View Full Version : Hot Bodies - D2

The D2, Hot Bodies long awaited 2WD buggy has been rumoured for a while, and was finally shown today at the Nuremberg ToyFair. We managed to get some exclusive shots of the car:

http://www.oople.com/rc/photos/misc/news/d2oople02x.jpg

The Hot Bodies D2 features a 3mm alloy main chassis plate with plastic side pods screwed along its length, to add stiffness and a location for the electrics. The alloy extends to the front, forming the required 'kick up' - and all the way to the rear for the gearbox and suspension mounting.

http://www.oople.com/forums/../rc/photos/misc/news/d2oople05x.jpg

The chassis is slotted for traditional cells and uses plastic trays to protect them. 7 slots mean more positions are available, combined with similar plastic trays to the D4 which allow fore/aft movement by turning them 180 degrees.

The car uses 2 piece front and rear shock towers - the same carbon fibre part on either side braced against the bulkhead and main chassis at the front, and a similar arrangement at the rear. You only have to replace half a shock tower!

The car in the photos sports D4 dampers but the final car will use the updated & simpler design of the D4 Worlds dampers.

HB have new metric front wheels - and accompanying wheels from the D4 at the rear using a large Hex just like the D4, so should be able to use Losi style wheels at the rear like the D4 can.

We're getting back to the 90's with all these cars out now - How long has there been only 2 cars to choose from in 1/10th?? Great to see new cars coming out everywhere! It'll be like 1/8th before you know it

I don't know why, but despite all the obvious work that has gone into the car, and the refreshingly different approach to a 2wd chassis, there is just something that I don't like about that car......and i don't even know what i don't like about it!

To be fair i see where Ash is coming from, the shocks being on the front of the tower for one, and the shape of the chassis (with the plastic bits) is very B3 like.....

To be fair though it doesn't matter what it looks like in these pics as we can only really judge it once it's on track :)

I am going to stand on people toes here, and say I DON'T like it....

To me, near the rear of the car, above the battery tray, there is the rear bulkhead brace/mount. This is going to make getting lipo stick packs in much harder, than if it was not there. I also don't like the 3 piece chassis. Yokomo did this recently on their bx 4wd, and nearly everyone said they preferred the upgraded 1 piece chassis. I also don't like the front shocks being on the front of the a-arms, they seem a little exposed to me. The big holes in the chassis are also going to be a big "catch" area for dirt to collect....

otherwise it still looks like any 2wd buggy of late (except the S2 and X6) - i.e. batteries in middle, motor at back, servo at front etc etc.

Sorry folks!

Mark

jimmy

They are photos so it remains to be see how easy a lipo will fit - you can't judge it until we know exactly what the situ is.

Not sure what you mean about the chassis? Yokomo actually went to a 1 piece chassis. The B4 has a 2 piece chassis as do the other popular cars. This has a 1 piece chassis, with side pods for the electrics. So unless I missed something this is closer to your 'ideal' than any other competitive 2WD around?.

After learning the chassis was 3mm, maybe the side pods don't do quite that much for strength? certainly not as much as the B4 etc do on those cars. just guessing here of course but I'd imagine the weight would be more central and lower down - wether it's heavier or not I'm not sure.

Southwell
07-02-2008, 01:46 PM
I like the idea of the cells being lower, reminds me of what everyone did with the b3's back in the day! It certainly looks pretty good, it's almost certain to be a strong alternative to the b4.

them side pods are begging to be cut off and narrowd down !
Looks like you donīt even have to and can just unscrew them, as Jimmy stated and what can be seen on the pics. It would be even way narrower than the 2WD Durango (Prototype). This X-brace at the rear seems to be just fine to mount your electrics upon in that case. Or behind. And then it would be be a one piece chassis par excellence.

Together with the slotted cell tray the CG would be veery low and centralised, could be a rocket on tight high grip tracks.

Slim + fast, would have to be called Slim-Fast then... :)

DCM

on the B3, they didn't ower the cells, they raised the sides, or better clearance, like how they do the fairings on a sports bike.

I am guessing the alloy chassis will bring the weight low, and but the structural rigidity and the pods, more like dirt shields.

it's got nothing to do with how the car looks in pics.
its all down to inprooving on whats out there now.

as for the chassis its along the same lines as all8th scale buggys and they seem to work.

lets see what it performs like on the track (lets hope its soon)

no, on the B3, the cells sat in a channel, so that gave stiffness, they then raised the sides to give clearance for better lean angles

I think Ian's talking about a Mod a lot of us did which was to cut slots out of the bottom of the chassis so that the Cells would sit lower - i've still got one at home with this done!

TBH: We looked at the X-6. Kinda why Hara ran it at Hot Rod Hobbies whilst I was in the states...
The mid engined cars do work better on some surfaces and some tracks. As Hara said to me in J'English: "Maybe here, X-6 best car (as we ran all 3), maybe elsewhere, maybe not so good".

