So, now Schumacher may have some competition
http://www.mirageracing.com/news.php?article=677
Is it me or are they only available in 1 compound and also it says good value for your money and then doesn't give you a price.
how many compounds of Schumacher would you normaly use?

3 in the last month
lol, but normally only Yellow, but this is GRP, so there isn't anything saying that they can't release more compounds, it is a start isn't it.

Looking good, lets get the price war going!!
The textured carcas is a novel idea, have to give them a go:)
Don't get me wrong, more makes the better i think. I'm just wondering what these might be equivalent to, as there is nothing like a soft or hard if you know what i'm getting at. And like a few people out there i use the yellow and greens for dry and wet.

This is great news. GRP in Italy have copied the Schumacher tyres whilst making sure that the result was also moulded properly and round. Does anyone have access to rubbber testing at their work? to find our the shore hardness etc versus SCH?
What will happen now (assuming these are good tyres) when we have to selected TWO spec tyres. If these are equivalent to Schumachers then some clubs may choose to ditch Schumachers and have conespikes and Ballistics.
interesting....

Will they be able to break Schumacher's hold on the control tyre series (Nationals, some regionals)?

These have been tested for ages, I'm reliably informed one had very simialr characteristic of yellows. If they are moulded well I'd drop Schumachers in an instant!

me too, they look good, and the textured carcass should stop the muck sticking as easy. I like GRP foams, and their 1/8th tyres are great. I reckon these'll be good.

think some carefull thinking needs to be done before swopping from sch to these new tyres. i know most people have a lot of sch tyres either nib or on wheels that would become obsolete in effect if the control tyre was changed straight away. the tyre does look good but it needs to be at least as good as the sch and possibly cheaper and more durable for people to change

The BRCA could at least start by making these the control tyre for one or two of the Nationals??
I personally think it would be good to even out the Tyres a bit more so each main manufacturer gets one national where the tyres are to be used? You could have Schumacher, Ballistic, Proline, GRP, Losi and then for the 6th meeting it could be drawn from a hat.
Just an idea, i know it's not ideal to not use the best tyres for the specific track but people still seemed to like Kiddy without using BB Pins??
It would be the same for everyone at least.

Must admit i don't know of many if any people using old tyres for Nat's?
It's only a suggestion, but at least that way Schumacher tyres wouldn't be used at just about every meeting you go to....... The pattern could follow with regionals and even Club meets if they're held at the same tracks so people could get used to using them there and obviously re-use the tyres from the National etc.... (just a thought).
Maybe it would be another way to get more money into clubs too if they were to tie themselves to a Tyre manufacturer? That way at least you'd know there was only one/two tyres to use at the club no matter what the meeting was and the club could get "sponsorship" from the manufacturers???

there plenty of place's selling for far less than £8 per pair.
why do they need to develope as the tyre works very well as it is and to say they don't give anything back to the sport, well its only in the last couple of years sch havent run some sort of series or had 1/10th cars around. models expo for example. they provided all drivers with free tyres.
a lot of people run losi rear wheels to go with there sch tyres but don't hear people asking why arnt losi giving something back to the sport? same thing imho.

I am coming at this totally from a price point of view. We do need more competition to drive down the price of tyres. They are damn expensive, even with discounts for bulk buying. If you look up "Cash Cow" in the dictionary it says "See Schumacher mini-spike" ;)

I agree, but the current system pretty much precludes competition.
It does, however, make it easier for both racers and shops to plan the racing season.
I dunno about that Dom, not like you are going to order 500 pairs of Yellow Schumacher rears at the start of the outdoor season is it. You buy stock to go to each race and hope to sell the lot there, and pre-orders too, so I can't see that as a valid argument. I would guess you could easily split the season half and half to allow a new tyre in and force a price limit via the BRCA if needed too.

There are already different tyres for one venue (Tiverton), granted this may not be an issue next year as the venue may not exist, but is it such a big problem to have different tyres for one, maybe two tracks? At least it's let somebody else have a go at the off-road tyre market, rather than one manufacturer having a monopoly over it.

