hi all..mark Penney here..wanting to gauge interest in running1/10 off road up at badmcc's excellent 1/8 track..this will be a purpose built track inside the 1/8 track..work will take place over the winter ready for spring...I will be heavily involved along with Barkley to get this project running..for those who don't know this club please visit their website for pics and vids..and of course it will be all dirt..1/10 on dirt..nothing could be better....classes run and format will depend on numbers..but hopefully we will generate enough people to make it worthy of possible Irish national racing..I know drop inn racing and 5mile town have lots of members..if we could get all to race there could be 30+ drivers..I hope the dmcc will also support this giving us more competitors.maybe 1/10off road can be a force again just like it used to be..please leave feedback or contact me on 07518365079..

Hi Mark,

William White here. I'd expect there will be plenty of interest in this within the DMCC regarding this and most of the competitors are prepared to travel.

1/10th electric is going through a spurge of growth at the moment and to get a national round up at BADMCC would be great. There is already talk of there being an event in Cork for next year.

Nice one William..spread the word, rally the troops..this is a chance to put 1/10 back where it belongs..at the top of the rc tree..

I would love to see 1/10th off-road getting a come back in Ireland as a whole, if we got a track of BADMCC's quality for 1/10th in dirt it would be awesome. Might even attract some people from across the pond if it's dirt!

I could be up for this the odd time, its a bit far for a regular trip when we have racing in Dublin every weekend. Good luck with it though.

Well obviously we won't be travelling every week, but if we tried to get up for the big meetings 3 or 4 times over the season.

that's fine..everyone has a home track they stick to..no one can really travel like that every other weekend..but maybe in the very near future we could have a proper Irish championship like the days of old.. I know ballymena has a decent astro track, although I havnt been there and is it navans astro track.. These tracks are also possible for 1/10 providing the clubs will let us run,..from what I gather they will..although they may need a little work for 1/10..but will get these clubs extra members and a better racing atmosphere with more racers..I'm getting really excited about these prospects..

Having raced 1/8th off Road @ the BADMCC, the prospect of a 10th off road track is quite appealing.

The current 8th track is unreal so I can imagine what the lads up there will build. A meeting every month or 6 weeks with plenty of notice wouldn't be a problem for me. Also the idea of getting back to the old association type championship would be great. I get to throw a burger on the floor again in McDonalds in Lisburn.

I will support this the best I can, for me it will always have to be Sundays as I work Saturdays.

Thanks Mark.

Brian MacManus.

I'm thrilled by this news too, really looking forward to it - I hope to see (and compete in) 2wd and Trucks (open or Short Course, both good!), and maybe 4wd too.

If you need any help with the project, I can help in an online capacity (I'm a web geek).

Would probably be worth running open tyres for the first couple of meets so we can try anything people have lying around, etc to see what works well and doesnt wear too badly.

A control tyre would be good, well probably best to have one or two so you have a dry/wet option.

I agree with u steve..we all have dirt tyres of some sort lying around..might as well use them..I wouldn't want the first few meets to be full of restrictions..gonna take a few meets to see what's what..them we can make decisions..

Hi guys.

Some of you may know me already. My name is Martin O'Doherty and I am a member at BADMCC.

The club has a (click>>>) 1/10 thread (http://www.badmcc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=231&p=764#p764#) (<<<click) on our club forum relating to this topic. We would appreciate it if anyone interested in making this happen could click on the link above and pop over there to leave us your thoughts or views.

We will be meeting on Monday 21st Feb at 1930hrs or 7.30pm at The Tannery (Chestnut Lodge) 6 Chestnut Hill Road, Moira, BT67 0LW.

Anyone interested please come along and see if we can make this happen.

Thanks in advance

Hi all,

This would be a fantastic development for the sport here. BADMCC have run large events before and would surely be able to host RCCAOI rounds and hopefully regular racing.

With 2 clubs in the immediate area, development of this facility may result in some "restructuring" in those clubs - and I would hope that they would come together in the outdoor season to race together. Although the racing is good in both clubs at the moment, no decent standard of driving is going to happen in Drop-Inn or CVMCC without a proper outdoor track.

The building of a 1/10 track at BADMCC has been spoken about casually since Xmas, and I know that there are dozens of people keen to see it work. Please register your interest on the BADMCC forum, so this happens!

Regards

William White - DMCC

Hi Jim,

Reading it back - I sound a bit derogatory in my post, but it's not meant to be. Drop-Inn and CVMCC both have a batch of young/Junior racers that could be the stars of the future...... if given the opportunity to do so.
The proper outdoor track is a must.

Lol, Jim an Will handbags at Dawn!

I know where will is coming from, racing on one surface and one surface alone is never going to give you the wide ranged skill-set required to do well at an international level. There are good racers at CVMCC but realistically none of them would be even fit to put it in an E or F final at a UK national, nevermind anything international!

