Rear n/s tyre strangeness

The mrs has bought a 03 mk4 golf in white (finally lol)

The rear o/s tyre is worn on the inside and outside, but the middle is above legal depth. She plans to swap the wheels and tyres anyway, but if there is an underlying problem it would be good to know about it before it eats another tyre.

also after driving on it it is warm to touch. the other 3 tyres are cold. she doesn't hammer it everywhere and I thought it was most strange the 1 tyre is hot and the other isn't.

any ideas?

sounds like it's under inflated. When you get the tyre replaced its worth having a full geo setup as it may be out of alignment.

Running a tyre soft will cause both outer edges to wear.

The temperature in the tyre may well be the brake caliper is binding on or the handbrake is not fully releasing.

I also have 18's on my golf which wears the inside of the rear tyres first, but to wear both it confusing me.

I can't check the pressue yet as some donkey fitted alu caps done up so tight I can't undo them without tools

Caliper return.

Get under the car and look to see if the brake lever is returing to it's stop position with the hand brake off obviously.
I had this with my GT TDI 51 plate.

I think it is. the wheel spins freely off the ground.

just put new pads on yesterday. might be related for a few miles.

I think if the tyre is low on air that is related to the temp

I fitted some of those alloy dust caps to my car and could not get them off. Even the tyre depot could,nt budge them. Ended up paying for four new valves. They gave me the old ones back but even in the vice they tore before coming undone. Sticking to plastic now.

A binding brake would cause the wheel to get warm, not the tyre.
Only problem I know of that would cause both worn edges is (as mentioned already) low pressure.

yeah I checked the wheel and it wasn't hot at all. plus the disc would be red if it was binding.

can't check pressure as per alloy valve cap issue. held with with mole grips, but the valve was just getting crushed

Some alloy caps have a grub screw to stop them getting knicked, check there's not a small hole in the side

sounds like tyre has been run low pressure as others have said on here
please be aware though if it has been driven round for a long time low on pressure the inside sidewall of the tyre can become damaged might be worth to get a tyre house to take tyre off rim and check inside , can you see any punctures in tyre outside ??

Should of posted sooner. She bought 2 for the rear so all 4 were 225/40 and it turned out those 215/40's were run flat tyres that were indeed running flat lol.

New tyres on and car handles a millions times better - as expected really!
