View Full Version : Leccy 8th buggys

I guess it belongs in the 'smelly thigns' section - since it's a smelly thing thats gone clean.... but who's thinking of trying some coverted 8th electric buggy if it's allowed at certain events in the future?

there was talk of a class at the next neo race, and who know - if it catches on a little then other big races might allow it.. not sure it would work against nitro buggys, I guess it would need its own specific class.

I just wonder how it would develop if it actually caught on properly, because I imagine a scaled up 10th buggy (obviously made a bit stronger) would kick any 8th scale buggy to death on a race track. but that's just a guess :)

I am tempted and it would make it more accesible to people, as tracks won't be constrained with noise regulations and limitations on use cause of it.

I'm looking at getting an RC8 with Neu or Novak motor setup. Been reading into it for a while. People are running monster batteries (some guys run 2 x 11.1v 8000mah packs in parallel which gives massive run times and incredible speed) and I've seen one compete at club level very successfully against the nitro's. It's expensive though!

http://www.oople.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gifThere are two things missing from those clips, the sound and the smell, undoubtedly quick but how sterile and boring is that?
I appreciate what DCM is saying about opening it up for those clubs with noise restrictions, but I'm not too sure on any other enviromental benefits. Manufacturing and disposing of any battery presumably has consequences that are probably equal to running nitro.http://www.oople.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif

I find driving a car ON MY OWN quiet and boring also - that's what this guy was doing.

But like I said to phil at neo buggy when he said the exact same thing as you - nitro is far quieter and less sociable. why? well you can't hear anything but an engine. At an electric race you'd get cheers, heckles and comedy. That's what I think of when I think of electric off road. The HUGE nitro races I've been to seem a heck of a lot less sociable and near-silent (when you take away the rather obnoxious engine noises).
The big electric races I've been to, have sometimes been mindblowingly alive with sound - one that sticks out is Neil Cragg racing at the Euros in 2006 in Austria, with a large UK team doing verbal battle with a large austrian crowd, it was ace :D

probably totally wrong there, but that's my experience.

A lot of tracks have usage restrictions due to the noise, the two local tracks for me, one track can't even start an engine before 10am, the other has had to errect a big fence to help reduce the noise.

My local buggy club (if it was big enough) could run the 8th scale elec conversions, but not Nitro, due to the noise. It is more an enviromental as in noise that stops clubs rather than the battery disposal, although LiPo is more friendly in that respect.

http://www.oople.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gifI'm the first to confess that my rc racing is very limited travelwise and and I haven't experienced the large scale meetings that most on here have.

Sadly though I'm a true dinosaur, a child of the 70's, and I just love the sound and some of the smells of different engines. First experience in the late 60's was travelling in the back of my friends Dad's Chevrolet Camaro RS convertible listening to a small block Chevy on open pipes. Once I got mobile it was screaming Japanese two strokes followed by big bore four strokes.

We're still sociable at our club, there's friendly banter on the rostrum and a barbeque at every meet once the racings finished. Sadly I can't vouch for spectator participation as our racings not good enough to draw a crowd!

I shall never say never though and if electric is the future of 1/8th I'll probably get drawn in. The up side would hopefully be the run times and less maintenance on a motor as opposed to an engine.

I'm not sure they'd end up allowing 2 x 11.1 v 8000 mah lipo's for racing the same way as your not allowed anything bigger than a .21 in a buggy.http://www.oople.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif

Got to be honest i started work on a 1/8 electric buggy last summer, got a base car and most of the electrics, but other projects became more pressing on my time (S2 & Atomized B44), and i sold the buggy and most of the parts.

But it has been something i have been thinking about again during the last week, and now with Novak getting on board, its seems things are moving along nicely and becoming a little more mainstream.

So S8 anyone

I think some people like 8th scale BECAUSE its nitro, the same way people like motocross because of the noise, smell sound, can you imagine electric brushless motocross bikes? now that would be weird!

I really love electric racing, but I also absolutely loved racing a nitro car at the Neo last year, the fact it was nitro was half the fun.

I do think electric 8th scale does have its place, I think it could be very cool, but I think they should still keep servo brakes, that is another fantastic thing about 8th scale buggies, the brakes are awesome, and nice mechanical mechanism that can be tuned and played with.

jimmy
26-03-2008, 11:25 PM
I don't think it's going to replace anything but the idea of massive jumps and electric ease & power all built into a near bullet-proof car is quite appealing. Agreed on the brakes, not sure it's practical but the 8th brakes look cool! I was too slow with the camera, but tom did a nice nose- wheelie into one of the corners, back wheels right in the air.