Handbag will be going with me on Thursday night by the look of things.....I'll get to you before the 2 leading Truggy drivers in the country have a wee word.........:p

Off road driving is a technique which takes some mastering but there have been some sweeping comments recently which doesn't really reflect the driving ability of some of our younger drivers let alone those who raced quite a number of years ago......lol

Get Lee Martin over and he'd show you that there's no real pace in Ireland because there isn't enough actual off-road racing being done on a variety of tracks against a variety of drivers.

Anybody getting to race with as much variation and sheer time driving would improve a he'll of a lot but that doesn't really change the fact that at the moment the overall average pace in Ireland would be relatively low when compared to that of the UK national championship.

A lot of that is down to lack of variation in the driving especially when comparing the style of tracks raced. Racing in fivemiletown is good fun and competitive but the people who've ony driven there would have a massive culture shock when going to different surfaces.

All the regular top "A" finalists at CVMCC have had experience driving on different surfaces.....:p

Agree there is only a handful, if that, of drivers from the North who have experience racing 1\10th off road. However there should be a wealth of drivers who raced for Clubs before the lack of interest in the class began. Whether these drivers will have a budget or interest to come back to compete in the class, time will tell.

As agreed at the club meeting on Monday past, BADMCC will try and make 1/10 racing available this year. The intention is to modify the existing layout to make a track within a track, bypassing the unsuitable features. This is to be able to be done within a few minutes so we can run a 1/10 heat on normal race days along with the normal 1/8 nitros. Initially there will be no class division etc until we see how it all pans out, but it is hoped the 1/10 guys will come together to agree on this at a later date.

There is a meeting scheduled at the track for Sunday 27th @ 11.30am for 1/10 drivers to give their input of modifying the track layout to make it more suitable. Anyone interested is welcome to come along and see for themselves and put forward any views or suggestions.

On a separate matter, the club will also allow any 1/8 electric to run alongside the nitros. Anyone interested please get in touch.

sundays not happening...some people couldnt make it,spoke to barkley, he is only going there to lift the track ready for maintenance so no immediate panic...the track will be going ahead...spoke to barkley yesterday at length...although the track may not be a perfect 1/10 track like some people may think, its a fantastic base for our class to start with...if the class is well supported through the year and looks promising for the future barkley has stated a purpose built track is possible...this will be astro turf so as it will be able to be used all year round...so come all you guys this is our chance...i only hope all who have gave me confidence that this will work will turn up and support it...

I just had another look at the tyres available to us; it seems SMD do not bring JConcepts 1/10th tyres into the UK. That leaves Proline, plus the Core RC ones by Schumacher I've previously mentioned, and these Fastrax ones (http://www.fastrax-rc.com/wheels-tyres-shocks.php?category=0000000058) which look awfully similar to the Core RC ones. Price is a lot more palatable than the Prolines.

Yeah that's about right. Those block tyres are similar to the Proline Crimefighters which provide more equal lateral grip than the bar type treads. Sometimes a really small block tread like this (http://www.cmldistribution.co.uk/cml_product.php?range=RACING&productId=0000004940) works well in both dry and damp conditions

Still looks far too big and fast for 1/10..but we will see how it goes..as for the big jump Ian apparently u can just clear the double flat open with a 6.5...but that's not what it's all about..I don't fancy sweeping up my b4 after crashing flat out..lol..I think 4wd mod short course looks the best option on that track..now that would be fun...

I'm just working out what to bring - B4 and E-Firestorm for sure, alas my E Fireblitz SCT won't be ready in time, still getting in bits for that.

Will there be many running 4wd buggies? I have a suspicion that the lions share of buggies there will be 2wd.

I've found that those Fastrax tyres come pre-mounted for the same price! Bad news is they're 12mm hex wheels. Good news is you can use a XXX-S or TC3 hex set to adapt rear pin-drive axles to 12mm hexes (and you can use the fronts on the rear too for a skinny tyre). There may be an issue of offset making cars non-legal width, but for the first set of tyres on a fun day, that hardly matters.

Looking forward to getting at least the xxx, and maybe the 22 if I get the time to buid it round the new track.

Mark, dont think its too long, just maybe a bit spread out - it kinda had to be to make use of the suitable track features, we couldn't leave it boring!!

Big thankyou to BADMCC for the effort in facilitating the 1/10th movement, up to us now to make it worthwhile for the club, and bring back the 1/10th heyday.

On tires, it will be very hard to guess what to use as the tires will be very different from 1/8th due to the significant weight difference. My first port of call will be Losi Silver Studs, and maybe 8086 M2 Flat Stubbies (hope these are still available!!). Ribs will also probably work in 2wd. In 1/10th it was always 80% compound and 20% pattern in terms of getting the right tire on dirt.

Very little info out there on the Fastrax tyres, aside from being targeted at bashers.

I found a link to a tyre chart on PetitRC - http://www.petitrc.com/setup/tires/1-10BuggyTireChart.pdf

From that, Losi X-2000, especially Pink, was suggested as working on almost any hard surface;

Today was awesome on the BADMCC track. First time I ever remember ribs being the right tire on the front of 2wd! Golorious day and fabulous fun - pity more of our southern irish friends weren't able to make the trip as it would have been well worth it. Looking forward to next Sunday already.

