Here are a couple of shots I got of the new 2008 cars from Atomic Carbon - they look somewhat fantastic, with plenty of custom made parts and both cars feature awesome carbon fibre tub chassis.

The S2 has been around all year in various guises, gradually evolving until a layout that worked was arrived at. This, the pre-production car, is a work of art - losing any rough edges the prototypes might have had and with a swish new carbon laminate tub chassis specially made for this car. A new 4-gear gearbox and cell layout distinguish this car from the prototypes. The car should be available as an conversion for the popular RC10B4 from Associated.

The new 4WD buggy - yet to be named, but let's call it the 'S4 2008', is a revised and once more tidied up version of the car that took third overall in the UK BRCA championship series, in the hands of Chris Doughty.
Jonathan was 'slightly' (very) reluctant to let me take any photos of this car, but suffice to say it features all the latest parts from the Team Associated camp, with new steering designed by Chris Doughty.

haha, I did say 'lets call it' - lucky to get a upturned shot with a two fingered salute! :D

But if were giving details, the chassis kit is made as an upgrade for the B44 and includes custom carbon fibre steering (unlike the corally steering on the S4), new shock towers - indeed nothing looks like it's from the S4 (or BJ4we).
The car in the photo is Jonathans prototype, using carbon & blue kevlar-type material(?) production chassis will be pure carbon fibre.

The production S2 body isn't produced yet

Mike Hudson

It certainly will! So many people are running the b44 this year including me, an S44 conversion will be exetremely popular if/when it becomes available to the public

SHY
09-01-2008, 12:56 PM
Will there be only the "S4 conversion" chassis for the B44 (i.e. with the 4-2 layout of cells) or will there also be a mere "carbon tub conversion" for the B44? I think the latter would be a huge success as to sales. The whole S4 conversion is a bit pricy for many. Why not just get rid of that lexan undertray...

I don't have 100% firm prices just yet, as i still waiting for some costs, but i have put some prices below to give people a rough idea. Again these are only a guide.

B4 2wd upgrade kit - approx £240.00

B44 4wd upgrade kit excludes shock towers - approx £199.00
B44 4wd upgrade kit includes 4mm shock towers - approx £220.00

Expected date when available - April onwards hopefully for both cars, if all our testing goes to plan, but again this date could change.

Hope the above helps :)

I own a s4 (1 of 2 in the states) and I love it but the s44 looks the way to go. Same with the s2. I run a x-6 and I like it but the s2 as well as the s4 and s44 are all works of art in my opinion. I just wish the exchange rate was not so against us on this side of the pond. 240pounds is about $470!!!:o:( I will be getting both cars when available but I might have to get the wife dressed all sexy like and take her downtown to a busy street corner to work up some funds for my r/c collection:D Does anyone know any way around how poor the $ is to the pound? Any tricks to playing the system of currency exchange?:D

AMEN! i cant express it any batter. im the 2nd of 2 that run the s4 in the states. the s2 is making me want to run 2wd. oldtimer stuff is all works of art and in my opinion in a class by itself. but damn that exchange rate. rotflmao:);)

LOL ..... try living here .... most of our racing stuff is the same price in £s as you guys pay in $ and road fuel to get to meetings is about $10-$10.5 a gallon :o

Back on topic

I have to say that everything I have seen of Jonathan's is super quality and very well thought out from an engineering prospective. The price your paying isn't bad either when you consider the lower volume potential and the cost of tooling up for a tub chassis etc.

This is with or without an S4 shell? (couldn't find the "old" prices for the S4 conversion)

Will the std. B44 shell fit this new chassis? Is the A-C chassis the same outline?

How is that thick carbon chassis as to weight? Is that partly why the top deck is removed?

How about making a standard B44 tub? With the std. battery layout? (Not enough room?)

Fantastic craftmanship btw! :D

Chris Doughty
10-01-2008, 06:24 PM
I believe the price includes the shell

the stock B44 might fit if you use a 'short' servo, I don't think this has been tested though. it would also be wider than the chassis.

I believe the chassis is 3mm thick, the walls of the tub give the chassis the strenth so that no top-deck is required.

the Tub mould would not fit a stock B44 battery layout (the chassis is not wide enough).

I am not sure the investment for a tub mould for a stock B44 chassis but in a tub would be worth it. I could be wrong though.

I can't say if the investment would be worth it, but I think I'd prefer a stock B44 lay-out tub chassis over a slim one, as I need to be able to fit the cells in my Yok BX, read too many things about B44s breaking not to have a back-up car:)

Best advice.. dont cut carbon on your own.. ever, it isnt worth it, the crap that comes out of it gets in to your lungs and dosnt remove its self!

Jonathan sends off for his parts to be specially made cut rebated or moulded.

I'll second that! Evil stuff the carbon dust.

Ash, if the carbon you're using is any good you'll need diamond blades & alot of them. Make sure you factor this into the cost. Best advice would be to not go there.

On second thoughts, cutting your carbon chassis could help remove some of those fingers otherwise used for typing pages of irrelevant crap... :p

ive sanded carbon fibre before using a sanding drum but never cut it Im sure i would use a a series of files, dremel, saw's and hammers to cut its only gonig to be small so souldnt take me to long and its only thin material.

thanks for that dave ill get in contact.

I used a dust mask and a pair of gogles. The other option would be to cut it out of GRP then glue a thin layer of carbon fibre on each side so like a carbon fibre GRP sandwich.

If that's true, then me and everyone in my rocketry club are dead.

Fibreglass is way more dangerous than carbon fibre. Fibreglass leaves GLASS in your lungs, carbon fibre just leaves carbon, which your body is made of anyways :D Carbon fibre dust is no different than charcoal, and guys spend their whole lives in coal mines, breathing the stuff for 12 hours a day, before they get black lung at 40-50. An hour of carbon dust isn't going to make any difference when you spend all day breathing car exhaust full of all kinds of carcinogens.

A breather (respirator used when painting cars) and a vacuum will save you from all the evil carbon dust. And the stuff cuts very easily with a hack saw or band saw.
