What makes a mod1 pinion mod 1?

Hi i am trying to find out as much about pinions as possable as i am looking to design some of my own (i am a mechanical engineering student so i have access to the machines needed to make a couple of prototypes) i am going to start with mod 1 pinions as this is what i use in my converted lightning 10.

i know it has something to do with the tooth sizes but am unsure what in partcular i am looking at.

Thanks for all your help Mike

Making your own gears...not as simple as it looks...but if you get the tooth profile's sorted then your away!!!

Some useful info HERE about the modulus...have fun!!!

thanks i am doing it over the summer to pass some time, currently doing research before a 3d cad model then a plastic prototype to test fitments before making from hardened steal I know its not going to be easy but i like a challenge.just need to find out a bit more about the maths involved then I will get cracking on the calculations. looking at that at least I don't need to do calculus (I have just had a full term of calculus and I need to let my brain recover)

What CAD package are you modelling in?

I probably have a ProEngineer tooth form (& gear) for that matter that could be a useful starting point...it'd have the correct involute equation in it to drive the tooth shape if it was useful?

it would be in autocad 2010 as we that is the software i have as autodesk give it to students free of charge.

there are loads of add ons so i am sure i can find one that will help with the specific task.

i will look at pro engineer, do you know if it compatible with autocad?

thanks again mike

The involute curve equation I've used will be of no use in autocad, doh!

aint that just the way? i have had a look at pro/engineer and its about £4500 too expensive.

Module is the metric version of diametral pitch (DP), see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Module_..._module_system for the details. HTH :)

Thank you for all your help, never thought wikipedia would ever correct information,i have also found a good book from the uni library so when i have moved house this weekend, and finished rebuilding my cars (major maintinance for the summer) i will get cracking,i will post a thread in the i made this section to let you all know how i get on.
