WARNING! Novak Brushless Systems

Hey up folks,

This is not a complaint about Novak Kit in general, in fact I would recommend it to anyone! However, I bought a novak 6.5R brushless 'system' online (from a UK hobby shop). This was according to the Novak website to include a sintered rotor for the brushless motor. After gearing changes, much talk on here, 2 meetings and more research, I finally decided to pull the brushless motor apart to find out. Indeed, I was astonished to find out my 6.5R did not have a sintered rotor as was specified in the box and on novaks website.

Luckily when buying the system, I had bought a spare sintered rotor as well. I have now changed over the rotors, and the difference on the bench is astonishing!!

I have yet to try it in anger yet, but the future looks hopeful!

Just to let everyone know...

Mark

I'd go back to the model shop personally and ask them to either supply a sintered motor to replace the incorrect one or get them to contact Novak.

bigred5765 09-10-2007 12:35 PM

probably old stock as the first ones out weren't sintered

He said it was specified sintered in the box.

Hello!

I've also bought a Novak GTB 6.5R system which should have a sintered rotor. But after I read this thread I become a bit sceptical if i really had a sintered rotor. So, I opened the motor and found a bonded rotor instead of a sintered as it said on the box!:( Well, I'm not disappointed by the Novak system at all but when it says that you get a sintered rotor on the box then there should be a sintered rotor! And not a bonded...

racingdwarf 10-10-2007 09:58 PM

Looks like Novak is trying it on a bit.....If it said sintered on the box, thats what should be in the box.I think you have good reason to be:mad:

when u buy a gtb speedo they claim to be water resistant on the box try claiming warranty :o

Anyone who has (or believes they have) been mis sold this then they should contact the model shop they bought it from who will contact CML. If it said it on the actual box then it certainly seems like an error has occurred. If anyone thinks Novak would actually 'try it on' by slipping a few bonded rotors in then you're very much mistaken

Mark if it said it on the website then you could well have ended up with old stock from the shop or distributor.

I have previously been told then if you have the finned cans then it will have a sintered rotor, if the older flat can, it may contain either.

I believe the speedo is indeed water resistant, the case is rubber sealed with all the LED's inside the case, the setting switch is remote from the unit so any water inside that can be dried easily or the switch unit replaced instantly and cheaply if possible. It's not however water proof, to which end no claims are made. I've raced mine all season, most regional’s and half the nationals in the rain and not had a water ingress problem.

markwilliamson2001 11-10-2007 08:29 AM

I had the flat can, so I guess I must have been in the 'either' category. I am not too bothered, since I bought a spare sintered rotor... but I thought other people might like to know, before spending their hard earned cash on a brushless system. I do not believe the bonded motor, actually made much diffrerence to me, apart from on Sunday, at Kiddy, where I made 10th overall, and the motor was quite warm to the touch after Leg 3.

I guess we should say as a summary here...

If you definiately want sintered, buy the one with the finned can/endbell.

Mark.

Mark,

You've defo (in my opinion) been 'caught out' there with old stock, as the part numbers are the same I think as it was a running change/improvement.

Tobbe, is yours a flat or finned can? If yours was bought advertised as sintered on the box then it must be a genuine mistake.

I know from my local shop that since the start of this racing year, all the systems from CML have been the new finned motors which should all defo have sintered rotors.

I bought it from Stormerhobbies. And there it says that it's a Novak GTB 6.5R and as I've learned the motors with the R-mark have sintered rotors. Yes, I' have the flat can motor but on the purple ring of the can it stands 6.5R:wtf:

Northy 11-10-2007 05:11 PM

Well you've learned wrong! :D The 'R' does not mean it is sintered, the very first ones were still an 'R'.

G

super__dan 11-10-2007 05:17 PM

As Northy says I'm afraid you're wrong. The R denotes the wire windings and internal config, nothing to do with rotor. R being different to the now release L series of motors shown here http://www.teamnovak.com/products/br...hts/index.html

I think stormer have shifted old stock onto you and if they told you the R defo denoted that it was sintered then it's most definitly their fault and not Novaks.

no matter what if it says sintered on the box and it aint in the motor, thats a novak problem, so weather you have bought a rotor as well id contact somone for it to be rectified

if you ask for a big mac, get it open your big mac box and find a plain buger, do you just then eat it?

markwilliamson2001 11-10-2007 07:59 PM

Well! I have opened a can of worms here!

I actually bought my Brushless system from M-K-Racing, who have provided me with supplies, quickly and cheaply without complaint. I bought the brushless system from them, as it was about 25 quid cheaper than other UK shops/websites. I also bought the sintered rotor at the same time, since I thought the motor WOULD be bonded. I later read that the 6.5R motors are all sintered, but after using the system for two meetings, and taking it apart, found out it wasn't. After all I wasnt too disappointed, since I had already bought the sintered rotor expecting to fiddle and change it.

I was only posting to let other people know that 6.5R doesnt necessarily mean sintered rotors in Novak motors. I know that Doughty actually likes the bonded rotor in his LRP motors. I also know that Orion/Peak only put in sintered rotors in their motors...

Hope this clarifies where I am coming from!

:D:rolleyes:

Hi Mark,
a genuine mistake. As like Dan says, the bonded was also the R. The only tell tale is the change from smooth to finned cans - but then again me and Dan both have supplied sintered motors from Novak which came with smooth cans...

As for tobbe, it depends if the confusion relates to the R, or if the box stated "Sintered". If the box did state more than just 'R', then was it a label on the box from Novak, or a label which the shop put on the outer packaging which is so easy to do too.

Either way, the first place to call is the shop it was bought from. They should then resolve it, or go through their distributor to further the complaint.

If I open the box and found a buger I would have something to say....:D:D

DanW 11-10-2007 08:55 PM

To check for a packaging error you should look on the "Specifications" panel on the box and look to the field "Magnet".

If it says "High Strength Neodymium" it should be a bounded rotor

If its says "Sintered Neodymium" then it should be sintered rotor

There are still alot of the older smooth can systems sitting around on shop shelves, usually at slightly reduced price.

spulling in nut my fortay!!:p

tobbe 12-10-2007 12:07 PM

Oops...I thought the R meant sintered...So everything is as it should be. It said "high strength neodynium" magnet on the box too. Sorry my bad, I thought I should've got the sintered one but it was a bonded lol:p

markwilliamson2001 13-10-2007 10:49 AM

Same here! My box also said High Strength Neodynium(?).
M.

super__dan 13-10-2007 11:14 AM

OK so just to confirm for anyone else reading this, if it does say sintered on the box, it IS a sintered rotor you will receive inside. Make sure your model shop isn't trying to sell you something it's not and shifting old stock onto you!

bigred5765 13-10-2007 03:52 PM

and my little post was right, i thank you hehe
