Hi everyone. Just to ask anyone or the people who will know when the C4.1 going to be out. I think theres about 5 or 6 people who got them. and for the people who are waiting and waiting. I know its all cool to see it winnin and seeing top drivers usein them, but i think its a bit unfair for the rest of us.

So over to u ..........................

The Cat SX3 was being used for half the season also before the mortals were able to get their hands on it and that was only a week before Round 4.

If CML released the car now and it was failing constantly, etc their name would be dirt. Since they haven't released a car in a long time they want it perfect.

The DEX210 was run at Petit 2010 and again at 2011 and still no word on release.

At the end of the day these things take time to get right.

I can understand the need for getting a new release spot on, but it is very unfair to us mere mortals in competitive events (I don't include myself as I am nowhere near as good to make an A final) that some drivers are using equipment that everyone else doesn't have access to. :(

Doesn't anyone remember the old Rally homolgated regulations back in the good old days of the RS200?

Then you better stop racing, or doing any kind of competition :-) They could test it secretly and not race it, but then you get a losi 22.

it isn't that unfair when you think about it - the reason why these 5 or 6 guys get to run such prototypes when us mere mortals don't is that they've proven countless times that they're above the rest to start with... so, B4.1 or C4.1 they'd still whoop your rear anyway ;)

Now I'd rather have them test it fully before releasing it to the public anyway than push a lemon on the market (DNX408 anyone?)

I agree with most comments really. Waiting that little bit longer will mean nothing when we all know the kit is smack on. Its currently being driven by the best drivers in the country...who better to iron out the creases ey?

I'm really keen to see it out in the market aswell though, especially as it reminds me of an oldschool S2 on ali steriods ;)

"silver" schu spikes were withdrawn from an earlier national due to not being commercially available. How is the C4 allowed to race at nationals?

I can see where you're coming from but there are only two items specifically within the 1/10th Off-Road section rules which have any relation to 'commercially available'. These are;

All wheels and tyres must be commercially available
Any commercially available 1/10th scale bodyshell may be used....

And to clarify what 'commercially available' means within the rules, this is;

Where the term commercially available appears in BRCA documentation in regard to racing equipment allowed in 1/10th Off-Road Sanctioned events, it is defined as any item or items being accessible for purchase by anyone and therefore must be or have been available in UK retail outlets in reasonable volume at any one time. There are obviously other times when commercially available applies to our section and these mainly relate to cells/motors etc. but these are dealt with under the 'Electric Board' rules.

The bodyshell we're currently using has been temporarily adopted from a.n.other car to allow testing to progress, so therefore has been previously available commercially at some point in the past. In fact this manufacturer has had previous National success (see The Mighty Chris Doughty (http://www.oople.com/rc/photos/2008national-edenpark/index.html)!!) without any problems in this area.

I know where you are all coming from, I was a customer long before a team driver and whilst you say its unfair that the team have them now, they don’t have them just to spite you, in the long term it’s on your behalf and whilst now racing the car and seeing the buzz created has been a great time for me personally as someone involved in the project from its inception, there have been the less exciting days...

Leaving work at 5:30, travelling 40 minutes to a track so that we could test elements of the car as much as possible before it got too dark. Giving up Saturdays to do the same, in the cold and rain of late winter. Constant emails between the very small group of people involved, hours on the CAD machine for the main designer who can't act without constant, accurate feedback and information which sometimes was given via a notepad, pencil and calculator as well as the on track findings.

Remember, this is a project by CML, a UK distributor who already distribute a hugely successful 2wd chassis which continues to sell very well throughout the world - but on behalf of their UK market, both team driver and customer they are taking this hugely risky but committed plunge. They are not an established manufacturer with endless manufacturing possibilities to hand, it's a substantial investment for them and they need to be certain that they get it right and that takes time.

It is a lot of effort but everyone involved is delighted with the initial outcome and we know the customers will be also, but producing a car that is easy to drive, has support from a team of respected drivers and is very cost effective, isn't achieved overnight. Trust me, everyone is 100% committed to getting this car out ASAP, and that is when it will be out.