Ok, £7.50 a pair then???
Losi wheels are from a Losi car though so you can't really complain about that - it's a choice of what wheels you use and at least there is a choice.
I'm just glad to see another Tyre that looks like it should work on Grass, Ballistics were a good option but never worked quite the same on dry/dusty grass.......
I just think if for instance Proline had a tyre that worked well on Grass, you would see all sorts of promotions and races organised and further input and development of the Tyres as they're a company that still have an interest in 1/10th Off Road which i don't believe Schumacher do.

its nothing to do with the manufactures, its the actual clubs who decide what tyre to run.
also shops find it hard enough with the current tyre selection and weather to know what to stock, for example CDS got loads of pink BB spikes for kiddy national when rain was forecast then sunday was cancelled thus leaving them with some 40 sets of tyres that will sit on the shelf for god knows how long. thats a awful lot of money tied up. im sure dom's had the same problem at times. you will find that shops just won't have tyre's available trackside and just rely on pre-orders if diff tyres for every meeting comes in. the control tyre is the cheaper option even at rrp of £8 per pair. you ask some of the top boy's how many odd makes of tyre they have sitting in there pit boxes and work out how much there cost!! and if they will ever use them! tr32's are a prime example another how many people have BB mini pins i for 1 have probably 20 pairs that i can't use at reg//nationals

Yeah but like any business you have to accept the risks if you want to try and make money by running a shop - same could be said about any Kits etc, you can't ever guarantee what people will buy can you??
I've got shed loads of tyres i'll probably never use, but Ebay's a great thing for that :D
What about Euro's? People don't seem to mind going out there with all kinds of tyres?? I remember having to take enough of each combination that could possibly work and it was just embarrassing having an entire hauler full of tyres yet we still did it. It's part of competing at the highest levels i'm afraid.
If it was 2 sets per meeting of a nominated tyre that would cost a hell of a lot less overall, you could buy all the tyres in Feb or whenever dates are announced knowing exactly what you're going to use at each event. Surely this would also keep shops stocks right down??

but it would also have a reverse affect, new company's wouldnt invest time and money to develope better tyres if there will be a limit on the amount they sell. some excisting company's would probably stop producing there current tyres for the same reason. i know sch don't keep loads of stock even though there the biggest supplier in the uk.

This has been discussed several times over the last few years and it seems that it would be very hard to implement given the time constraints of nationals.

These new GRP tires are meant to be good, ok? So why are we argueing that we would need loads of different tires for each race meeting, we could wait and see how well the GRP's perform, and if they are better than sch tires then fully convert i say, especially if there cheaper, bout time 1/10th off road have a change in tires for once. They managed it ok at the Euro's back a few years ago?? Selected nail varnish i believe it was once you'd glued up your wheels and tyres.
It's all going completely off topic now i realise but it wouldn't hard to do if for arguements sake it was decided at the AGM which tyres would be used at which national, you could turn up at 8:00 am with the tyres already glued (2 sets), give them to Scruiteneering with your Transmitter for them to be marked in the chosen way, then all you would need to do is take them off (rears only) at the end of the qualifying run to give back in with the transmitter so they have both sets and then when you just select which pair of the two you want to use when you scruiteneer the car??
Can't really see why that wouldn't work!?!
All i was originally trying to say is that i think it's a bit off that Schumacher tyres are used 90% of the time around the UK race tracks when they don't generally support this section of R/C any longer yet must make £££'s just from tyres.

