start small and work up until you've as much top end as you want, maybe as small as a 15.

I run 15/82 or 17/82 generally, sometimes up to 21/82 if open track and always has plenty of beans.

Thanks! Small the better seems to be the key!

spur 78 / 15 pinion * 2.43 internal gear ratio works out to 12.6 Losi recommends 12.5. So pretty close!

Thx for your help!

I run 78/25 on my losi 6.5, unless it's a bonded rotor you will just cook the motor and speedo on your gearing

Tyreman won't the motor be less cooked on the 15 tooth than the 25 as the motor will be spinning with less resistance and so has to work less hard??

...but you could gear up as they recommend 10.8:1 for the 6.5 rather than 12.5 (that's th 4.5 turn). IMHO you are better to start under gearing (i.e higher overall ratio) and then gear up rather than go large, then if the motor and speedo are not too hot then gear up a bit.

Just my view.

I was running 78/23 with that exact motor - no problems with heat and gave good performance.

I'm running 78/21 indoors on carpet (sports hall size track), which is about ideal. I should think I'll go up a couple of pinions for larger outdoor tracks though. A 15 pinion sounds way too low to me.

I run 22 indoors, it felt absolutely perfect at the Petit.