Hey,

This is a picture of Jonas Kaerup C4.1

http://rcspecial.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/ka2200611.jpg

Is that an extension on the motor sensor lead that I see over the speedo?

Any one know who makes them? And are the needed for the C4.1.

Thanks,

KRob

Mick,
It's an adapter you have to use with the GM speedo.
They use a different plug into the speedo so is specific to using a GM.
There are plenty of companies that do standard fitment sensor cables long enough to use in a C4.1.
Hope that makes sense.

flipside
21-06-2011, 11:13 AM
I also don't think you need a longer cable than in a std b4, the speedo is more up front, but so is the motor :-) In my cr2 I used the same cable as in my B4.

I think you're reading the bodyshell rule wrongly - correct me if I'm wrong but that particular 'rule' mentions only commercially available bodyshells and is a statement of fact - that yes, you MAY use any commercially available bodyshell.
It mentions nothing about you MUST, or ONLY etc. This rule is either intended as the way I've just put it (to inform) or horribly worded and therefore invalid.

I'll run a coke bottle at the next round to prove the point :woot:

People seem to be getting worked up about team drivers having the advantage with the new, yet to be released, cars.

At some point there must be a disadvantage too though, when the car very new and is a short journey along it's development path I can see at least two potential disadvantages:

Design changing frequently making it harder to get used to the feel of the car.
Spare parts availablity not being that great.

I know some of these issues will be ironed out before they see a competition race, but to a degree there must still be issues with running such a new design.

ok i will correct you. your wrong:lol:. maybe?. i am not sure why you could not run a "coke bottle" style shell, i am all for innovation and trying different theories on shell aerodynamics. however as i read it you must use a commercially available shell. you are correct it is a bit "wooly" in its wording and i am sure an amendment may be on the cards if that is the case.
will try to find out why you could not use a development shell of your own design at an event, which is really the only place your going to find out if it works or not, providing the shell is in accordance with other rules reference holes etc i dont think we should be stifling development.

i have a question. If i was to make my own car and run that, is that fair ?. The car i have is a losi xxx cr which i mid motored myself and i enjoy using it but as its not comercially available surely it follows the same issues as team guys using cars like the centro. With the cost of these cars today i am glad these guys are trying to make sure the car is sorted before it goes on sale. For me, i just enjoy making my own parts.

speaking of rules, i dont think its a good idea allowing the small lipos to be used. What i mean is that lipos should be either stick or saddle and the same size regardless of maker. I am refering to the small lipo used in the tlr 22. Cars have as long as i can remember been designed around the electrics used, not designing the electrics around the cars. I dont expect many to aggree with me on this.

As much as I am dying for a good look at both (I have pre-ordered my C4.1 ) I think the rango will drop first purely due to the fact that they have been developing it for a real long time and they must be very near full production quota. CML will know that the longer they hold out for final 'ironing out' the closer Cragg may get to taking the 2wd Nationals...therefore the bigger the demand as far as the consumers desire for the C4.1. I also feel that due to the fact that the C4.1 is a collaborative project between several parties, that the final stages of design and production will take a little longer than a department in a solo company.

Either way...can not wait to see them both...but C4.1 is going to be epic I feel :wub

As you may imagine, having the motor mass over or ,in front in most cases, of the rear axles gives us a number of massive benefits. The cars benefit from bags of straight line traction, they carry more speed in the corners and generally sit down and play ball a lot easier on british medium to high grip astro etc. The mid configuration negates the pendulum effect at the cars arse end and pushes all the rotational energy of the rear end across the centre of the chassis, hopefully making the cars go where you point the nose (in most cases anyway lol)

Most mid buggys also benefit from 4 gear transmissions that are set up with a neutral idler gear, this allows for the extra gear required for spinning the gear boxes around inside not to effect the out put gear ratio.

In summary, bags of grip, no crazy sloppy arse end :) and rotational mass in the centre of the chassis. If you havnt driven mid motor then get on it, as you can see by manufacturers moves in the past couple of years, its just streets ahead on high grip british surfaces. Hence a lot of buggys being released with both configurations possible out the kit box.

