTX.
Top and bottom wishbones, shock shafts are the most commonly used spares. Double up on the front shock tower (if you are using the carbon version) otherwise stick with the alloy one and just keep straightening it if it bends. If you are running a Blaze then get the PBS suspension upgrade at some point.

Wim normally has loads of spare (although never the ones I need Wim! lol - but I'm just an awkward bugger). The majority of the spares for the blaze and the shark will fit each other. You've got to remember that the only real difference between the two cars is the width, so things like wishbones and driveshafts.

Jonesy, you defo doing Hereford/Leominster national then?
I'm planning on attend too and might have to convince Bish to do a little pre-meeting testing at Oz in the weeks running up to the National. I can't be turning up all green and novice like :)

nudge bars all the way round would be a good move on the orange beastie Jones!!!
trakpower micro lipo's give loads of power on the mongoose system, mine was super fast!!

How are you finding the brakes on that, as I was tempted by one myself, but advised against it. Actually thinking of getting another SPX and sticking that in for next year.

I'm planning too Phil, looking at taking the car to Oz on Thursday to finally test it. Have a feeling I may need a view bits and bobs though, hence this thread!
Tried the car in the house before and I can't believe how quick they are, can't wait to try it

Just as an update I've ran the Blaze around oz Indoor Track.
Due to having no oil heavier than 50wta, that's what's in it all around and although they were manually timed I was giong about 1 second slower than the CAT SX with it per lap at around 13.5 second laps so I am made up with it. That was also with the RTR Kit tyres and wheels too!!
I'm running the car tomorrow so should see if it stands up to an evening club meeting or not and go from there!!
I'm half tempted by the Caldicot National.......

Not bad, only another 2 seconds a lap and you'll be on the pace :p

Now now Mr Harris as I've stated it was a good starting point!!
Looking forward to letting you show me how it's done in the coming months!!

On a small track like Os indoors or indeed Caldicot I would expect my micro to be easily as quick as a good 10th
