I am fuming, my dad always tells me I'm wasting my pay checks on R/C cars, but how can he say that when I earn the money and spend it on what I enjoy. He always takes the piss out of the hobby, I think it's time he grew up and reallized it is a proper sport!

Just send him onto Oople, no site promotes RC, it's serious side and also it's more relaxed side like Oople. Let him see Jimmys reports and let him see some vids and so on. I was lucky that when I was younger and racing, my dad backed me up and was my mechanic untill such times I was competent to do it on my own. Now I do the same with my own boy and we really enjoy the racing and spending time together at the track. Just keep plodding away and he might just come round 1 day lol. At least you're spending your money doing a hobby you enjoy, dad needs to realise you could be out on the streets doing worse things.
Scotty....

This sort of thing really saddens me...
I was really lucky, in that my dad got me involved in it, although I wasnt too keen to start with, but as soon as I went to the track, I was hooked. My dad also was my mechanic, and really helped me with understanding the car, batteries etc..which helps me today, and kept me out of trouble. I HATE to hear about parents not being at all interested in their kids hobbies, which are actually educational, and sociable. ![]() ![]()

Hmmm Tennis
![]() At least at the race track you are learning co-ordination with racing lines, problem solving when things go wrong with the car & overall you will make great friends, also your not out rioting in the streets or hanging out on street corners Like others i was lucky to have my dad doing the pit work when i started, until i started to beat him & he made me do it on my own ![]() If it's what you love doing Jamie keep at it buddy ![]() A rc car is not just for christmas, it's for life!!!!

RC is a great hobby, and also teaches you a huge amount about engineering, vehicle dynamics, electronics etc, so can lead to all sorts of things.
Lewis Hamilton started out as an RC racer. I also got my current job for Mercedes F1 as a result of my RC-Timing software (another RC racer working for Honda as the team was then tracked me down). At the very least you'll have a lot of fun, make friends and spend a lot less time watching crap on TV or drinking alcopops outside the local CoOp ![]() |

![]() ![]() maybe your dad needs to sit down in front of the TV and watch the rioters over the last few weeks. then look at you and think he is doing something he likes. not on street corners not doing smash and grabs. stick with what you enjoy waste as much money as you like as long as it brings you pleasure!!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Jamie.
All depends on how old you are really, if it's your 1st job and you are quite young / still living at home, I can understand your dads comments. Rc cars are silly expensive. I don't believe for a minute its a 'sport' it is a hobby. Fair play, some people are 'professional' racers but it's all an elegantly engineered marketing ploy to get you to buy product x instead of product y, or persuade you that you need to buy something to remain competitive ! Don't get me wrong I love rc cars, my parents hated it when I was a kid as all they could see was the expense involved. I returned to the hobby when I could afford it. If I was a young 20 something starting out in life and looking for a mortgage, starting a family / settling down etc then I would sack it off. That's what I did and just got back into it when I could. I've being in and out of the hobby for the last 20 years due to family / kids / doing up my house etc. I assume, that in these very difficult times your dad is just worried you are wasting your money when it could be used for more important things - if that's the case I'd give him a break ! Alternatively, you could be minted, in that case do what the hell you like ![]() |

Jamie,
I started racing RC cars at a young age and it gave me a excellent understanding of mechanical issues and race setup, this lead to a job building race car engines for a living and then at the age of 19 I was offered a job at Williams F1. I have spent the last 21 years there 10 of which I spent on our race team travelling the world! It's amazing how many of us at Williams raced RC cars at a young age, it is a great way to develope skills and knowledge. Try running that past the old man. Cheers, James. |

I think I can agree with all the above posts... However... you've all missed something.
Clearly he's just jealous you're having so much fun and have found something you love. Talk him into getting a car so he can race you, then tell him if you can beat him, no more winding up from him, until he can beat you, then he can say what he wants ![]() ![]() |