I was just about to say, and I have pleaded with Tekin who are looking at it, to have a facility to keep the disk brakes and not the artificial brake on the esc (plus it would take a bit of strain off the ESC)

I love 8th scale, but unless you got a pit bitch, you are kinda struggling to race nitro, so brushless overcomes that.

with regard to the brakes, you just need a y-lead to split the signal, or use channel 3 mixing with channel 2, and just dial out the brakes..... disk brakes are just far better.

They did try an electric mx bike chris. It was very fast and light, but as you say, it never had that nice 2 or 4 stroke noise so it never took off (and it was bloody pricey). I like the idea of an 8th leccy car and would be interested in giving one a whirl!!! Bit more robust and loooooonnnngg runtimes apeal to me

The only reason we are not all riding electric motocross bikes yet is because the technology isn't there yet. The logistics of running and charging electric bikes are the limiting factor, not the fact that people would miss the noise (although I'm sure a few will!).

There are electric off road bikes being developed and they are starting to be seen in places but bang for buck it's not quite there yet.

I personally believe brushless buggies are the future whatever the scale. They are clean, easy to maintain and easy to understand. You don't 'need' 2 x 8000mah packs to make em run, these guys are extreme examples but you do need more volts than on 10th scale.

Jonathan - I would like to be the first to order an S8 please mate

Its early days yet, but things like length of race's / finals etc would be handy to know so you can build the car around the lipo you are going to need, been looking at a 30c 4s (14.8v) 4500, i understand that would be good for 10-15 minutes maybe.

I will bear you in mind Carl

The brakes thing is fairly easy I guess - the Schumacher Menace GTRe 'thing' had a free wheel system via a one way bearing that decoupled the motor on overrun so that you still had a mechanical brake. Perhaps when you do the initial setup on the esc you could set the full brake position at 100 percent then turn brake end point down to zero. That should make a fwd and no brake set up - or am I wrong?

Perhaps a heat of J82 cars would be an easier solution -although not as tough as an RX buggy.

I love the idea - mainly just the thought of a reallly strong robust powerful 1/10th buggy I suppose - Racing on the 1/8th tracks would be awesome but you could also run them on a lot of the 1/10th Tracks!

Just imagine the jumps and huuuuge air - can only think how cool it would be and for someone that's only ever raced electric it saves a lot of hassle / time / money / maintenance plus not having to start off learning all about engines and how to tune them etc....

The other thing for me is how many people fail at 8th races due to cuts?? In 1/10th it's pretty rare to drop out other then breaking your car (which usually is driver error) so i guess that part could be more appealing to some people too??

You could still maintain pit stops if you had to change cells at least once in a race or something too!

Nope brushless is much more cost than nitro. Just for some decent lipo cells alone you are talking the same price as a top notch engine, then add a motor and ESC. The idea of pit mates is something I think that makes nitro good for the social side. You are forced to make friends, especially when you do big meetings with christmas tree finals and you need 1 person to marshal your point and 1 or 2 people pitting for you.

I have meet many people in RC this way when people in my usual racing crowd are busy pitting for others, it just forces you to socialise with people you wouldn't ordinarily. But electric is quieter, so has the social side there.

But yeah, more cost, a lot more. But you get simplicity. Engines are usually good, about 80% of the time, but the 20% of the time they cause hassle it gets REALLY frustrating. Electric 10th is just too weak. You can imagine at a track like the Neo, something nice and big, you would need at least a 7 turn motor to match the speed of rallycross. And at that speed the smallest scrape with anything would snap anything in half.

So yes, electric in 8th scale buggies seems the future. It's certainly not new, a guy has done it down my local club for years now. It's just getting popularity to race on a bigger scale. If people are interested I say start converting buggies, so we can start racing :)

I'm with Griff on the no pit stop thing ...... that is the reason I had to stop racing 1/8th ..... no pit crew meant it was about as much fun as doing a full days work at a job you hate, going to the dentist for major work then going straight into another full shift at a job you hate even more than the first one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved racing the 1/8th cars but it is totally impossible to have a good day if you show up on your own ..... spend most of the pre-race meeting trying to find somebody to help you then having to deal with somebody different who doesn't know your car each and every meeting!!!

Just made it feel like work too much :(

Leccy 1/8th best of both worlds..... ????????

Id be very tempted by 8th leccy. The main reason for me not running Nitro is all my work is done in the kitchen - and I wouldn't want to work on a Nitro car in there like I would need to. Leccy changes this.

