Novak Light Motors

Has anyone tried using them in 4wd offroad?

Thinking of trying it when I go LIPO, currently run 5.5 LRP, thought maybe a Novak 5.5L would reduce the extra punch the LIPO gives and make everything manageable?

I run a 4.5L in my B44, huge fun, as long as its not too bumpy can be a bit of a handfull then:lol:

used a 5.5L in my s4, like a rocket but did get very hot

markwilliamson2001 18-06-2008 10:16 AM

I run a 7.5Light indoors with a 3200 Trakpower Lipo in My cat 98. It is now driveable since I have added some weight to the car. If your not adding weight, I would drop a motor wind (or 2) to get a similiar feel!

I think outside maybe a 6.5L or 6.5R would be ace with lipo and some minor weight added (depending on the lipo pack as the bigger capacity packs (such as the 4900) are about 90g heavier than the 3200 packs.

I've played around with lipo in a b44 with a 5.5L and it is rediculously quick, i'd consider droping to a 6.5L with lipo in 4wd and 7.5L in 2wd adding weight in both cases or changing setup to suit

Chris,

I have no explanation for this but the L motors (only tried 5.5 I think) in a 4wd car do indeed seem to get a bit warmer that the equivilent R motor. Whether that's too hot for someone liking is down to personal choice, I know of several people who run them in their 4wd's though so it must be OK.

Having said that, being in mind the Lipo I don't think I'd even be going as low as a 5.5. Chris Long I know tells me his 2wd is over motored with a 7.5 and Lipo in 2wd. Therefore if/as/when we go Lipo in my minds eye I've been planning on going for a 6.5R in 4wd.

Maybe if Chris reads this he can comment?

Dan i think richard lowe said to me that the L motors get hotter because the wire stuff they use is thinner inside. Hard to explain

Hi Guys,
At weekend I ran 3200 20C saddle pack Lipo with 6.5R in 4wd. The car was plenty fast enough, and if I was to run Lipo exclusively id certainly be running 7.5R.

With a more powerful 25C pack, or 20C+ 4900, the car would be faster again - it just becomes too fast.

Id recommend not to go crazy, you'll be suprised just how high in numbers you'll need to go. And by doing this, you will not put the car, ESC, cells, etc under so much strain, so all is well.

With a 4900 25C pack in my truck, I ran a 7.5R and it was as quick as I need.

With 4900 25C pack in my 2wd, I have in the past run 7.5R and it was good, id consider a 7.5L or even an 8.5L if can get one. 6.5L is just crazy, and 5.5L is beyond that - uncontrollably mental is an understatement.

I spoke to Chris at the weekend and I think he's using 6.5 in 4wd with LIPO, and looks quick too! I was wondering if 5.5L may have some comparison to 6.5R??

Even with LIPO, I like the idea of the fact the L motors are actually about 17g lighter too, less weight the better as far as I'm concerned! (I know these cars seem to have issues when they are light, but I'd rather have less fixed weight and more ballast if necessary!)

Yes, torque is reduced by the use of thin wire. In 2wd this works, but 4wd the torque is required, so the lack of it means more motor strain = heat.

On low grip, L motor in 4wd is good. But as an everyday/fit and forget motor, id always choose R for 4wd.

DaveG28 18-06-2008 11:00 AM

I've got a 6.5R Nosram in my 2wd, so from the looks of the posts I'm probably best starting off with that in 4wd and see how it goes!

super__dan 18-06-2008 11:02 AM

Ben - Yeah, I know the wire is thinner but not sure why that necesarily makes a difference as a brushed motor with say more turns of thinner wire runs cooler, then less turns or thicker wire.

Edit,

Chris might be right, people just jam a little more sue to the softer bottom end?

The top speed of the 5.5L is the same as a 5.5R, it just gets there slower/has a smoother feel out of corners. Whereas the 6.5R will accelerate like a 5.5R but won't hit as high top speed.

So I wouldn;t compare a 5.5L to a 6.5R.

and he isnt joking his 4wd car kept doin wheelies, looked spectacular:thumbsup:

Thinner wire has more resistance people! Think about the power wires going to batteries and motors. 12G wire has less resistance than 14G. Thinner wire will get hot because of the increased resistance.

I was hoping someone actually realised that

Thanks for clearing that up mark:thumbsup:

I don't think it's nearly as simple as that but am preparred to be wrong.

Northy 18-06-2008 02:34 PM

I think it might be Danneth.
Plus don't the L motors have a smaller diameter rotor? That would cause them to run hotter too.
