Import costs from Japan.
Hi all.
Has anyone order much from over seas. I'm looking to get some bits from banzai rc in Japan but wasn't sure on the import tax and how much it is. Anyone had any experience or any idea on how much it is. Cheers |

if you get clobbered properly then from my experience its about 20-25% and likely an £8 charge for customs handling etc with royal mail
you may get lucky and it sail through with no charges if it comes by post then its usually ok, if you have it sent by courier then you get hit I ordered from hobbyking china, small package and UPS shipping was only small amount more, goods were about £12 got a bill of £18 from UPS LOL

If you can persuade the sender to put lesser costs on the packaging such as $35 then zero costs

The last few items I've purchased through Jauce have ended up costing me almost as much again in fees and charges.
It's basically a licence for parcelforce to print money. That said, I've managed to get a few pretty sweet rare tamiya bits & models in mint condition, so it's swings and roundabouts. |

Not always, as they have started to look at cost of items, and if your caught making false claim the fine is steep for both parties

I have ordered from RCMart and where the cost has been more than >$40 they have put a flat $15 value. So far it has worked fine for me and I do think, because they value their oversea customers they tend to do this more and more to get people buying from them. As mentioned it is a very risky thing to do long term.

It sounds very hit or miss. Could work out more expensive and complicated in the long run. Think I will be keeping custom in the uk

I buy from the US through my mate over there and he sends as a gift. Japan ive also got contacts who help me out. Not much of an issue if not buying bulk.

Why not try supporting your local model shop? Or at least a shop within the UK, and a UK distributor? Are trying to get something that you cannot source here in Britain?

I have no issue at all buying anything from my local. I see a really good deal from overseas which would save me quite a bit of money. But looking into it with taxes it would end up the same.

I've always had good success using RCmart (HK) never any duty. Also same with A-main (US) if USPS is selected.
Never had duty on shipped stuff from China (Banggood, Hobbyking, ebay, gearbest, etc). I got stung with £26 duty and handling charges on an order of KO Propo parts from Japan on a £25 order, shipped via EMS. It was processed by one of the other couriers in the UK (forgot which) and they really loaded up on the fees and even charged duty and VAT at 40% on the EMS shipping on the fee breakdown, crazy. I had to pay it before they delivered, otherwise they would have sung for it. I'd always try avoid using EMS shipping, as it gets treated badly with duty and handling fees here. Otherwise I'd buy whatever I wanted or needed from anywhere. And before the buy only from UK shop lot go on, I bloodywell buy a lot from retailers here in the UK. But you can't always get everything here for me its about availability, not price. $$ rate now has made some overseas deals less attractive, however its something that you can't buy here, i'll just order it.