Tyres in off-road are never going to be easy, although I think the idea of control tyres throughout a series (especially in this country) where schumacher/ballistic tyres tend to work on grass, astro cobbles etc etc etc is a good one. This is especially true for club racers and similiar level drivers (not those going to the Euro''s or Worlds.)
I think that this helps the racers on a budget, because they can then run a small selection of tyres (AND wheels, AND foams) which all add up in price. Last season I ran 4 sets of wheels and tyres (including my minipins for indoors) which didnt cost me all that much. I knew that with a spare set of foams and wheels that I could buy some new tyres at a meeting if one set of mine were wearing out a bit. I also know that I would run a set of tyres for more than one meeting (yes that is 12 rounds of racing!!).
I cannot afford more than one set of tyres a meeting because that is around £60 worth of wheels tyres and foams in total!!
As far as these Mirage tyres are concerned, if they look, handle and wear very similiar to schumacher tyres, why cannot we run them alongside schumachers and ballistics on the control tyre list???? Surely then if you cannot get schumacher tyres at that time, you have a viable alternative!!
It also may help push the cost down, but I doubt it.... if they come out cheap at first, then they will go UP in price - just look at the ballistic buggy tyres!!
My two cents

At the Euro's they have a whole day to tech transmitters, cars, etc. At the nationals we would be talking 2hrs tops to mark 240 sets of tires. We are also asking the volunteers in scrutineering to start 2hrs earlier than normal.
Where would all the tires be kept if the transmitter compound is away from scrutineering, say on the rostrum?
Who is going to take the wheels off the cars, because the drivers have to be out to marshal (bearing in mind not everyone has a pit person)?
At the moment scrutineers have 5 mins to take the returned transponders and scrutineer 10 more cars, with this idea they will also have to take in 10 sets of wheels, and give out 10 sets of wheels, you may find them struggling to complete all this in 5 mins.
What happens if it rains and you have 2 sets of dry tires glued up?
Who declares a wet track?
What happens if it rains whilst you are waiting to race and have been through scrutineering? can you change tires? how long will it take? will they have time to re-scrutineer you?
Don't get me wrong, I would like to see limited amount of tires used, however the logistics of implementing it are not easy as you can see.

Careful what you wish for......................
Regardless of my personal involvement, i have always said that the UK national series is much better off served by tyres that are manufactured in the UK. Supply is generally good, can the same be said for tyres that we have used from foregn shores???
This year we have a 6 round series where 5 of those are on similar surfaces and hence use the same tyres. This has to be good for the racer and the trade, i know of people that order a large box full at the start of the season knowing that will be enough for the year - generally getting decent discounts along the way.

This has to be good for the racer and the trade, i know of people that order a large box full at the start of the season knowing that will be enough for the year - generally getting decent discounts along the way.
arent schuey tyres made in the far east by sorex they used to be cus it was written on em years ago when then minispike first came out:o

I would like to see pre-mounted tires with foam for 10th, how many 2WD's don't use the Losi XXX style rear wheel?
who likes glueing tires?
also, has anyone else noticed that recent schum yellows 'rip'
http://www.oople.com/rc/photos/southportnational2007/4wd/imagepages/OOP_3586.html
has been happening quite a bit from what I have seen.
dan's car blew the tyre in round4, the tyres had been on for all the three previous rounds and practice, if there had been a manufacturing defect then i would have expected the tyre to blow earlier, a contributing factor i think was the amount of nails on the straight at southport holding down a patchwork of astro repairs, that said paul rotherham brought back a pair which were clearly a bit thin.
john
Everyone seems to concentrating on the national series here. Surely the nat's are only a small(ish) percentage of tyres sold? With only 120 drivers buying 4 sets a meeting comaired to the rest of the country? Personally I don't care what control tyre is used for which meeting as I don't race nationals - it's a balance of cost and durability for me. I use the same sch spikes both indoor and out without any probs (to save a bit of cash) because it's the only tyre that will do this. If the GRP tyre will do this as well, then it's gonna get my business. It can even be more expensive if the wear is better

Many thanks for helping me out with that John, it is seriously appreciated.. you'l not loose my money thats for sure.
The tyre that blew on me was overly thin, as in you could see little cones all around the tyre where the spikes are. I've had quite a few like this now, hence my previous post.. for £7.99 (ish) a pair, and the amount of times we purchase them it's abit of joke.

