2wd or 4wd?

I have decided to get myself a new 1:10th off road buggy for the start of the new outdoor season in april. The trouble is I really can't decide whether to get a 4wd or a 2wd and then which buggy to get i.e b44.1, durango etc.

What are the pros and cons of each class and what would you recommend for me to get.

It has to be less than £300 and a kit not a rtr.

I currently race a Schumacher CAT'98 4wd but i think i would like to try 2wd and I may even consider a short course truck.

I race on astro turf at Bury Metro and carpet/pollished wood floor during the winter.

Thanks for you help.

Josh

sosidge 12-12-2010 09:31 PM

Best advice is to race what is more popular at the tracks you plan to go to.

Apart from that, there is not much to choose between 2wd and 4wd - 2wd is a little cheaper and simpler, 4wd is a little faster and easier to drive in difficult conditions.

Short course is a novelty class in the UK. OK as a second car but I wouldn't make it my main one.

paulc 12-12-2010 09:51 PM

Losi 22 should/will be out by then i think they'll be quite popular round the tracks in the uk and at a decent price around the £200 mark and as sosidge has said 2wd slightly cheaper but harder to drive and i would'nt bother with a sc truck 2wd and 4wd are the main classes in the uk

4wd i'd say the Durango

Paul

if the durango drives like it builds it will be insane !!!

buy a rango and we can help each other with spares :D

Next time you're down at Bury you will have to let me have a go of your Durango so I can see if it suits me. :p

4wd all the way its alot better than a 2wd good luck picking your new car mate .

Holeshot 13-12-2010 08:55 AM

I've never raced a 2wd buggy (only 2wd truck) but have always been a fan of 4wd buggies. Nothing can beat the handling and jumping of a 4wd buggy.

Whiskers 13-12-2010 05:01 PM

Has anybody done a review of the B44.1?

@Captainlip, How did you find the B4.1. Was it competative enough?

RogerM 13-12-2010 05:52 PM

2wd harder to drive but more fun and more rewarding

Slimboyfat 13-12-2010 06:56 PM

2wd arguably improves your skill as a driver.

Also looking at your budget, every 2wd option is available to you with change in your pocket. Not all 4wd 'competition' options are but most budget options are.

captainlip 13-12-2010 06:59 PM

exactly what roger and slimboy just said!

very competative,

What about an X4-Pro? Quite a lot of our Bmax bits fit, and you've got the world expert on X4's (Woody) on tap for help too. You'll have a tidy sum left over as well, allowing you that new radio you wanted.

Remember, whilst racing with us, we tend to mix 2wd and 4wd together. So even the best 2wds are at a slight disadvantage. If you watched yestersdays heat 3 and 4 action (heat 2 was mostly 4wds) you'll have seen the 2wds seriously struggling for grip where the 4wds just hooked up. Racing 2wd vs 2wd this is great fun, and ups your skill level, but racing against 4wds it can be very frustrating, especially if you aren't that good, but are being beaten by 4wders much worse than you.

I've just been looking at the Losi 22 in more detail and I am actually quite tempted by it.

Never really thought about the X4-pro but it is only £180!

dooooooo it! then we can both be on the sidelines trying to get our new buggys working

Si Coe 13-12-2010 07:29 PM

If you can wait, there is also going to be an X4-TE Team version with carbon chassis and big bores. Suspect that will be more towards the £300 end, but I bet you Stu could net you one of the first of these in the UK

pmsl now you read it like that

ashleyb4 13-12-2010 08:39 PM

Personally for me it is 2wd. I only do 4wd for the point and the love of racing.

Persoanally find 2wd such a joy to drive.

A

captainlip 13-12-2010 08:45 PM

2wd is a joy! but I didnt like just scrapping or missing out on B finals, I like to be at least in b finals, and im spending a stupid amount this month to ensure it happens

Whiskers 14-12-2010 09:33 AM

The Ansmann X4-TE looks very nice. And if you change the price listed on Team C's website into £ it works out at £220!! Very cheap for a 4wd! The only thing is only 100 of the team edition 2wds came to the uk and JE Spares only had 1 so it looks like it would be hard to get hold of but if I had a word with WoOdy he might be ably to get me one. And it would be very exclusive if only 100 come to the UK.

rc boy 14-12-2010 10:16 AM

it has to be 2wd theres more of a skill to it in my opinion as for 4wd u always have the easy way out ;)

Whiskers 14-12-2010 04:28 PM

My preference at the moment in order of want most to least=

2wd:
Losi 22
B4.1 FT
Cougar SV

4wd:
DEX410r (am just drawn to it!)
Ansmann X2-TE (depending on availability)
B44.1 FT
Cat sx2
Bmax4 (harder to get now)
Lazer (out of price range though)

What do you guys think?

knighthawk 14-12-2010 04:35 PM

2WD - Tamiya TRF201

4WD - Tamiya TRF511 or TRF502 ( depends if you like belt or shaft drive )

Where is the best place to get the Tamiya gear from in the UK?

jbaskew 14-12-2010 05:23 PM

My local track no longer has a 4wd buggie class (flippin lame!) only 2wd. For years I raced 2wd and then switched to 4wd some time in the mid-90's but about that time our local hobby store changed, track and all! So no more racing my xx4, only running it for fun but I still wanna race, so Whiskers I'm in the same boat as you and here is what I'm thinking.

Losi 22
Schumacher sv
B4.1

From what I've seen the 22 looks to be the bomb...so that's probably what it's gonna be for me. But I've always wanted and never owned a Schumacher so at the last minute that may change. =]

budfish 14-12-2010 06:06 PM

My only problem with losi is PARTS so think on young whiskers you want somthing that your local shop supports and has a good parts and hop up selection available

So it's a lazer!!!

Your right Josh but a laser fs kit can be bought of eBay cheap you don't need the fs2 because you can buy the bits and add to your fs at a later date.

If I was you u would buy the b4.1 good car cheap parts available locally.
Very cheap running costs just buy stagger ribs for the front which last ages so your only buying a pair of tyres instead of 2 pair every 3 meetings

alexb4 14-12-2010 08:00 PM

One thing I must stress before u jump the gun and pre order a 22 wait a month after it comes out as then you will know if they any good:)

I have also been very tempted by the B4.1 FT as they seem to be very reliable and Rob Mills at Bury seems to know lots about them setups wise. And the less tyres I have to buy the better!

budfish 14-12-2010 08:18 PM

That's it mate and there are that many at the club who will have loads of spares to borrow if need be you need never miss a heat again bonus

Buds

Holeshot 14-12-2010 08:33 PM

Wow, very close poll results.

captainlip 14-12-2010 09:30 PM

just buy the rango and join the club :D

No Kidding! I just checked it...pretty much right up the middle.

Si Coe 14-12-2010 10:41 PM

Of course if you don't sell the Cat, you've still got a 4wd too. Only downside in that is the the wheel fitments are different, so they need different tyres.

I actually think Matts wrong about the Cat - indoors on the carpet its great. But when we go back outside I think you'll prefer a B4. Certainly, though I never really liked mine, it was nicer round Goshen than the Cat.

You'll be needing a different motor for a B4 though, the Losi you have now is a bit quick for a 2wd.