At the end of the day, different cars suit different drivers. I personally couldn't drive a B3 for Toffee. Yet my Losi XXXCR was planted when everyone moved to B4's as their XXXCR's weren't going so well. I couldn't see their problems.

I looked over a lot of geometry and stuff and just tried to get the best of everything in one car... Then add my own little take on it.

No point re-inventing the wheel.. Maybe just polish it a little more and make it smoother!

You can't call the chassis 3 piece because of the side pods. The main structure of the chassis, from front bulkhead to rear bulkhead and back is 1 piece only. The other 2 pieces serve no purpose to the structure of the chassis like the cars you are comparing it with, they're there to hold the electronics and keep the track out.

In my humble opinion, this car looks like a turd. It might look alright without those uber huge side pods, and the 1990 style steering rack and front shock tower. The rear end looks alright from what I can see. I don't think slotting the chassis was the smartest of moves either, what about li-po?

or does the alloy chassis have a kick up ?Think the alloy chassis gives the required 'kick up'. Hotbodies have probably gone down this route because they may not have the nessacey tools to produce a full tub chassis? And/Or produce them cheap enough. Somebody please corect me if i'm wrong? But I know Schumacher don't have the means to make a tub chassis and that is why they won't bring out a 2wd.

It will be interesting to see how it performs on the track, theres no reason why it should't go well, the car looks the part.

Lee

Why does a 2wd car have to have a tub to be successful?

I dont think it does, a carbon chassis with different top decks can be made to be as stiff as required and even change the flex characteristics if needed by changing top decks. Tubs are very expensive to produce in the way AE and losi do which will put off the smaller companies like HB especially if there is no advantage.

if the alloy has the kick up we have to use that alloy thing ... well not that cool.
thats what i thought first! but HPI and HB are related and HPI has many plastic chassis out. i think you dont need more expensive tools for grapht plastc than for nylon plastic. but tools are very expensive anyway

Lee

If they thought a moulded chassis was faster im sure they would have gone for one.

I also dont think HB and HPI are as close as people think, i was told a while ago HB was a seperate company and not at all related:confused:

jimmy

the adverts state: HB - By HPi ;)

The news item states there's a kick up as part of the chassis - so not sure why the confusion? If you want a plastic chassis then there's the B4 or Kyosho etc..

Moose

sure thats what all my shirts say :) HB is nothing morer than the brand name for the racing products
all i wanted to say is that if one company knows about platic chassis its hpi :)
first of all we should wait what is in the box.
and i am not looking for plastic only i just cannot see the point why they made it the way they did. but i will drive the HB and i just want to know why they made those strange things and not that i have to buy a platic car

HB and HPI are in effect the sae company, just 'different' brands, the HPI aim is the fun market where the HB is racing is how I see it.

As for the chassis, material isn't important, rigidity and ability to resist tweaking is very important, I am not sure, as not looked closely, but would hope that the chassis is either sufficiently braced or creased along the length to give longitudinal stiffness, and that the fron kick-up area is braced to stop the front plate bending backwards on impact, if this is the case and they have managed to keep the weight down, then it is an ideal situation, then all you got to fret about is whether it suits your driving style....

I must admit i thought this car would be based on the HPI 2wd Electric Truck that's come out - seemed to be quite a similar design to the B4 but it's good to see Adam do something different!

How long until the kits are actually out though?

2008's looking good again for 1/10th!

Agreed, a car doesn't have to have a plstic tub to be fast.

Over the last couple of days I have chatted with some of the countrys best racers about the car, and they all had positive views on it. I respect thier views more than someone I don't know on an internet forum.

Oh, and Ali chassis seem to be back! Check out the Serpent :) Looks like I might run the 80's tub RC10 until the D2 is ready!

DCM, why would it need a crease? its 3mm alloy.

I don't know what all the debate is about, none of you guys are the designers. Have faith, that whatever any brand does, its been extensively tested and its like that as a result of the test, so don't slate it before its even hit a track!

Some of you guys set a cars reputation before its even gone any further than pictures.. and others listen.. FFS stop it.

It is great to see something a little different out there.

I am not sure what the hell people are on about with the looks of it ..... who the hell cares what it looks like naked .... when it's being raced it will be fully dressed so before we say ugly lets wait till we see it in it's party dress.

I think Adam should be congratulated for not doing another clone which seems to be all to common these days.

If it's not a decent car I'd be very suprised and I say the more choice the better as not everybody likes the same driving feel. This car will suit some people far better than most other cars, other people will think it drives like a shed .... that's just life!

I like the car for the fact it has obviously had some serious engineering thought applied and the fact that surfaces like grass and astroturf will ahve been considered at the design stage not as an after thought.

Looking forward to seeing one go on a decent off-road track.

