help with masking technique please
hi all i am getting my airbrush set up again and gonna do a few shells
ive always masked my shells with tape and vinal before but i have now decided to go down the liquid mask route for more detail in my shells i no that rcs is the stuff to use but it was out of stock at je so i have tried using humbrol maskol http://www.humbrol.com/shop/coatings...l-28ml-bottle/ i apply 3 or 4 coats but when i come to cut it it has a tendency to chatter at the edges and not cut cleanly and it also has a lot of tension so seems to ping rather than peel am i using the wrong stuff to start with ? also is it best to cut pin stripes first or last im not sure i could cut them at all with this rubbery mask, is the rcs mask rubbery or does it peel off more like masking tape or vinal any help and tips and recommendations of brands of liquid mask well appreciated cheers guys

Hi Johnny
Have only used rcs lm so can't comment on other brands but i have not had a issue with it, i tend to spray mine on as it provides a nice smooth surface to cut on, usually around 4-5 coats flash dried with a hairdryer then allowed to go off in the airing cupboard, overnight for the last coat As for cutting pin stripes or the rest of the design i always cut the lot at the start as overspray can mask the design on the outside where as providing you haven't gone too heavy with the paint you should still be able to see the cut lines on the inside It's trial & error really with getting it thick enough but if you have enough on it will pull off the shell no probs & doesn't crack, i always use a new scalpal blade with each shell Hope that helps a bit fella

nice one pal im getting the rcs stuff next two days so i will be experimenting
can you put the mask on too thick or is it better thicker got some super sharp blades now as well tanks for all advice id rather keep any mistakes to a minimum by doing my research first the humbrol stuff seems really sticky and rubbery hope the rcs is firmer to work with

Johnny/
Id scrap the stuff you have put on already, if you can get it off the shell - then start again with RCS mask. Re thickness. What I do - is - do not cut the shell out, so when you mask it, mask it all even the bits you won't paint. I also spray on 3 to 4 coats. When dry I cut a small piece on part of the lexan that is not the shell as such, to test thickness. If it peels away ok it's fine, if it's a nightmare to get off it's too thin. When you have done a few you get a feel for it. With liquid mask, too thick is fine as it still comes off ok, too thin is a nightmare to get off. |

How easy is it to clean the liquid mask from the airbrush?
Would you keep a cheaper, larger nozzle airbrush for this job? I've been brushing the liquid mask on but need to leave a long time between coats or it will soften too much when applying the next coat. This means it's usually a few days before I've finished applying liquid mask... |

Hey,
I agree with AndyS remove the stuff youve got at the moment and start a fresh (the humbrol stuff isn't great for this application, a friend also tried it ) I brush my liquid mask (I also use RCS liquid mask) I start with the usual washing the body etc and then I apply a thinnish coat using a soft bristled brush (I find a 1in brush is about right), Dry with Hair dryer (on hot/warm) setting until it is dry (takes a min or so) then repeat for approx 4 layers. I then leave the last coat overnight before cutting and painting. Done right this leaves a preety smooth and even coat that removes with ease. Personally I wouldnt spray liquid mask on with the same brush I was airbrushing with (IMO the brush is much too small, I think a cheap air gun maybe better for this?) Best of Luck |

Indeed - you have no chance spraying liquid mask with your paint airbrush !
I use a car spray gun to spray the mask. Works a treat - but needs quite high pressure and makes my Bambi compressor work quite hard!! Also - it's a pig to clean out the gun if you don't flush it straight away with plenty of water. Personally I will never brush liquid mask on again - with the gun it goes on so smooth you almost can't tell it's on. If it wasn't green it would be invisible it's that flat |