Let's not forget though that Lee Martin still drives MOA (motor out the arse) and he is not exactly slow :), if you find yourself ever on loose dirt then the old school format is still king (as shown in this years worlds)

The C4.1 is going to be a corker so get your pre order in hy

Let's hope so. I'm amazed at the lack of info on this. The CML site announced it in March saying more details to follow and since then nothing, zip.

Sure it'll all be worth it and I guess CML think they don't really need to spend any time hyping it up before the launch given the results.

Yes it is a lot but NO different to a Vega or X-Factory X-6 conversion (before they released a complete car).....and lots of people are running them.

Is the C4.1 also good on dirt tracks?

Thanks

Just need to wait and see when it finally comes out lol

I agree Marc, its a close total price to building either vega or x6 squared. As always the conversion will be mainly targeted at existing b4.1 owners, those who want to create a centro but are not associated owners can pick up a cheap 2nd hand roller, in fact if you actually itemise the b4.1 parts needed to do most mid conversions, people could just order the parts and a centro and away you go. The most expensive individual part (full retail price) will prob be the diff.

Either way I think its fair to say that most top flight conversions are around the same price these days if you already own the transplant car then bonus

Let's hope so. I'm amazed at the lack of info on this. The CML site announced it in March saying more details to follow and since then nothing, zip.

Sure it'll all be worth it and I guess CML think they don't really need to spend any time hyping it up before the launch given the results.

Starting to think the first I'll hear anymore about it is when MK e-mail me to say the kits are in and they want some money!!

Rob

Hi Rob,
We've not confirmed anything with pictures yet as we don't have any of the specific parts finished in production form (yet).

Although I can confirm all the parts are now going through the production process.

All the cars we've run have been subtely different and have changed along the way and there is no point putting anything up about those, other than it is work in progress.
Jimmy has covered the car in some of his race reports though so photos are out there and we've given it an article about every three weeks or so (as it wins another national) so it hasn't been forgotten on the news pages.

Hoping for about 2-3 weeks but obviously that could change.

This is the first time I've seen a project like this being run, and whilst I'm not involved in it directly I am aware of what is going on and it's really opened my eyes with regard to how it's much more time consuming it is then I ever thought it would (or even could) be!!
But trust me - it's worth waiting for.

What changes from the pre-production models are there likely to be?

Some attempts were made to talk me out of the c4.1 because, compared to the DEX210 production model at the Invernational, the c4.1 wasn't so polished. My take is that this is an apples-to-oranges comparison, as the c4.1s on show at the same event were pre-production.

It's apples to oranges, because the C4.1 is a conversion kit for an existing car.

If you already have a b4 with spares and everything, changing to a durango will cost you a lot more, even if the car itself costs less (compared to new b4 kit + c4.1 conversion).

That was my thought. I also wanted to keep the B4 for a dirt track I run at, and the c4.1 for astro.

I am really shocked at the lack of info regarding either the true release date or the shipped spec. Obviously there is a big anticipation for this buggy...but no info is very frustrating...it of course does fuel healthy pre release speculation but also makes it very difficult for some people who may be currently trying to weigh up their first mid motor car....I've spoken to a few recently who have chosen other brands due to lack of info from CML. Now of course the buggy is set to be amazing but alot of us have based our pre orders on seeing the proto versions....fingers crossed we get some info fairly sharpish as I think I speak for a lot of people when I say...we cant wait...come on CML...INFO PLEEEEASE??

Don't see the point in moaning about when the car will be released. This season is almost over and a new car now will make no difference to overall results. Car will be here before the winter season kicks in, do winter testing with the car and shake down for next year.
No point jumping ship and getting a car you will regret later on.

Results speak for themselves so it's defo worth the wait.

Cragg is an exception, but its the rest of the teams results that have jumped up that makes this car interesting (no disrespect to the other drivers, you know what i mean);):D

Seems like a steal at that price! :) if that's the RRP then I'm sure most competative retailers will discount it slightly as well. Although seeing a low RRP does make me worry a bit.....cheaper is virtually never better in my humble experience so my main question would be, what may they leave out or produce cheaply to sell at the low price compared to their rivals....they still gotta make money as well?

