I bet some of you out there have a nice collection of old school electronics!
Anything nice and interesting to show and share?

Here's 2 of mine. They were sealed in their boxes but I just had to open the for a photo taking session

Sanwa Super Vortex 112
This was the choice esc for Team Kyosho Japan to power their Lazer campaign in the early 90s.

Choice esc of Masami Hirosaka in the early 90s to power his championship winning Dog Fighters.

I was shocked to find out a guy at the local track used to have
A Yokomo Super Dog Fighter in the 90's.
Those were the good old days when Associated partnered with Yokomo.
I have some vintage Rc-10 stock motors to prove they were together.
Nowadays it's all about competition.

I've got one of the first design Nosram ESC's that most people in the UK were using in the early 80's. I'll get some better photos up soon but you can just see it in my Optima from the same period.

How about a Demon 2 ESC, vintage 1980. Handles all of 25A through the single power transistor.

As promised some better photos of the "Advanced" FET Controller from Nosram.

I've got some old Radio race car magazines from the time too. I've found an ad from 1988 for the esc, £67.95. That was a month's wages for me back then (I was only working Sundays at the time mind you!).

I've also found a RRC article from July '86 detailing Nick Marsons "Marfet" controller with circuit diagrams and component lists which I tried to build but didn't really have a clue what I was doing as I was only 14.

Hi, can anyone identify this mystery ESC? It's defniately old - and it actually works pretty well too.

It was in a "loft-find" optima that I bought off ebay last year, and the seller knew even less about it that I do...

Looks almost home-grown...

Thanks,
Ty

Hi, yes it was indeed in a thick clear shrink wrap when I received it. The wrap was pretty beat up though, with little incisions here and there for accessing the pots and lots of various tape residues covering it. Here's a picture of it from the original ebay listing...

I cut off the shrink wrap, and encased it in black electrical tape for a while when I ran it in an old Falcon, but it's now just relegated to the odd-parts bin...

Was it a pretty popular unit in the UK? From what period would you guess it to be from?

Fwiw, if anyone would like to have it, you're welcome to have it for the cost of postage...

Cheers,
Ty

I cannot remember if the esc had a name or it was just Glynn Peglar ?
I remember that it came with a Shummacher Cat XLS my mate bought off a guy in Wonderland Models circa 1989 .
I know it was a that kind of speedo as he sent it off to Glynn for repair.

I think the old Nosram speedcontroller could be a extermintor pro?

When I gave up in the early 1990s, the ESC i used was a Speedmaster Ultra Gold Star with a 12 turn limit (this was in 1989).
Here is the racing gear I used:- Glynn Peglar 1700 SCE's, KO Esprit with the steering lock knob at the top, KO world champion servo with it's seperate fet booster, Tekomo pro plus slope charger.

My buggy preference was mainly Schumacher (Cat XLS,Procat or Cougar) although I did try Kyosho ZXR's and Yokomos for a time. I did convert my Yokomo into a Cat-fighter, meaning a Cat front end being fitted to a Yokomo chassis. The motors were quite special being a sponsored driver for B&R motors, the winds would be 15 triple or 14 doubles.

After returning back to the racing scene again last year, I am still running speedmaster speed controllers again. The models I use are either X500 or X3 with no motor limits. The speed ultra silver star is still available, but is much smaller than back in the late 1980's.

I bought a nosram after that and i ran a mg 17 quad motor back in the day with a tekomo pro slope charger.

I was a works MG Driver back in those days ! Still got a couple, and still have the one in my CAT2KTC that I won the Scottish champs with in '95 !

I know it's not vintage as such, but I just picked up a Novak Hammer Pro to go in my 95 CAT !

I'd love to find a Demon 2DH to go back into my Kyosho Beetle, as that was what I ran back then, and yes you could hear the click very clearly !

I got an old LRP speedo off Mr Booth once and that looked pretty similar to the one ni clear shrink wrap...that too was in clear shrink wrap. I think the team drivers used to run them like that when they were testing new products. I think now they just run the new software in older cases.

The Corally is the MMS 2 - the the second generation. The original had fixed built-in limits, I'm sure I have one in the loft - will dig it out over the weekend.

And I will see what else I can dig up.

Some old motors.
In the first picture there is a pair of MG's - the one on the left is an original Epic can and the one on the right a HPI can.
Next is a LRP which used a Sagami can - it is a Yellow E 1/12th wind.
The third is a Kisbey HPI modified (slightly different can/endbell to MG) and an Air Supply based Cobra.

Some more old motors.
1. A Yokomo based Demon 27 double (1/12th) with a conversion to slot brushes.
2.A Schumacher Gold Rush 19 turn Yokomo based mod - a relabeled Reedy.
3. SRM Scorcher modified using the Ayk Race Prep can and had a ceramic motor shaft.
4. Is my Trinity 12 double with Ally endbell that I can at the '92 On-Roard Worlds at the Ranch Pit Shop in California.

This is my oldest motor. Reedy stock motor based on the old Igarashi can. Uses not M3 but 4-40 screws.
I bought the motor when we visited the UK and wanted racing with Nick Adams at the Ally Pally club. From my memory this was 1982.

I also have some Losi Revolution motors from 1987 and some Demon motors Green dot 19T Quad from about 1985.

Another old motor is an AYK based Trinity motor what was used in the Demon MF1 and AE RC12i car so this age.

A pair of speedos - the one at the back is a Laser spot the relay underneath and a Galeforce speedo.

Anyone remember the Futaba escs when they first came out? Case was shaped the same as a servo so it would sit where ever the wiper-blade speedo servo would normally sit with the heatsink sticking out the top to cool mosfets. Very well built, never went wrong. Also loved my nicad charger with mechanical timer and ammeter...

Actually love reading this vintage forum, brings back awesome memories!

Sorry that´s wrong. Before the FET transistors were used there were several ESC what used a relay for full trottle position for reducing voltage drop at the ESC powerstage. These were called Turbo ESC sometimes.

Yes, sorry you are right.

Demon made a speedo using a standard transistor which got you to about 80% and then switched in the relay for full power. Also, I think some old speedos used a relay for the brake.

Sorry about the thread resurrection guys , but I wonder if anyone can shed light on the Speedmaster Gold Star Speed controller - I just got one in a RC10 Team Car. It looks to be in great condition but until I have an idea of its ability I'm loathed to test it !

Motor / Current Rating ?
Forward or FWD/Rev ?
RX voltage - 5V ??

DerbyDan
04-07-2013, 11:19 AM
The Goldstar was the smaller forward only ESC (The Silverstar had the reversing relays which elongated the speedo somewhat!) There were 'Turbo' versions of each which both had lower motor wind limits. I can't remember what the wind limits were off hand but I wouldn't go any lower than say a 17turn on a non-turbo Speedmaster ESC. I think I used to run a 15t Trinity Onyx on my Goldstar, but eventually blew the brake FETS:eh?:

Going from the instruction sheet I have in front of me; the RX voltage is 5v

Hope that helps

Fantastic - given the RC10 doesn't have a crumpled front end i'm assuming the brake FETs are ok at the moment ;)

Bench test with a silver can seems sensible
