Default Need some info about materials (thesis)

Hi,

I'm studying electromechanics.
I'm in the final year of secondary school and we have to make a thesis.
We have to write 10pages about our subject till Monday, already have 6 but need some more information about the materials they use.

The car I'll make my thesis about is a Team Associated B4.1 and a Savage x 4.6

From what materials are RC cars made of.
What kind of plastic?

A company already sent me this:

plastic- type 6 nylon, 0-33% glass fill depending on location
aluminum- 7075 or 6061 T6
Titanium
Steel- C1144 and 303 Stainless
lexan polycarbonite (body and wing)

the a-arms and chassis are all different nylon versions.
shocks and motor plate are aluminum.

If there is anyone who could help me with this, I appreciate it allot!

The titanium is most likely to be Ti6-4 - Ti with 6% Aluminium and 4% vanadium. The oxygen content may vary, with less oxygen content being more expensive. Ti6-4 is the workhorse grade of Ti and constitutes over 70% of Ti made. Most other Ti grades have 6-4 as their base.

All the other materials you can look up on Wikipedia, but also try www.matweb.com which is an excellent source of detailed data on materials. It includes the plastics with their tensile strength, so you could look compare the amount of glass fill with the tensile strength of each plastic and deduce where they might have higher, or lower glass fills based on the mechanical loads each part of the car has to take.

Having said all that, it is your thesis, not mine! Hope you find what you are looking for!

BASF have good catalogues on their website for the plastics they produce and their typical applications. If you search for Ultramid which is BASF's trade name then you should find further info.

I believe Nylon (aka Polyamide) will be PA6 in the BASF catalogues. If there is glass fill then PA6 with 35% glass fill for example will be PA6-GF35.