Well at least good old TrackSide have been forward thinking enough to put a RRP up online, well done chaps as its great to see some info released, keep the discussions flowing guys and gals, the rumour mill continues to churn :)

It would be great news if a few suppliers offered a deal if you purchased the b4.1 and the centro at the same time, not only would it make great value for us, but would also sell more kits for them. Win win :)

We have already put a pre-order "combo" price on our DMS website for both the B4.1 and C4.1 together......

However the £149.99 RRP that is being shown around we are "reliably" informed by people very high up at CML that it is now NOT a very realistic estimate as to what the RRP will be when it does come out. They had hoped for it to be £150 but as costs have risen it is now far more likely to be higher sadly.....

The truth is, until CML get ALL of the parts in and the fit and function on them all is spot on etc they cannot confirm what the RRP will be, however they are currently informing shops like us that they "expect" it to be around the £170 mark at present which is what our pre-order is based on.....

Nothing set in stone yet, but not much longer hopefully.

Waiting on first production items to arrive within the next 14 days or so, then once they have been QC'd then it will only be a few days after and we should have it all available.

The instructions will probably be the final stumbling block so if people are desperate to get the kits then we could probably release them without any formal instructions. But then it's not rocket surgery anyway...

As for bodyshells. We have those (enough for kits and to be able to list as a spare). We'll get a part number and price sorted and as soon as we have that info we'll get it posted here.

As you can see the car specific parts are now all listed - some are in stock (yes, the shells) - and orders can be placed for anything you think you'll need.

There is a blank set-up sheet and set-ups from the team will appear on the site very soon. (apologies it's not right away but CML obviously have other business to deal with as well as the Centro).

I still can't believe how much work it is to get what 'looks' like a relatively simple project into production.

I doubt the c4.1 will have any influence on the B5 - it'll likely still be rear-motor (though possibly not exclusively), as it will be developed for US tracks. I suspect a B4.2 is more likely, AE being a company that avoids change for change's sake.

I notice on the new c4.1 set-up sheet there is no space for rear toe block, only outside wheel toe. Is that because the toe adjustment is just done using the hub or will the rear toe block get mentioned somewhere else?

KRob
22-09-2011, 02:46 PM
There is only one rear block so there won't be the option to change it.
Further down the line that could happen but all the team exclusively use the standard geometry inboard toe-in that will come with the conversion.

I have never had the priviledge of having an S2 in my hands and looking at the body that closely, but (unless there are a few small revisions/bumps/vents etc) that have changed it looks VERY similair to the bodies the team guys have been using to me (although we were told they would be different)

No markings that I can see for any gear cover etc......

Maybe someone from CML can clarify (Keith??).........

Cheers Darren, probably is the S2 shell then...some extra cut lines would be handy if it does need the cutout, but either way...I love the S2 shell anyway, so would be chuffed if it was!!!

And if they do release a new one I only hope it retains some of the S2 look about it...one of the best RC shells ever I reckon...looks like it's going about 100mph even when it's sat on your bench!!!

Might even make me look quick!! :woot:

As far as I know...

The first shells are the S2 shell we've been running, their arn't any cut lines for the gear cover so you have to do that bit... Also the lower cut line is a bit too high to go all the way down to the chassis, so when you cut the shell out initially leave plenty of extra down there and trim it to length once it's mounted.

It´s in Norway, at Innherred raceway, Levanger. Very cool track, the "wall of death" is actually about 3-5m high, in the film it seems much smaller. Tracklength @ aprox. 250 meters:thumbsup::thumbsup:

This update is more of an unofficial version to give people an update

The chassis' are in production and the machine for the gearboxes is ready to go and got the go ahead today! Unfortunately I don't know at this stage what the time scale is for those.
Any remaining parts to fulfil the huge amount of back orders will be with us this week.
That just leaves the instructions and I've no idea about those  they will probably be rather basic but it's not difficult - heck I made one with no instructions :o

hi
only very very subtle changes such as rear wing mounts, an aerial mount hole in the chassis and one or two small changes

KRob
12-10-2011, 08:50 AM
A few changes basically down to refining the car for production.
The battery retainers will be alloy in the conversion where-as the prototypes were carbon (which are available as an option).
As mentioned the wing mounts have changed so a wider range of wings will fit easier.
The team has used a variety of different brass weights depending upon what they already had, nothing was made for the prototypes - that was make do with what's available where-as there will now be Centro brass options.
The gearbox might look slightly different but it's just cosmetic changes - nothing functional - same goes for the rear wishbone hangers and chassis.

