How many batteries would you take to a race meet?
Just as title says, I'll have 6 sets of saddles by the weekend, is that enough?

I run two cars on 5 shorties, but 4 is enough, when running two cars at a meeting. 1/car pack is enough if you have an hour between rounds, or can charge at 20A.

Packs

If you have Lipo saddles then two packs will easily see you through the day. As said, technically you could even manage with one, if you can charge at 20a, but that just adds stress to a fun day. 😉

I bought 6 mainly so I can go practice for an hour or so without charging. What charger would you recommend? I currently have a IMAX B6 charger.

I have two batteries per car.
As all my cars take different sized packs. At my last race meet (couple of years ago now) i could probably have managed with one, as i could recharge from a 5 minute heat in about 20-25 minutes. And that was charging at 1c. Could possibly even have managed two heats per charge, as i get about 12 minutes driving before the battery goes. On the 2wd i almost certainly could have done the two heats, as i can get 15 mins before needing to charge. Only downside to that is that i'd need near enough an hour to charge (at 1c) |

Only downside with having 6 is keeping track of which ones are charged and which ones aren't. And being rigorous with keeping them as pairs. (not a problem if they are all different batteries.)
Also, you can't store them charged so if you break your car after 20 minutes, you've got 4 sets of batteries to discharge once you get home....... And i use an RS16/eFuel charger (very shiny, but near enough 120 quid) and a 20A/300W Reaktor and a PSU from hobbyking. (which cost me about 60 quid all in) |

LiPo chemistry just doesn't like being stored fully charged.
The electrodes in the battery begin to break down. Best case = It's no big deal More likely = you lose a bit of top end grunt if you do it repeatedly. Worst case = the cells swell and crack the casing and (possibly) burst into flames when you are using them. It's just not such a good idea. (FWIW, i sometimes leave a battery charged for a couple of days. If it was going to be a week, i'd discharge to a storage charge level.) |

Charger
I had an IMAX for years. Does the job fine pal. You can spend ££ on a charger with higher A but one with a 5A charge is more than sufficient for our meetings.

I've got 2 sets of higher mah and c output than the other 4 sets. As regards to charging, I take it the indoor meets will have power supply, but what about the outdoor? Would I need some sort of generator?

Genny or 12v battery to power your charger outside.