Motocross bikes sound cool though, especially off the line when there's 30 of them - I have to say Nitro buggies reallllly don't do it for me noise wise - they're more like Bee's rattling around in a tin - nowhere near as nice as the old 125, 250 and 500 2-stroke crossers - i still love that sound now!

Also with nitro cars, i hate the way the fuel just covers one side of the car and all the sh!t sticks to it. Ill probably still have another go with them in the near future even though 10th is so much faster and better in every way.

usual motors we race with, 5.5, 6.5 brushless.

Totally agree chris, it would be good to compare a 10th scale laptimes to the 8th cars at the neo. I just imagine you really cant get it wrong with a 10th scale off the big jumps otherwise it would be game over. 8th scale ar amazingly strong:thumbsup:

great to see you guys on the other side of the pond looking into this as well.

I managed to pic up an already converted Mugen MBX5 to run. Its setup as it came to me was:

- Mamba Max ESC modified to use external BEC, Holes in casing, and Fan
- Neu 1512 2.5D motor 2050Kv motor
- Maxamps 6000mah 4S 14.8V pack
- RC Product Designs Conversion
- Hot Bodies Center Diff (to mount with conversion spur gear)

With this setup, I was able to get alittle better than 20 minutes of Hard running on the car. Setups that would be used for nitro worked well on the vehicle.

Prior to selling the vehicle (going with an RC8 to convert now) I changed out the battery with a PolyRC Enerland cell based 4900mah 4S battery pack. This is a 25C battery that I believe uses the same cells as the trakpower 4900mah pack . Also nice that RC Lipos the distributor for it has free worldwide shipping.

Anyway, with this lipo, which is much lighter than the maxamps, I was able to do between 15 - 22 minutes of runtime, depending on gearing and wheel slippage.

Since that time, New developments have occured. The Castle Creations Mamba Monster ESC is on the way that allows up to 6S use, and uses the same software that took away the cogging on the Mamba Max ESC we experienced with the Neu motors. With a 6S setup using lighter and lower mah cells, electronics will run cooler and you can use lower KV motors to get the same performance. Also, you get longer runtimes relative to this.

Novak is also releasing there own line of conversions for the various vehicles. Albeit, the 1/10 scale trays are used.

RC Product Designs makes conversions that are bolt in, and allow usage of the longer 160mm packs based on Enerland cells.

The performance of 1/8 scale brushless is simply amazing. With the way our tracks are out here in the USA, I think this will probably be where people gravitate towards.

As for costs, TonyScrews made a nice little chart, and the costs after common items you need fuel, etc for a nitro the prices were pretty close.

With the new Castle Creations Mamba Monster ESC and future motor combo being priced at $300, this will drop costs significantly where 1/8 scale electric buggies will be cheaper than nitro counterparts, especially as you don't need to rebuy fuel and only in reality need 1 battery with a X number of Heats, 1 main format (say 5 - 10 minute heats, 15 - 20 minute main).

Attached is a pic of my conversion when it came in for the MBX5.

I think the centrifugal clutch is for Nitro guys coming to electric, rather than 1/10 electric guys going to 1/8 electric.

I think a slipper clutch would be of more use to get rid of some of the grunt the Neu motors produce ;)

Thanks Dunc (I don't do reading, I like to look at pictures LOL)

Slipper would be very cool, I like that idea.

A QC battery might also be usefull for those 20 minute mains, although you may need some kid of industrial cooling, a heatsink in the shape of a Nitro head would be tres cool!

Plus they also run bump ups so you wouldn't have time to charge in between runs so your almost definately going to need 2 batterys.

The new Mamba Monster is a 1/8th electric specific speedo with a decent fan and heatsink built in, some guys have broken the fan and carried on using the speedo with out thermaling it.

I don't plan on using it on the limits it can do ie 6s, but then again :woot:

The Neu 1509 was from Impakt RC which i believe is part of Tekno and i don't think there is a UK supplier for Neu, and the Monster is from RC Monster once the rev2 versions are released.

Trakpower now import the Mamba stuff so contact them, they will also be able to fix you up with suitable lipos.

They are curretly looking at providing a motor suitable for 8th electric.

I got my neu from eflight.ch - its in switzerland and the neu motors are made to order so there will be a lead time.. considered to be the best though..

Any questions PM me...

All this info and more will soon be in a review of a Hong Nor brushless conversion for oOple ..