A belted tyre would stop the tyre expanding under accleration. I remember and old article in racer showing how you could turn the tyre inside out and then put a couple of layers of gaffa tape on.
So really my question would be has anyone tried this with a set of yellows?
Would/does it work?
Is it allowed? (brca regs)

I got hold of some of the GRP's today at batley - a few were using them as they were in the shops - cheaper too and they include moulded foams (apart from 2wd fronts) which is a bit of a good deal. I think the rears were the most expensive at 6.99, the 4wd fronts about 6.49 and 2wd fronts 5.99 if I remember correctly.
They feel really good too, I'll stick some photos up in a bit

Matt must be an animal, I did 5 on mine and Dan did 1 on them so that was 6 runs and they still finished 2nd in the A, however they were screwed after the final.
I think mine held a decent race pace for 5 runs. I'll see how the 4wd's hold up tomorrow.

Well I ran the conespikes today, I liked them though for slightly different reasons to others!
Firstly the moulding is perfect, each spike nicely defined with an edge. The carcass is well made and of decent even thickness all the way round. They are a fraction smaller than a Schumacher mini spike but only a fraction. So they look good.
Fell wise, they don't feel the same as a yellow, there is more natural rubber in them, like a green Schumacher. As an approximation you could say in your hand they feel half way between a Schumacher yellow and green.
I planned to run mine in the 4th round and the final but in the 4th round my servo packed up. By the final the grass on the track was nailed, it was really biting into hard packed (concrete almost) dirt under the grass. They gripped really well and very consistently between the non grass and patchy grass bits left. What I would say is that the fronts had slightly less grip than the yellow, which I liked actually, maybe more of a balance. The rears are different to yellows, very good drive and as Tom proved good while they wear. They visually look to wear faster than yellows but seem to hold on that bit longer.
Much more to test but a very good tyre, I think they might be really good on drying tracks when you're not usually sure whether to be on greens or yellows. Or a less edgy tyre on grippy grass or astro.
Terry took a great pick of the top profile back to back against a Schumacher, hopefully he can pass it on tomorrow

as you know i race 1/8th and grp tyres are what i use a lot, they wear well and the moulded inserts make a huge difference to the corner speed of the car and the confidence in the tyre, the tyre doesnt deflect as much.
so if the 1/10 tyres are as good as their 1/8th ones they are onto another winner.
in 1/8th they do a couple of compounds A & B compounds,A being the softer, they have the same graining moulding on them on the carcass istelf too so they really hook up well on astroturf too, so hopefully you might get a choice on compounds too?
and as with all grp ones..you get the best moulded inserts going...free!
nice one grp.stick it to schumacher, they have had their own way far too long now..

Ah but of course....
There's lots of stuff I listen to and soak in to the grey matter. Hopefully we got most of it done in the GRP tyre....
I know people will question the cost of the 'box style packaging' and the perception of how much it added to the cost of the tyres to the end user....super_dan and Cockerill (Euro's A finalist) (Did he mention that???) ;). Both of these guys pointed it out...the reality is it was their (GRP's) decision to go with their STD box and the price hike is minimal....they have gzillions of these made anyway.
Thanks to all those who ran the tyres at the weekend and for the feedback you passed on....it's all stored and going back to GRP....

Unfortunately they are very hard to test in wet conditions, as the conditions have to be consistently the same and just damp, as when the track is too wet you will go to a different tire. You've got to remember this compound is to rival the yellow which is used in the dry.
In 4wd I ran my tires in the first 3 qualifying runs. They held up very well and didn't have a noticeable drop off in performance, comparable with other drivers. However, both me and Rich Lowe found Ballistics to offer a lot more grip and pace than yellows/GRP's (he ran yellows in rd 4) this was due to track conditions as there was very little grass left at the end of the day.
PS. Adam you need more commitment on the bank corner, it can be held flat out :D

3* motor in X6
4wd front's & rears have done 4.75 runs each plus 5 laps before each run (4.75 = failed to finish 1 heat)
kit inserts
4* motor in XXX-4
pix on red table are 2wd @ the event

2wd fronts look to faired best.
These have Snee blue inserts in them and look to have very similar wear rates to Schumacher to me.
GRP inserts not quite as good as the Snee's allowing the tyre to flex more hence more wear???

