Default Advice on a new ESC please

Hi guys,

Im looking to get a new ESC and need some advice/views
firstly im not made of money and have around £100 set aside for an esc

I drive a b5m mainly outdoor astro (bury metro and southport) and indoor carpet (ribble valley)

currently i have a speed passion reventon R with an 8.5t sp motor
Cannot fault the set up, easy to set up, never let me down, really smooth etc

Car handles great but i really feel i need more top end and low down grunt. At the regionals on sunday at southport in the corner sections i was pulling away from people and overtaking well (car handles great) but on the straight people would catch me quite easily hence my yearn for more top end. low down i feel i need more punch for when you need a good sharp squirt to nip infront of someone... but my current set up just lacks in that department.

I have a hobbyking 120a in my box with an orca rx2 8.5t - but im sure its the ESC, often it would just shoot off full pelt on its own randomly - a glitch buster calmed this down but ive no confidence in it and at regionals i dont want to be accident taking people out cos the cars decided to shoot off on its own so looking for a reliable brand.

just really looking for input, im no here near a top diver, usually B final at ribble and bury depends how many turn up but was in B final the other week. I know I can do better as Im really smooth and 99% clean

Esc's im looking at

reventon pro (as SP havent let me down with the reventon r)
vampire SR1+ - i like the idea of not having to mess with the boost etc
Sky Rc toro 120a - a friend has one and recommends it - plus is only around £60
LRP flow - I know several guys with these so must be decent
Absima revenge cts 160a

or any others?

Thanks for looking

I've been running Vampires in my buggies and have no regrets at all.

I used to run a reventon pro, and a hobbyking before that.

Unless you are running faster than 5.5 turns you don't need the SR1+ but the fan is always handy (but can be bought seperately)

I've got an LRP works flow in my spare KF. Good Esc very smooth etc. only down side is making adjustments to it and waiting for the lights etc. Other than that would recommend it. I use an Orion R10.1 in my KF2 but I'm guessing one of those will be out of budget, maybe worth a look second hand?

There's a few good ones in that list and these days you can can a VERY good ESC for around £100.

The Absima is excellent, i run that and have done for nearly 2 years without a failure. We have an offer on these at the moment and you can pick one up for £89.95 or £109.95 with the setting box.

Vampire and LRP are also excellent and in your budget.

Any questions feel free to contact me or ask away on here

Paul did you change your pinion as Southport is a longer track than Ribble which would explain why you were pulling away but losing out on top end? Me and Callum both use the Flow top speedo but a bit fiddly to make adjustments.

I use the reventon pro and with a bit of boost that kicks in after 0.5s it is fine on the straights.
I have an 8.5t in my yz2

No 4WD because nothing lives up to my original Optima. Until now maybe?...

Default pinion

Hi lee I used 22 pinion in qualies and went upto 24 for the final. was definitely better, but lacked punch, like you come round a 180° corner and give it a squirt to jump the table top... i kept landing on top of it where as others were clearing it with ease.

The fact that's it a Reventon R might be your problem. Are they not only like 40amps or something? I used one briefly and it was okay but did lack a bit of power.

I've swapped from using the Orion R10 to the Toro TS120A.

Really pleased with it, looks great, works well, reliable and the bluetooth module is very trick.. quite a few people I know have moved away from the high end brands and started using them now too.

Either that or the absima as its basically the same as the orion R10/HW etc etc

Good call missed that bit on Paul's original post. From memory the R is 80 amp my lad used to run one and it did lack grunt and top end but he was quick in the tricky sections.

Just checked online. It's 70amp so lower end. That's not gonna help.

I swear by Orion R10. I have two that are approaching their fourth birthday!

I am all Vampire and the SR1 is all you need. My son has one in his B5M and is it great with an 8.5 but will easily drive up to a 5.5. Also it is only around £66 at the moment.

The sky rc Toro gets my vote, as would the 160amp version as it has the capacitors built in. Much better now with the aluminium case.
The Bluetooth module is about £15 and separate but really good and clear for programming on your phone.

Well I can certainly recommend the GForce TS160 after I went through the same process of searching a while back, I too have LRP Flow team spec but I hate the programming hassle.
I know it is over your stated budget but it is an all aluminium case complete with fan, the SkyRC TS160 runs a little cheaper so that may be worth considering too but I am led to believe the software is not quite as 'sophisticated', whatever that means in performance I don't know! Happy hunting.

Vampire quote 480A/phase for the SR1 and 764A/phase for the SR1+

The LRP Flow Works is 400A/phase for comparison. The 120A SkyRC Toro has an off road motor limit of 5.5T which is the same as the SR1 limit so I guess around the same. Interestingly the Skyrc 160 has the same motor limits.
