What's the rush
Okay, so apparently being unemployed has made me loose my marbles big time... WHY ? Well for some reason I thought it would be fantastic idea to PAINT everything on this shell, NONE of this is stickers, the vents with the fan in them on the back, the light covers, the grill and it's thin surround and every single logo was painted on, oh and the carbon texture... I've almost gone mad doing it but in the end it was worth it. Especially to see the grin's and get a "WOW" from the boys at RC Lazy when I delivered it last night. Lookin' forward to the video Simon ! |

Not a lot
My love / hate relationship with waterbased paint worsen's... I think if I'd keyed the shell up I'd have had less problems with masking over things I'd already done, can't key up where the chrome is though... Also think I'd have had less build with solvent paint which on multi colour layer things became a problem. All soon forgotten though as it has turned out nice in the end. |

Have to say having seen this in the flesh, the pictures don't do it justice. It's quite frankly an incredible shell and too good to run. Lots of little details in the pearl white, the fan housings and the glittery red on the stars really pops.
Best shell i've seen in a long time. You've got some skills there buddy! Need to send you my Cougar shell/ undertray methinks! Mark

Very fine work
Its amazing how simplistic it looks, but when you look at how much effort has gone into all the logos etc you realise that it must of taken a good amount of time and effort to getting it look sooooooo good. I'm mean those logo really are good! quality work. I love the twill weave carbon it looks really good, what did you use to get that effect? been looking for a while but not seen anything suitable. Looking forward seeing more of your work |

WOW
How many hours do you reckon went into that ? I'm assuming mainly - or all vinyl masks cut on the computer ? I'm desperate to have a go with my Robo cutter now... |

Thank you all for your kind words, however much swearing there was at this shell the stuff I hear afterwards is what makes it all okay again
So an extra image of the carbon for you all. @ Mark, cheers fella ! I'm sure I can sort something out on your cars, no trouble. @ Graham, thank you. You can't believe how much effort I put into this, there are silver stars faded out from the logo's over the pearl white but as is the nature of photography vs paintwork they don't really show up, they were meant to be subtle, just some extra details. The carbon is all done on a cutter, hours and hours for the poor little machine to do and I think doing that alone took me a whole afternoon. This isn't viable in the real world, if you're doing it for yourself that's fine and this was sort of to showcase what I could do and also to prove to myself what I could do / where the limitations of the paint were. So with the cutter taking so long I think realistically the carbon alone was a day's work, crazy hours. @ Andy, I have no idea how many hours I put into it, way too many to be able to repeat it again unless someone wants to sling vast amounts of cash at me with all the computer work involved I'd say a week's worth of hours though, easily, if I added it up properly I'd scare myself so probably best not to. I did liquid mask up the entire shell... Mainly useful for the rear section with so many folds and extra pieces, these short course shells are a pig to cut out. The the big starts on the side and the window frames were painted through LM, the rest as you right suggest is vinyl cut mask. However I'm having problems with it lifting due to the heat gun being used on it and getting blow throughs which is really annoying when you're trying to make something perfect. So maybe not the best one to get, perhaps a more sticky one would work better ??? Chance of leave glue residue. Swings and roundabouts... |

Cheers Simon, great video, thanks for mentioning me, very pleased you are so happy with the shell.
Thanks Stu. Carbon effect all done with the cutter. Make jaggy line pattern that looks like carbon, feed through clever computer cutter. Spend hours weeding out said jaggy line design, apply to shell making sure it looks like it would in real life. Paint dark carbon colour down first, then with the clever border you left on the carbon mask peel away... watch in horror as every single piece breaks off, swear at it, swear at it some more, swear at yourself for trying to be clever and do carbon in a new way, spend hours picking off individual jaggy lines, paint lighter colour, stand back and admire your work The grill is just masked again. Cutters truly are wonderful things one of the best things I have ever spent money on, without a doubt ! I've got a Roland STX-7 but if you can get one of those craft robo's which are about a fifth of the price and learn yourself Inkscape or Corel Draw or some sort of vector program you're almost there |

Thanks !
I would suggest if you are going to try and do most of the shell with the cutter you key it up with some fine scotchbrite or something similar to give the paint a key to stick to. That way you should avoid the troubles I was finding with masking over detailed. My cutter is one of the best things I have ever paid money for in my entire life. Without it this SC shell would have taken 4 times as long if I'd had to cut it all by hand and I think I would have given up. |

cheers for the advise ive been practicing today on some polycarb sheet and it was lifting the paint when the mask's were pealed off , had to have a

It depends how you're working, you can key the shell up which will aid the adhesion of the paint and therefore you should be able to mask over it to protect it without fear of it peeling off.
Or you can cut the mask and lay the whole thing down and then remove the darkest colour first and spray and work in dark to light sequence up to white. You should be okay then but it depends on the design ? Liquid Mask is easier for big area's and bolder type designs. Cut film is good for logo's and details. It's not quick though. |

Hi Ian, saw the truck in the flesh yesterday. Looks superb. Fine detail with pin point accuracy. I looks like a machine painted it.
Top job.
