Hey up folks...
After running my XX-4 for the first time on Sunday at Marston, I was pleased with the performance, but was a little unsure of what changes to make.
I had put the 'magic' setup on the car, which has been posted before, but was wondering what changes people make to the car for mild tuning (if any)?
I moved the top of the rear shocks in one hole for Rd4 as the back seemed a little loose and bouncy over the bumps, this seemed better, but I had rather a lot of understeer in the final.... (Guess the track had worn by then and the grip gone down a lot)
Also what changes would be made ready for carpet/indoor running on yellow minipins?
I had a novak 6.5R (sintered) geared on 82 (yellow) to 16 pinion. Does this sound okay. The motor was warm to the touch, but I could hold it for around 5 seconds easily without burning my fingers!

Think you're a little undergeared on the 6.5 Sintered, I'd be looking at more like 82/18 or 19. I've not personally run a 6.5 sint. but I run my 5.5 bonded on 82/16.
As for the set-up.... you could also have made any of these changes (one at a time, not all together ;) )
- Lengthened the front camberlink
- Up'd the oil in the front shocks by 2.5wt
- Change to Green front springs (The option I chose)
If you're coming to the rescheduled Kiddy meeting, come seek me out if you have any queries....

Thanks for the quick reply Phil,
What would these have changes done (and is this for Carpet or outdoors?) Could you post your final setup from Sunday including tyres (rows cut, inserts) etc. so I can compare?
I guess it would be helpful for me to post my full setup below to assist:
Front
Oil: 40wt Assoc
Piston: Orange Std
Spring: Green
Arm Hole: Inner
Tower Hole: 2nd Out
Caster Block: STD, not cut, no washers.
Ride Height: CVD's just below level.
One Way Diff (DC Racing)
Clicker Locked
Camber: -1.5
Toe In: 0 deg
Outer and Inner Rows Cut on Yellow Minispike Tyres, Snee Blue Inserts.
Rear
Oil: 30wt Assoc
Piston: Blue Std
Spring: Red
Arm Hole: Inner
Tower Hole: 2nd Out
Link Pos: 8 - C
Medium Wheelbase
Camber: -1.5
Ride Height: CVD's Level.
Batteries Forward
Plastic Diff & Savers
Outer Row Cut on Yellow Minispike Tyres, Snee Blue Inserts.
I am sure I probably could have geared up slightly, although the straight at Marston was not that long, so it didnt make too much difference.
Thanks Phil,
Mark

Thanks Phil...
Seems there wasnt too much wrong with my setup then, just a few small changes. Might try them for the next meeting at Kidderminster.
Forgot to mention internal limiters: I have the spring in the front, and B Spacer in the back.
What difference does the steel diff make on the rear of the car, or is this just for reliability purposes? I suppose the difference in oil here is due to you running the heavier diff and needing a slightly more damped rear end.
Also what difference would the shocks being out one more hole on the tower do? I noticed you changed from Silver front springs to Green ones during the day. What does this do?
Sorry for all the questions, I am keen to learn!
Mark.

I came to about the same thing as you then phil but i had 30 wt rear oil no one way and shorter rear camber link. And 2 degree rear toe in.
As for the green springs i find if i have to much steering so when i go around ocrners the backed likes to step out so changing to the harder green spring reduces this or stops it all together.

Remove the spring and put some washers in there.
Remember to put the spacers inbetween your front wheel bearings when you put CVD's on the car. (they will be included in the packet and are black steel)

I've just got the stiff clicker spring and then tightened it fully. I know some people replace the spring with a small section of "Nitro" fuel piping.
Go with whatever suits you best.

Thank guys for the replies. It seems the main things that are changed are regarding the shocks, and tower positions.
I would have thought that the green spring was close to the silver cut one, since a shorter spring (less wire) is stiffer!?
I would have thought that the longer front camber link would give less turn in and mid corner steering, but more on the way out? I would have thought this was better in higher grip situations, since the front end will have less camber change.

I changed to the longer camber link as the car was really twitchy
going through the back section, it calmed it down.
I do usually run the link in the middle hole in the tower.
The cut silver spring is inbetween the full silver and green spring.
Me and Phil talked about the front end, he changed to green springs and I
went 5wt harder on the shock oil.
Not to knock a product but the Losi one-way diff gives alot more steering than the Apex/DC racing unit as it weights very little in comparisan.
This is from personal experiance and the difference was massive.
With your gearing I run a Peak/Orion 5.5 brushless on 20/82

Thanks guys for all the tips and hints, just need to test them now!
I definately found the back section quite difficult, and the car was twitchy through there. Changing the link here would have helped i guess.
Mucho Appreciated.

Could one of you guys (Brian or Phil) post your starting setup from Marston as well, so I can compare what changes were made during the day?
Thanks

Limitors: Internal Spring
Arm Hole: Inner
Tower Hole: 3rd Out
Caster Block: STD, not cut,1 washers.
Driveshaft: CVD / Alloy
Ride height: Looking along line of chassis, front slightly below rear
One Way Diff (LOSI)

Camber: -1.0
Driveshafts: Dogbones
Ride Height: Driveshafts level.
Batteries: Forward
Diff: Steel
Un-Cut on Yellow Minispike Tyres, Snee Blue Inserts.
At the start of the day I was running increased droop (shock ball cup unscrewed by 1.5 turns). By round 2 I had reduced the droop back to standard (screwed the ball cup back in 1.5 turns). Done to keep the car flatter in the corners
For Round 3 changed to GREEN Front springs. Done to stop the front from "diving" into the fast corners
For the last leg of the final I even tried running the cells in the rear position, to see the effects. It reduced steering as expected and increased drive slightly.

Thanks guys, that really helps things. It seems that Brian made more fewer changes during the day, but ended up further away from his starting setup, while Phil made more changes, but reverted back more to his original setup bar the green front springs. I guess you guys stiffened up the front end with oil and springs since it was a high grip track, which tends to give the feeling of more front end grip.
Thanks a lot for all the posts.
