I want to convert my MR to brushless, but on a budget as it'll not get used full time but when i do it'll be mainly on dirt &/or used as a spare car.

I'm looking at the Fusion Exceed 10.5T combo, no fan (easy fit under MR shell), sensored, quite a good deal in my local store but concerned it'll not be quick enough ! (run SP 7.5/SP GT LPF in my x2c) or..

HobbyWing Ezrun 60A/8.5t combo, been advised the esc is 32.2mm tall inc. the fan so in theory will fit under shell (not convinced it is that tall, with the fan tbh), otherwise good price, prog. card included (unlike the Exceed..), sensorless so unsure how suitable for racing ?

Any thought ?

I have been running the ezrun 5.5t combo in my x2c since the summer and it fits fine under the shell. Most people I have seen with ezrun are using the 5.5t rather than the 8.5t

At Coventry which is a fairly fast track I run 23/80 gearing and it's as quick as most people who run 6.5t motors. I'd probably gear down 1 or 2 for tighter track or indoor though. It never gets to hot either which is a bonus

The only other settings I changed was punch to number 2 and lowered the motor timing down one from std

I've been really pleased with mine - I've just bought another one to put in my truck for this season

Dan,

The ezrun won't fit under the shell with the fan on. I took it off and taped it to the chassis. Still worked well and I didn't have any issues with heat. I used to run the 120 speedo and 6.5 Orion motor.

ezrun's are fine and work well, i do know that the 13t and 9t are delta wind but the can maybe 540 size on the outside but it's a 380 really.

Yeah, it seems the 3650 series ie, any motor which is " .5" is a proper 540 core & the 3650s series ie, 9t, 13t etc, like you say have 380 cores.

Luniemiester, you say the esc fits but not with the fan it would seem, are you running with the fan off ?

I would probably choose the 8.5 over the 5.5 as, a) it's only a MR & i've of heard of outdrives & other bits being chewed up running lairy motors & i just want a quick but reliable set up & b) it'll be used on looser surfaces (otherwise i'll use the x2c) so a 5.5 will be overkill imo.

Aplogies, I misread your most and see u want to run in a madrat - I though u were going to put it in the x2c

I can go the track today and run mine with no fan just to see how hot it gets but it's normally ok in 2wd anyway

I'd still get the 5.5t. It's cheaper than the 8.5t anyway and you always turn the power down on the radio if you want

You can run ezrun's on their side, sits very low then. Bulletproof speedy..

That would be interesting. According to HobbyWing, the 60a esc should only run down to 8.5T offroad but 5.5T onroad:

I just thought it may be pushing the esc a little to be running the 5.5T motor combo offroad, certainly without a fan anyway...

Bugle: Are these esc's flat sided enough to stick down on their side ?

I read that but then on retch the user cobra (us hobbywing guru)says they are fine. I've used mine with no issues. I probably wouldn't run the 5.5 if it was going in a 4WD CAR THOUGH

I have been running EzRun 60A / EzRun 5.5 combos in my Bmax and XX4 for a while (in high grip conditions; Kampenhout Belgium) without any problem whatso ever; gearing was always around 9.0.
I also run XeRun in my other cars and found the 5.5 comparable with a Novak 6.5 regarding power and speed.
And you never have to worry about the sensor lead (less wires to tidy up)

It's slightly under rated, I initially had a V1.1 running in my B44 with 5.5T without any problems, then I got a V2.0 and found it cut out after a few minutes with the same B44/5.5T. What they did was lower the thermal cutout temperature from 90 deg C down to around 60-70 so after disabling the thermal cutout on the v2.0 it was fine. I am running a fan though.

From the bottom of the ESC to the bottom of the heat sink is flat, the heat sink slightly bends inward. I just put the tape on the side of the case and a bit onto the heat sink and it secures fine.

The Ezrun combo is tempting (still feel uneasy that 5.5 isn't a bit too much for esc/2wd offroad) but undoubtedly a great budget option.

Part of me thinks sensored is better though (i guess it must be, lol) & so i also considered buying:

HobbyWing sensored 60a esc: http://www.giantcod.co.uk/xerun60asd-brushless-competitive-p-405855.html

(I don't think a prog. card comes with it but i believe my Speed Passion LPF card will work with it)

And a Speed Passion Ultra Sportman v3.0 8.5T:
http://www.modelsport.co.uk/speed-passion-ultra-sportsman-version-3.0-sensored-motor-8.5r/rc-car-products/366938

or at a push a 7.5T: http://www.modelsport.co.uk/speed-passion-ultra-sportsman-version-2.0-7.5t/rc-car-products/36285

This totals approx £95-100 posted. This gives me my sensored set up BUT this esc is bigger than the sensorless 60a esc supplied with the Ezrun combo & would only fit under a Mad Rat shell on it's Width (36mm) at a push, may even have to raise the rear shell mounts a little.

The Fusion Exceed Race 10.5T comes in at approx £120 with a prog. card. Easy fit under the shell & sensored but only 10.5T. Or maybe the 6.5T Pro with prog. card at £150 ish.

I'm thinking out loud posting this lot lol, but feedback/opinions always welcome :D

unsensored brushless are a little lumpy on start up as the speedo has to kinda guess where the position of the rotor is, but having said that that is about the only downside, the upside is there is no sensor cable or board to go wrong.

i started out in TC with a 13t ezrun system and up til a week ago had the 9t one as my back up, which had some pace same as this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ezrun-Combo-B6-60A-ESC-v2-9T-4300Kv-brushless-motor-p-card-1-10-RC-car-buggy-/170704917616?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27bece5470

Slight change of choice, i now have a SP GT2.0 LPF esc & a SP V3.0 comp 8.5T motor on the way. Quite handy as i run this esc in my x2c so could determine whether it would fit under a Rat shell with the fan on, which it does though i've raised the rear shell mounts up 3.5mm to give req'd clearance