I think the track was quite abrasive over the weekend as a lot of the grass has not recovered from the floods and many of the acceleration zones were on hard dirt underneath.
The ballistics I ran for 2 runs took quit a hammering.
Hard to tell from those pics for me glenn as some look like full spike and some look like theres none left on the grass pics.
As for wear rate, the schumachers for me can get at least 2 regionals before I feel they drop off and even then they're good for at least 10 meets indoors for me so unless the wear is better, i personally won't bother changing
Chris Doughty
14-08-2007, 06:49 AM
dont just look at visual wear. it depends on how they work, not how they look.
schumachers have a massive drop-off in performance once the tops have rounded and then they stay faily 'same' for performance until they are shot completely.
anyone able to comment on the drop-off on the GRP's?

The drop off in performance was pretty minimal as you can guess from Tom's previous comments..
I ran the same set through qualifying and did my fastest run and lap times in round 4.... The car still felt really good on the tyres with no real loss in grip levels...
Bradders then ran my car for 7 mins in the time between Q and F so I bolted up a new set for the final...
As with any tyre there was an initial 'edge' to the tyre in the first few lap until the tyre settled down... there was almost no difference in lap times.
People did seem to think the tyre wore visually more, but the spike is designed to carry on working once the initial edge is gone.. this was the main thing that we looked at.. The spike profile... To keep the best grip level for longer, this will mean the average club racer will get more life out of his tyres....:)
Chris Doughty
14-08-2007, 07:54 AM
again, nice to hear that Adam.
half the 'problem' with the schumacher tires was the fact you got such amazing performance for 5 mins then a sharp drop meant you had to keep going with new ones. (if you didn't want to loose out to others)
if these tires feel more linear in performance degradation then there would not be such a need for new rubber each round.
Lee Martin
14-08-2007, 07:57 AM
yeh as soon as the square edge went from shuies they lost the plot!
When money was tight, I used to use nail clippers on the spikes on schumacher tyres, to square the edges again to bring back a little grip!!
dave g

what adam has said is exactly the same with the 1/8th versions, they are still very grippy when well worn, fitting new ones doesnt make the car faster just a bit more edgey.
i think its the combination of the compound and the rough patterend carcass that helps with the forward drive of them
have you tried them on wet astro yet adam..my only gripe with the 8 ones was they didnt work too well on wet astro, maybe these will.

You wouldn't run Schuey Yellows in the wet so i wouldn't really expect these to work either?
If they're cheaper and work at least as well as Schuey Yellows it's a no brainer - if they last longer that's great but if they're cheper and are as good people will use them i'm sure.

The longer wear time appeals to me, even if they are exactly the same price. Does anyone know if they will be available in mini pin format. A tyre that works good on carpet with low wear would be a winner.
Nick Goodall
14-08-2007, 11:16 AM
To be honest, i've always believed that if a Tyre works it will wear out.....
It would be great if tyres lasted for loads and loads of races but realistically i think the absolute most you can really ever expect to get out of a tyre (that's working) is about 4/5 races without the slightest loss in performance.... they will probably work a bit longer but you can't expect the performance not to drop as physically speaking it shouldn't really be possible if they're gripping?
I'm sure Nats are still the same if not worse as a few years ago, and realistically you were lucky to get more then 2 runs out of any tyre that was used, sometimes 1 run a set (anyone remember Ifmar pins at Kiddy.......).
I think if you can up this to a minimum of 3 runs out of a set of tyres that would still be a huge improvement but overall if they work, i think they will still wear out fairly quickly.

What a nice hand that chap has!
Terry kindly took that photo for me, little Ben had just glued up some new tyres and we were again appauled at the moulding quality, then comparred them to the conespikes which are perfect.
I've had tyres like that from Schumacher most of the summer and kept meaning to write to them to complain, never got round to it though. I hope this improvement in tyres from GRP means they pull their finger out!