Purely from an outsiders point of few (well an outsider in as much as I've only just come back into RC) I'd jump at the chance to do this class if it became big enough.

I love the 10th scale off road but the little experience of rallycross I have had was great, but the noise, oily mess etc is a little bit off putting. I was looking for something that was a little different to the already noisey and oily Motocross so for me and i'm sure many others 8th scale electric would be great fun.

I'm certainly going to be watching this development with interest and if it takes off i'll be putting my orders in.

Is the compro actually waterproof?

In terms of the Novak stuff I prefer around 2000kv for 4cell so nothing that suited for me.
What have you been running yours on - 3 cell 11.1v?

There are going to be an awful lot more suitable speedos available soon as I know at least 3 companies that are working on them.

I don't why Novak have gone down the high K/V route. I've been running 14 NiMH cells on a HV4.5 - so absolutely loads of revs - in an E-Zilla. The top speed is very high. I have only used it for bashing, so probably haven't really stressed the ESC, although I have lapped a track without any thermal issues. As Novak says the HV4.5 isn't suitable for racing. But I would have thought the 5.5 / 6.5 would be pretty good with appropriate gearing, although they are both way over your target of 2000K/V. Why are you thinking 2000? Perhaps this would offer smoother bottom end power delivery than a low geared high rpm set up...

If using the Novak motors, then Novak supply their own heatsink motor mount that bolts to the original engine mounting slots via an (included) adaptor plate.

If you want to use Neu or MTroniks motors or whatever, then you are best buying a proper motor mount for your car from someone like Mike at RC Monster.. That way, you can mount the Novak motors too! (and the look bling) :)

Answer-RC-Pete
07-08-2008, 08:10 AM
In terms of motor mount the vast majority are a replacement for the centre diff mount on one side - basically extends out to allow the motor to mount. This is how the RC Monster and various conversions are done as well as the Caster. The only diference in layout tends to be that some have the motor to the rear of the chassis and some to the front to give more room for the cells.

The Novak and Tekno systems use a motor holder that clamps the moptor and attatches to the chassis in the same manner that a nitro mill would do.

Its the R1 pro fitted with a 25v 2200uf cap and i run a fan onto the solder posts as these are the heatsinks, i think with holes drilled in the case it maybe more upto the job.

But its always in the back of my mind that its a 1/10 speedo running on double the voltage and pulling a heavy car. Were as the Monster is designed from the ground up for 1/8 cars, and the guys now using the rev2 speedo's are getting good results.

There a good thread on RCtech about using the R1 in 1/8th which proves interesting.Seems that the Fets are 30v so safe in that sense.

http://www.oople.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gifAccording to MGM the Compro is available in a waterproof version as most of their esc's, those that have them rate them very highly. They are expensive compared to the Mamba but with our weather if I can get a waterproof one I'd prefer it.

I went with the Tekno conversion as it retains the clutch and mechanical brakes which will presumably mean the esc doesn't have such a hard time. I realise that a lot of people will say why do you need a chassis just buy a motor mount and battery tray but I liked the idea of keeping the brakes & clutch and as the 8T RR donor vehicle is brand new the unwanted parts will go in the spares box for our nitro 8T's.http://www.oople.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.gif

Nice article in this months Radio Race Car International. They've put a HV6.5 in an RC8 using the Novak conversion. They raced it in Coventry, sounded like it ran well, running along side and just pipping the nitros. Comfortably managed a 10 minute race with two Reedy 5000mah LiPos. The conversion sounded pretty straightforward, a dislike being the motor fan clashing with shell. They got round this by applying heat to stretch the shell out a bit.

in large scale oval we use a 1/8th rallycross style car on road tyres and a salloon style body. As luck would have it 99% on the people racing use one kit which is the ftx street racer.
last winter i set about converting one of these to brushless and do some testng with the intent of racing it this year in the series against the nitro,s.
i know rallycross and oval are different but in oval you are on full gas more than off so the draw on fuel is high.
so with loads of data on pc from years of nitro cars racing and a venue to test at i started testing. ive used different motors, speedos direct drive, clutch and speedo brakes and mechanical brakes. my goal was to match the speed of the nitros not to be faster all before the series started.
findings:
1.speedo brakes had big effect on my run time.
2.direct drive with the pinions available albeit hardend lasted about 10 runs.
3.anything less than 4cell lipo everything got to hot
ive ended up using a waterproof boat speedo 4 cell lipo and a tekno clutch but 3 shoes and only 1 clutch shoe spring this acts as a 10th sliper clutch and is great.
ive used this setup for 7 round of the series so far and its cost me no maintainace and it gave me a track record this sunday.
i have just built a similar set up in a rallycross car for rallycross use and i am going to test it only difference will be to reduce the gearing as the rallycross tyres are bigger
brushless speedo and motor for less than £100 cheeper than replacing my engine for this season.