Am I going to be putting my RB5 up for sale, no ..... not a chance. Am I going to slate a car that has not had a chance to show what it can or can not do, no.

Can't this be put in the hot bodies thread? As I keep going to the wrong one.:eh?:

....I say, lets wait until Adam bring one to a track and kicks all our arses before people slate it!!
And who says ugly can't be beautiful? Hasn't everyone been looking for something different for the last few years? and now its here, everyone hates it!?

There are some things i like, and some things i don't like the look of - but it's always hard to tell from pictures. Don't think you can say a bare chassis looks ugly, need to wait for a shell to say that really.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the B4 geometry is nestling in there somewhere as well :eh?: but let's be honest, on the whole for most people it works, so why not.

The thing i find very interesting is the choice of assembly/materials. Although there is a definite up turn in 1/10 off rd, there still seems to be a bit of a resistance (and oddly from the bigger companies) to invest in mould tooling. Aero and X-fact are relatively small companies compared to the might of Tamiya and HPI and so you'd maybe expect their choice's to be the direct opposite to what they have been. It's all good though.

DCM, why would it need a crease? its 3mm alloy.

There are all sorts of alloy out there dude, for different applications, some are soft, some are hard at resisting change, some are soft and require heat treating after to harden the alloy structure.

So I guess it all comes down to material choice and post forming/stamping process that will dictate it's overall strength and rigidity.

It is like Carbon fiber, there is CF and then there is GOOD CF. Also, if you lay p the good CF and use an autoclave to cure it, is makes it better again.

Yep, got what your saying, makes sense & its good advice to someone considering making parts of their own, I realise that you certainly know your stuff. Do you have doubt that HB would test & use materials above par for the purpose? I don't think I would doubt that, especially not at this stage anyway.

DCM

I doubt it to, but even the stiffest material could be helped by a crease, take a tip from the Nitro chassis makers....

Oh, you mean clones like the D4 and their 12th scale onroad car?

I was not trying to point the finger at HB for cloning cars ... mearly pointing out that there are quite a lot of similar cars around at the moment in terms of weight distribution and geometry.

To my mind this is a bad thing as it removes the ability of a driver to choose what suits him best. Think back a few years and the Losi XXX and the B3 where classic examples .... totally opposed dynamically and you'd find some people would prefer the B3 (I was one) and other prefered the XXX, it was all down to their personal preferences. The 2wd's today are much less different in handling terms, although there is still some spread and thus some people like the B4, other the Losi and others the RB5 which sits in the middle.

The situation is much more of an issue with the 4wds which all seem to have fairly similar geometry and weight distribution straight from the manufactures, with the exception of the ZX5-SP which is why that is my choice, it suits where the others don't (having said that Gaz Stanton's Yok BX seemed good when I drove it).

All I was trying to say is that choice is never a bad thing!!!!!!

The HB D2 (or whatever it will actually be called) looks like it should be an option well worth considering, just have to see how it goes on the track ...... well in the right hands I'm guessing.

RogerM

I must say as a design engineer I have to agree with DCM.

Since they are probably stamping the chassis plate to form the kick-up and cell cut outs I am suprised to see there is no raised material anywhere to give it longditudinal stiffness as well as improved torsional stiffness.

It might be the case that the edges of the chassis are slightly bevelled upwards where the side guards attach but we can't see it in the pictures, that is what I'd do as you don't need a dirty great step ... any upturn would be of benefit.

Micha_MX4

Roger,

I'm a design engineer too (if you check my city, you know at which firm
oooo ...),
probably the 3mm thickness alone gives an huge amount of stiffness.

If you chose a material which allows to bend the edges in the manufacturing
process without producing small cracks it has to be softer.

I guess they went to a highly alloyed aluminium, very hard but allows no
small bending radiuses (sp?). the 3mm thickness together with a higher
E-modul gives the strength

RogerM
09-02-2008, 10:37 AM
Micha, I know what your saying ...... I am assuming that the kick-up is stamped in .. which would suggest a certain range of materials (or a certain other range with some post forming heat treatment) which would make it possible ...... although as you say not down to a very small radius. I was actually thinking something like a 30 - 50mm radius (internal) and only lifting the top surface by 3mm or so above the main surface using that bend radius. You wouldn't want too much of an angle or else people would complain about not having a flat enough surface to mount their electrics off.

Just thinging out loud an making the assumption that the material chossen would be simialr to that used in the HB nitro cars.

Does it need to be stiffer ..... very difficult to tell from a picture .. LOL :D

Let's see, a low profile servo in the front, 7 slots available and 5-cell packs coming on strong this year? Must be simple enough to mount todays micro electronics along the center and replace the plastic side pods with a lexan undercover. Maybe bolt on low profile vertical carbon braces for rigidity instead.
It would be as narrow as my converted ultima (about the same age as the hornet mentioned before).