As an aside - I think BADMCC should be asked to host a 2wd and 4wd round of THIS YEARS Irish Championship. The track is awesome and it would certainly encourage support from NI drivers if the association were to support an emerging electric venture. Having been Chairman of the RCCAOI for a number of years in the past, I know there is no reason that it can't happen.

I'd say polished wood is much easier - I'll likely be taking the B4 out on it this Thursday, and I'll bet it won't be uselessly doing donuts every time I think of touching the throttle!

I presume it'll just be an open 1/10th class? I really enjoyed taking my truck round that track, and I'll bet I can get it to handle better if I actually fix the shocks...

Colmo if u are stuck for dirt tires i can bring some up to bangor tomorrow. Got loads left after the euros this year.

I'll not be racing at Bangor tomorrow, but I'll drop by at some time, I'll gladly take dirt tyres off your hands. Also want a word about the Oople.

Another good day at BADMCC - alas, only 4 electric runners this time, but we all gave it our best.

Mark Penney once again showed us a clean pair of wheels in possibly his last drive with a B4.1 before he completes his defection to Losi, Andy Rennick broke his Losi XXX every round except the last final, Jack Nelson got better and better with his XXX4, whilst I struggled with the jumps in my B4.

My thanks to C. Whelan for the Bowties and front ribs, much improved performance there. The track lost traction as it dried throughout the day, and ate tyres faster and faster! It looks like a one-set-per-day track - fresh rubber for the finals, leave them on for qualifying the following meet, and repeat. I've asked Andy for a set of Fastrax H-pattern (Bowtie copy) spoked premounts - ideal for the Losi 22 drivers as they have a 12mm hex fitment. I have XXX-S hex adapters to convert my B4 to 12mm.

We need a bulk order of earplugs - marshalling those nitros is bad for the ears :S

Sorry guys, us lot from Carrick wont be there on Sunday.

Im gutted about missing it, but Sunday's (and Wed!) are just really busy for me and its hard to get an entire day to myself.

I'll hopefully be there next time though! Hope its a great day.

P.S. it sucks that the only two 1/10th electric off road tracks I know of in N.Ireland run on a Wed (Craigavon) and Sunday (BADMCC).
Does anyone know of any others that perhaps run on Saturday?

Cheers.
Andrew.

There's Clogher Valley MCC in Fivemiletown on Thursdays. After that, there's DMCC in Lucan, near Dublin (they run on Sundays too). There'll be a track in Longford too, once that project reaches fruition.

Yes, and yes (afaik).

My E Firestorm loves that track - it's a lap quicker than my poor B4.

Just the 4, but low turnout is normal for holiday weekends. One person couldn't make it due to bereavement. We may well see a contingent from Dublin as they are not running a home championship round this weekend.

Well, there is at least 2 coming from Carrick! :)
Trying to get smoe new tyres sorted for the surface - I read that it is a bit slippy and tricky to get grip so Im hoping the new Proline Calibers are going to do the job for me.
They seem to have got pretty good reviews so far - esp in 1/8th nitro on American clay tracks.

You've raced the BADMCC track before - how would you describe the track? Do you think I should set up for big jumps, high grip, low grip, etc?

It's a hard abrasive surface with a fair amount of loose debris on it (you'll see me flicking stones off it throughout my marshalling stints).

As we go over many of the jumps the wrong way (we may try reversing direction on Sunday!), you can't really take them hard (crashing on jumps eats far more time than taking them easy - I learned this the hard way), so setup would be for a bumpy, dusty, low grip dirt track.

'Clay' and 'Blue-groove' setups would be for higher grip surfaces. Don't go too soft on your suspension, that just seems to make the car handle worse. There are no hairpin corners, so you setup for stability rather than steering.

Hey,

I've loads of dirt tyres glued on B4/b44 rims. If anyone is looking for dirt tyres.
Most of them would only have 2 runs on them at most. They would be the tyres I would have used when racing at the Euros and Worlds.

Anyone interested give me a shout and I can get a list of what exactly I have together.

MiCk B. :-)

Round 3 of the electric off-roaders at BADMCC saw five people take the grid, with stalwart ace Mark Penney missing due to work commitments.

The track had taken some rain so the loamy surface made grip tricky. Despite threat of rain, none fell, and the track got better and better - it was the colour of milk chocolate by the time the finals came, with the racing line slightly lighter in hue.

Andy Rennick aka modeltune took the win with a 9 lapper, whilst myself (driving my E-Firestorm truck) and two other Andys, driving 4x4 buggies, including newcomer Cardnim, battled it out for 2nd, with young Pierce, also on his debut at the track, bringing up the rear. I'm not actually sure who took 2nd, I think it was me...not that we cared, it was another excellent day's dirt racing.