Interesting.. I tried the Thunder tiger gear which is 46T (not bolted up as the holes are out) and it fouled the chassis on the RC8.. I guess the shimming means under the centre diff holder?

Also with my Thunder tiger gear came a spool that fits perfectly in the centre diff holder.. I'm nervous of trying a spool, but i bet it could be converted to a slipper somehow.. speaking of which, has anyone tried the HoBao centre slipper in any of their EP buggies?

oooo - now thats an idea....

Kyosho used one as well years back but Im strugling to remember what it was in.

Kysoho and Hobao spurs are interchangeable generally BUT I dont know if the bolt spacing on the Hobao slipper is different to normal Hobao spurs.. I suspect it may be but it may not be impossible this idea.

My only concern is the slipper itself uses no pads and is entirely spring dependant as it was meant to take the load off the engine when landing rather than to slip under acceleration....

Are you running that on 3s?

Is that the Novak battery tray? Was it not possible to use the original strap? How is the velcro secured?

HKP

The Novak conversion is nice.. it looks expensive compared to the RC monster motor mount and battery boxes, but it is a pretty much plug and play solution. I'm using the RC monster setup in my RC8 (with Novak 5.5 HV) and it runs hotter, the Novak motor heatsink is VERY effective :)

Yep, got a 3S in there until I get 4S, you lose a bit of top end for sure, but for tight tracks (like EPR) it would be fine. I'm thinking the MaxAmps 4S 25C 4000mah might be the best pack for these cars.

The velcro is left over from when I had 2 x 2S packs side by side in the tray, it is actually really effective and hasn't budged yet so I might just keep it.

Thanks Tom, I'm probably going to give a Novak conversion a go. I've not got a buggy yet though. The RC8 is my favourite at the moment, which do you think is toughest when compared to the Xray?

I've never used MaxAmps, but they seem to have a huge following in the US. I've been using TrakPower in my 1/10th cars, so I'd like to get 2 4900 sticks side by side in the Novak tray, I think they'll go in okay. Velcro may be a good way to secure them. In yours is the velcro looped through slots in the tray or held some other way?

I have known so many people with both and the RC8 tends not to be the favourite of many. The Xray spares are a lot dearer but you will need a hell of a lot less. The RC8 can be very quick round a track but is known to be on the erratic side handling wise and very hard to get consistent.

I must admit I have my eye on an HN X1-CR FT BB 2008, daft name, but A lot of buggy for the money..

The 808 looks gorgeous though and will be as well engineered as my XB8, not sure about those shock towers though - I'm thinking the alu ones will be on the top of my wish list...

The HN is very good........BUT the Xray is a nicer thing to work on. Its typical XRAY.

The carbon towers are fine if you glue the edges, it sems there are more issues with the allu towers as they are not the thickest to keep weight down.

There should be some more 808 towers coming to market in a few months all being well ;-) ;-) ;-)

I've raced electric on and off road before but there were several reasons why I wanted to retain the mechanical brakes on my 1/8th, adjustable bias, reduced load on the esc helps keep temperatures down etc. I think it would have been nice if Losi had offered the option. Still you can't please all the people all of the time as they say.:)

what sort of wattage are the motors you are using producing, guessing that as .21's are 2bhp or more you are talking 1500watt or so.

Too slow compared to what?

The 2.5 on 4s is fast enough to make nitros cry, the 1.5 will just make them wish they've never been born :lol:

Took my new 8th electric to EPR today and gave it a few runs through out the day, was sooooo much fun to drive, much nicer over the jumps and bumps than 10th scale!

Hi Chaps,

Found this forum by following Northys sig link on the Caster Forum.

I have an early Fusion that Answer Pete has supplied to me through Bolton Model Mart.http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2006-12/1235735/Fusion%20small%20014.jpg

I'm running a Neu1512 2.5 d motor, with a Monster Max speedo and a couple of packs Pete sorted out for me at 5000 / 20. I'm running 16/44 at this time.

I am from the nitro side, starting in trucks, then truggies and recently, Buggies. On the nitro side I run a Losi8 C6 t7.

I have only run the fusion a couple of times and have yet to run a final (20mins).

Hear is a short phone clip of it going around Pendle.
