Just tighten the nut on the end of the shaft

Have you tried setting it as the manual says? (18mm from slipper plate to the top of the adjuster nut) and seeing if that works?

I found the best way to set mine was to undo the nut to near the end, then place the buggy rear wheels between my legs with the cars front pointing to the floor, then press the throttle and gradually tighten the slipper until the buggy goes to nearly half way then drops back down.
This is my way anyway, and i've not stripped any gears in about 7 hours of driving.