That's about it really, although if Wezzer would pull his finger out we might get something sorted on the shell front...

You'll have received the C4.1 shell that the team were using all season...which is essentially an S2 shell as I understand it!

They are using that one to begin with but sounds as though they have another in the pipeline too...

Don't worry...what you have will be fine! :)

Any other shell we offer is unlikely to have a built in gear cover. To make sure the gears stay sealed it's safer to use the gear cover - I saw some issues at a couple of tracks that have put me off a fully incorporated design.

As for how far forward the cab might be - it won't be in the Bulldog league, and as the rear gearbox is quite high it certainly won't be that low at the back. I'm as keen as other people to see what Wezzer can come up with!

Interesting Keith! The original S2 didn't use the gear cover and as far as I know it's no less protected than other mid motor cars/shells...is there much difference to the gearbox area from the S2 then?

Didn't look very different from the few pics we've seen of them...is the spur higher up in the Centro, or is it more due to the lack of the tub shape with the ali chassis?

All this talk is making me impatient, I know that, looking forward to getting mine!

KRob
13-10-2011, 01:59 PM
Andy, you're right of course. From the pictures I've found the original S2 used the bodyshell as a gearcover.
No idea how the height of the Centro gearbox compares with the S2, but it is certainly wider due to the B4.1 rather than B4 internals. This I reckon would make the gearbox too wide to use just the shell to cover the gears.
But as I mentioned, having seen a few other brands of car suffer with spur gear damage on a particularly sandy track we will stick with the separate gear cover.

blue_pinky
13-10-2011, 03:20 PM
Cheers Keith! Wider might do it...could get to the spur rubbing the shell if it's been moved out by the wider gearbox. Cover is def good belt and braces protection

OldTimer
13-10-2011, 06:23 PM
C4.1 gearbox is the same height as the S2 gearbox, but wider to allow for the wider B4.1 diff.

Re the shell on the S2 some people ran with no gear cover (me) but you can trim the shell and use the B4 kit gear cover and its a nice fit, and handy on sandy tracks ;)

matdodd
13-10-2011, 08:58 PM

Just a quick question, maybe silly but i`ll ask anyway

Will the sc10 gear diff fit in the c4.1, i ask because the sc10 and b4.1 use the same outdrives and same bearing size?

Or will there be an option to run a gear diff as the dex210?

I have a associated gear diff...mine is oil filled...I race on carpet during the winter and it's transformed my b4....turned great in hairpins and is a lot better on high speed sweepers...stops the tendency for grip rolling because the outside wheel still tries to turn as the inside wheel could be off the ground...I find it much smoother overall..I have to stress that our carpet is really really grippy...car feels like your using razor blades for tyres..

Darnit, that scotches my plan - I had a gear diff all ready to go too.

What's the fitment issue? Outdrives shouldn't be the problem, so must be the extra bulk of the main diff body?

I have not seen the new gearbox casings but from one of the three people that have they tell me the body of the gear diff sticks outside the gear diff and fouls the case.

The set-up sheets will change where the weights are so will get the gear diff option removed as well. I have a feeling it was added as it is on the B4.1 sheet - but I can tell you that none of the team drivers use teh gear diff.
Not having ever seen a geared diff myself I am going on the information given to me, but you can trust the source who told me!

Just to carry on from the previous discussions about the gear diff fitting, I was looking at the gearbox case:

I take it the gubbins around the outdrive outlets are the problem? If the gear diff does indeed not fit, just how far off is it from fitting? Would noreargrip's Dremel suggestion be ill-advised?
