Default Spektrum Radio

I am thinking of getting a spektrum radio, A Futaba 3vcs with spek module.
I know all the benefits for running spektrum but are there any against's I should be aware of apart from cost?

There were some interference (or similar) problems early on, but I think that is fixed now. the main problem I see is the integration of the spektrum with the existing systems. I guess on the 3vcs you'd have the box sticking out of the back with the little antenna poking out - which is easy to damage.

Thats the only real drawback I can see at the moment.

I have run a spektrum unit in my 3vc radio this season at the nationals and have had no poblems whatsoever with it.
What Jimmy said was correct....most of the bugs and problems were in the early recievers and have been sorted out now with sotware upgrades.
As the module is inserted in the back of the Futaba radio it is protected from damage by the carrying handle of the 3vc....if you want photos of the installed unit, give me a P.M

It will, but you need to get the transmitter converted first and it's a one way process (helger do it for about £50)

The only thing I worry about with Spektrum is that they won't be compatible with stuff for very long. PPM has been around forever and PCM is pretty well settled. I guess I'll be happier when I see other companies making Spektrum-compatible receivers and something of a standard emerging.

with regards to the aerial on the 3vc i found that with the spektrum system that even though yes it has a guard on the rear when you place the handset down on your table or such it is always resting on the aerial joint ( where it bends )and that the guard actually places pressure on that joint where it is a bit tight. And due to this it eventually snapped the aerial joint and what with the availability of the aerials at the time i had a job to get another one but once i did i modified the handle on the 3vc to protect the aerial more by removing the guard and rotating it so that it points downwards rather than to the top so that the bar is actually keeping the table surface away from the aerial joint when it is placed down and when it is put in the case it does the same ( especially if you have a tight case ) and no pressure is applied to the aerial from it either.

I've been using for spektrum for over a year now in my Futba 3PK and not a had a single shutdown or any other problems with it. Personally I think its one of the best things to happen to rc racing in the last few years.
