you don't have lots of money to splash out so i'd try find a 4wd thats reliable and durable, never having raced 4wd before your probably going to have some crashs and tumbles so it would be nice to have spares available trackside that arn't going to make you bankrupt! I'd suggest a kyosha zx5, associated b44 or hotbodies d4 as spares are almost always available trackside at batley/york and these 3 cars relitively easy to understand and drive with plenty of other drivers that will be able to help you with any setup tips or questions you may have and the cars can come 2nd near the price you can afford, can't comment on the tamiya durga as i don't have much knowledge on them but from what i've seen and heard it's a good competitive 4wd for all driver abilities and is a good price, only thing i can comment on is the tamiya hop up parts arn't cheap and you may want a few of them as i've heard a few things are essential for the durga.
Hope this helps and is a good constructive post Mike.

thats excellent mike, some good advice mate. i was looking at the durgas, but as you say, some of the 501x hop ups are needed to make it smoother.
the zx5 does look nice, and it is cheap, my main worry is spares, either not being available or being like £10 for a pair of arms. so, out of a kyosho ZX-5, Tamiya Durga or Predator, which would be best suited to me? also, who is westie? id like to see that buggy hes selling if i could? thanks guys, great advice so far

stretch your budget a bit and get a 2nd hand b44 ( I paid £130 for my one ).
I had a zx5 before and found it very fragile and as some of the parts come on sprews you have to buy an entire sprew for just one part. the diffs on the zx5 were a pita as well I was constantly rebuilding them the b44 also shares some parts with the b4 and although the shock towers are almost twice the price of the zx5 you wont break them anywhere as easialy as the zx5 ones. the b44 is also quite comon and most cml shops should have most bits for it. never driven or owned a durga, they look tough but I suspect parts might be an issue as some of the tamiya tc cars are a real pig to get bits for look at parts availability before you go for this one. oh yeah I've broken 3 zx5 chasis and never even put a dent in my b44 chasis my buggy driving is best described as fast and skittish with way to mutch air

If you could stretch a few more notes, how about the b-max? Everyone on here who has one seems to think that they are good quality. Also capable of winning nationals in the right hands, so can't be bad?

Looking at the list of cars for sale I would say the KMC ZX5 or the bj4 is the best bet