The good thing about these is that GRP will probably bring them out mounted on the most popular wheels (B4, XXX-CR, XX 4 ect) for little over £10 which these wheels may not be the best, for for people like me who only club race atm on a fairly tight budget it will be perfect :)

I ran the tyres in 4wd too, there was much less wear on these though the track had much less concrete which might have had something to do with it. I did 3 runs and they pretty much felt as good on the 3rd as the first, I don’t think they go off as quick as the Schumacher’s and grip well when looking visually worn. So visually they might wear faster than a Schumacher but in terms of grip they keep going as long, maybe, more testing needed.
What is good though is that on my first run the track was a little damp after a shower and by the end was almost dry (was one of those days), they defo worked when damp and as proved by times are very good in the dry. So you know when you can’t decide if it’s worth the gamble on yellows yet but it’s close, I think these bad boys are the perfect answer as are better in the damp and seemingly there or there abouts as good in the dry.
From speaking to Adam, pre mounts are very much a consideration with AE/Losi fronts and rear (same fitment) compatability. I think 4wd (fronts) were out due to the wide range of wheel types out there now. Either way he is best to confirm!
Ref Stotfold, they may well be great on the front, however with slims, stagger ribs and now these there are only so many things to try!

I know if i was Schumacher i'd take this tyre as a fairly big complement, i mean it shows that they did get something right when they did their development in the early 90's.
Of all the tyres i have ever run, they always change when the "edge" has worn away - and this is usually a decrease in grip. As someone else said, i have seen people cut fresh edges on their tyres. Never done it myself, but have seen it done - expecially on something like a TR32. I'd be very very surprised if this tyre bucks that trend, but hey i'm open minded.

Well I have had my first blow out with schumacher yellow mini spikes, and gutted comes to mind as the race I was having was one sided (my way) until it happened. 4th race as well, if you include the 3 minute practice.
Still the piece that did come off is 1.3 inch in length and almost 3/4 inch in width. The funny thing is I still managed to finish third but the insert was undamaged, now thats funny.
Any one else have the same problem?

Well I like the tires, and have never before had an issue, so will give them the benefit of the doubt. I have had a reply to an email I sent to them and they want to investigate further and will replace my pair of rear tires. I wasnt expecting that so hope they can rectify the issue that appears to be going on now.

That's probably due to now having a little direct competition in the market place. Up until now they haven't given a flying .....

James, you were being a bit savage with them though when it went, I was standing 6 or so feet away when you got stuck on a hose, gave it full bananas, the tyre balloned, then went pop!
It did make a really cool noise for the rest of the race though, made it sound like an ic car:)

Yes it sounded like an ic and was impressed that the insert came away unscathed, so something schumacher made did work well.
Yes I was annoyed as Andy and I were just starting a good race and win or loose wasnt the problem (as you know i had a good day), its just that it ruined an enjoyable race.
I couldnt fatham why the back end came out, so I rekon the tire went before I slid up the track marker. Still I didnt hit flat out so the tire shouldnt have gone pop, as the marshall wouldnt have touched my car. Its a weird one though as they were new.
Im tempted to try the GRP until schumacher resolve this issue.

I ran four packs through a set of grp's at the weekend, they seem to be very similar to yellows but wear slightly less!! (4wd allround)
VERY IMPRESSED!!

Bang on, well my setup is starting, needs a lot of work, and maybe no is the time to jump ship and move to GRP.
The guys using on the track were saying the inserts are moulded to fit the tire perfectly as well, so that also shows that they are here to stay. Top not,
Dan and the other guys have pointed out that Losi and Proline inserts are not the way to go so now is the time to try it all. Proline are still my favourite but if you dont try you never learn.

Well I sent my rear tires to Schumacher, not really expecting much back but they did send me a set of tires for my trouble. I was impressed with the customer service that I got, so even though there seems to be a lot of bad air about their tires, I cant really compain, as their excellent customer service saved the day.

Used the new conspike tyres on the front of my 4wd buggy today at Kiddy.
Lasted 2 rounds. Pleased with them. On the 2nd run even though they were not at there best, they did not seem to loose any grip.
